Right well the coaches have clearly thought Dean can offer something at AFL level if they've picked him to play the last practice hitout before the season starts.

Logical they give him these senior opportunities when they can. He might not get a game R0 but it all adds to his experience.

The starting 18 as listed pretty much picked themselves apart from Frampton possibly.

The real interest for me tonight comes from the bench. Macrae, Reef, AJ, Harrison and Dean. Who puts their hand up early to say they want to challenge for best 22. We need these guys plus others to start putting some pressure on those 30+ guys.

My big wish for this game, other than no injuries, is for Ash Johnson to deliver a strong performance and conclusively claim the spot as Frampton’s forward replacement from our GF side.

With McStay out and Mihochek having endured an interrupted pre-season, we badly need one of our fringe tall forwards to become a genuine Best 23 player.

Johnson has all the physical tools and talent but needs to show that he has the hunger to compete all the way through games and not go missing for long periods, as has been his previous habit. Hope he takes the next step.

100 % . AJ is the one i am most confident has the tools to be a consistently dangerous AFL forward. Miho/AJ/Cox -Cameron plus Elliot provides a nice mix of aerial threat

This was my concern about the North game and will be what I'm looking at tonight.

It's only a practice game and I fully expect Richmond under a new coach and wanting to start the year off right to take it a touch more seriously than we will, but I'm looking to see those fringe/VFL players looking to break in actually show they want to break in.

That was my real disappointment to come from the North game. Not the loss, but the fact that that side was mostly comprised of the VFL team and they didn't seem to show they want to break into the AFL side.

I genuinely believe AJ has all the attributes and can be a genuine reason we can improve, all the physical attributes, sticky hands, can kick, X factor, I think it comes down to hard work and a belief.

It’s a little hope still for me rather than an expectation but I am looking forward to seeing what he can produce.

Given dean has missed so much footy in the last 2 years, he needs a decent chunk of vfl before he can put his hand up for senior time.
In other words, approach his performance against Richmond as an aberration or at best a teaser. Expect nothing - get nothing. Watch his opponent take him out of the game, or see a spot lightly pencilled in for him, that he'll sooner than hoped be grappling the big bears of the competition.

So no pressure, 'Just sharing some night air and banter with the boys! Perhaps a coupla quiet ones afterwards!'

Looking forward to tonight. Inrterested in

1 Dean I think it's possible he can grab the 2nd KPD spot early, assuming Murph remains out. Essentially there is not a lot of opposition, only Frampton really, and he is mature enough to step back into footy. If he clearlyoutperforms Frampton today I would mark him down for round zero. I expect VFL is the moost likely. Leppa did say he was pencilled into the FB possie for round 1 of 2022 before his injury so the coaches have belief.

2 Finn this is the biggest test of his preseqason so far. He has done really well up to date so hopefully he looks good at the level today and marks himself as a round 0 option.

3. AJ Would love to see him fire up. Very encouraged by his best ever pre season. He could make a real difference to us in 24. Good showing to day and he should get the round 0 spot

4 Reef good pre season and is progressing. I hope this is a break out year for him but I dont think he can do what AJ can. He is pretty much a lead up option only but if he does well today he could het that round 0 spot ahead of AJ

5 HH shoed up a bit in the matches so far. Big year this one so hopefully he does well

Interesting Allen hasnt even made the list of 30 even with a couple of outs also. Thought he looked pretty average against NM. Overall the NM kids did show how far they are ahead of ours but Allen was the one I hoped would show a bit of class. Hope he can come good and very early in season but a kid who was going to make a big mark should be up and about at the start of year 2.

Looks like tonight’s game is sold out
You can’t buy any tickets.Int had some people ask me about it

Yep I tried Sunday and none were available

i will consistently challenge the perception that AJ doesn't bring effort and commitment

yes, he can go missing. yes he can lack intensity. yes he can lack physicality.

but i think that is more due to fitness and learning how to assert himself in games when we are on the back foot and have to kick down the line and he would have to compete in a pack. i think its a technical issue and he will learn to add more strings to his bow, and had to build his body to do so as well.

for a guy that wasnt in the afl 2 years ago he is tracking very well

To me this game is all about AJ vs. Reef for that last forward spot.

Secondary to this is Frampton vs. Dean although I reckon that'll be Murphy's spot anyway, unless one of them tears it up.

A few players like Noble will be trying their guts out whereas I'd expect Steele and co to just coast along.

Given its a practice match and an extended bench I don't think we can take too much out of the result. I'm looking forward to seeing how Schultz looks alongside Elliott but even then they might coast along or only play half each.

I managed to miss spotting him altogether in both the practice games. I almost prefer not having seen him play, because until he proves otherwise, he is either a name on the list who offers hope or a house of cards about to collapse. There's a mystery about him that will be lost once he is seen in action or inaction.
Shro-dean-ers cat.

Would also love to see AJ cement his spot. His skills are elite, despite the fact that he never seems to do quite enough in a game , particularly the 1% ers. One of the most watchable players on our list though.

With regards to Allen, I watched the NM trial game 1 hour highlights last night of Fox Footy, and Allen did not get a touch. Keep reading on here, posters banging on about him and I keep wondering why. I admit I have only a small sample size of his games, but what elite traits doses he have? You have to have some elite trait to make it it Afl level. He might have athletic speed, but looks slow in a football game, particularly his reaction times to different situations.

Hopefully, he proves me wrong, and he still has youth on his side but at this stage he looks very vanilla to me.

Like most posters I’m looking at Dean and AJ. Dean looks to me the logical replacement for Murphy in a physical aspect and positioning. Frampton I can see playing if Moore gets injured. Billy is good cover but not best 22.

AJ has the chance to shut out others by making this spot his. He’s gotta be the most accurate forward in goal kicking just from what I’ve seen. He’s got good hands and awesome athleticism, unlike others I don’t see this as a matchup against Reef. Reef is not the key forward type despite being about the same height as AJ. AJ plays big and reef is the type of mid forward. He reminds me of when a great midfielder goes down forward to play. Perhaps that’s my issue with him I think he’s being played out of position, I always thought of him as a big mid. Anyway AJ to kick 4 tonight, Dean to play well and keep us guessing re Rd 0 and Finn to lock up a spot.

I am keen to see how Jamie Elliott and Lachie Schultz can work together or if Jamie's role changes at all.

Agree with you. The functioning of our forward line with all of Elliott, Schultz, Hill and McCreery buzzing around our taller structural forwards is going to be very interesting.

Then add in attacking raids from DeGoey, The Daicii, Crisp and Sidey…..we should be very potent.

It reminds me a lot of our 2010-11 era.

Surprised Sullivan didn't push his way into the 30.

Was Harrison more impressive than him against North?

I didn't see the "game".
Watched him in the VFL game to half time. Trying to do too much when in possession & has been pinged holding the ball a few times.
Can't knock his hardness at the football though.
