We'd get some sort of compo if Talia leaves as a FA. Probably an end of second round pick, similar to Higgins leaving North.
I still think there are only two likely options for Talia in 2022 - retirement, or playing for the AFC. I just can't see him leaving the club.

Not a bad look, my thoughts- Assuming Talia is fit enough to continue playing on I would want him to stay, the back line at this point worries me and having him there and leaving Fish to develop in the SANFL will benefit us long term. Everything I've seen on Dudley has him not falling to rookie draft so I don't see that happening. Are you getting rid of Newchurch in this? He was never going to immediately dominate at SANFL level and needs time to develop, IMO there would be no point in moving him on after a 1 year contract. Also after watching the weekend I'm not sure I am that keen on releasing Strachan unless we can get an AFL experienced body in. Having a skinny 18 year old as our backup for ROB isn't going to work.
Contracted Frampton is all the experienced body required as back up while the developing youngster is developing in the SANFL.

Newchurch?

And if he retires I can see us offering a coaching job for the back lines. Clearly already doing it with Butts. If we don’t then other clubs will want him in that role I have no doubt

I can see him at another club on a 3 year deal where the last year is effectively as a coach. Or staying at our club on 2 years.

Yeah, I forgot Newchurch - had originally cut him, but changed my mind.

Dudley is a tricky one. Very few draft rankings currently have him in the top 40+, but they're not that reliable yet. To me, I think he slides a lot due to his height, but maybe not.

I actually agree that Strachan probably now stays. I don't think we can cut him and Himmelburg this off season, and just bring a kid in. Bicks won't agree, but I think Strachan is a very solid mature backup. I'm not sure how we make enough space on the list without cutting him though ...

Over the last little while I have seen lots of commentary about our 1st round picks, so I thought I'd do some data on it... This is every first round draft pick each club has had since 2012 and how many games they have played. I haven't adjusted for trading, have allowed compensation picks for 1st round etc as I cbf to be honest.

Interesting crows related facts I discovered while doing this:
  • We rank 16th for average games played, only above Geelong & Hawks
  • The only club to have delisted a 1st round pick from the last 5 years is us (Gooch)
  • The Tippett penalties killed us, the avg games played by 12/13 1st round picks is in the 80s
  • Hamish killed the 2014 draft, Pick 4, 7, 12, 15, 16 all delisted after 31 games or less. I know it was Lever but still the pick stacks up he is probably top 3 of that draft if done now
  • 2016 draft was a disaster for us - Marshall, Berry, SPP, English, Hayward all picked after Gooch.
If you want me to run any other charts or stats on the 2012-2020 1st round picks let me know.

Great analysis mate.

Would it be fair to say that Geelong/Hawks have traded out of the first round consistently, which is why they're below us?

Doesn't sound great.

I'll just keep doing the exact same thing and hope for a different outcome. I'm guessing there's no medical advice that suggests a longer term path would yield a different result. So if they're at a total loss and reckon everything that can be done has been done then it's looking pretty bleak.

Pretty much.

Could be a career ender

i’d be putting mcrouch on the take up Free agency list.. I’d like to keep him but he’s just too similar to the rest of our midfield.. we need to move one or two of them on.. i’m picking him because him being out of contract makes it easier.

oh... and i have serious concerns about wayne milera... will his body ever stand up to whats required of it to play AFL?.. will he fully recover from his current injury? and if he does get back on the field will he ever be the player he couldve been?

his main weapon was his agility and evasiveness.. will he be able to regain this after tearing a patela tendon?

Stephens won't come. It's just his management using us. The Swans took him with pick four so clearly rate him, he has been in and out of the team but they still rate him enough to pick him in a good side. He has also looked okay at AFL level for a player in his second year.

He is not coming and if he was, it will need more than a second rounder. Different situation to Hately and GWS

He hasn't re-signed and isn't getting a regular game. He has every right to look elsewhere. And no one is giving more than a second round pick for a player not getting a regular game.

I am inclined to agree. he is not a world beater but then he is not the worst defender out there. If we have a few youngsters go past him in that time so be it, he is still good depth. You have to have some experienced depth players in the squad

We don't re-sign 100 game players as "depth". It will be to play as a best 22 player.

He's a free agent, so I expect a "Crow for life" contract of 4 years
