I'm going to be honest, I went to the stats to find something that shows Kelly is no good and we shouldn't be offering him a new contract. Then I discovered he is rated elite this year for the following:

Disposal efficiency - 86%! wow
Contested one on ones - avg 3.3
Contested marks - 0.8 per game

Also rated above average in the following:
One percenters (no shock) 3.7
Intercept possessions 5.7
Contested possession rate 33.3 (makes the efficiency even more amazing)
Kick efficiency - 79.8%
Intercept marks - 1.4
Spoils - 3.2
Tackles 2.4

initially yes, but as per my post, if a few of the youngsters go past him then he will be depth. And like Mutineer said, 2 years feels about right

Has a young player ever managed to get past an experienced senior player we have just re-signed?

When was the last time a 100+ game incumbent spent a significant amount of time in the SANFL?

I can only think of times where a player either retires or gets delisted

VB & Thompson both spent most of their last year in the SANFL.

True, but also when was the last time the club went full on rebuild mode and when was the last time the club got pick 1 (well just about) in the draft..a lot of first have been happening lately

That's a fair point.

I guess my main concern is that if people are expecting us to re-sign Kelly and for him to magically become a depth player at some point... we've seen that story many times.

Whatever contract we give him, we need to expect he will be best 22 for the length of that contract.

Considering the profile of our squad, is it a wise decision to re-sign a player like Kelly on a multiple year contract? What is our plan for guys like McAsey, Murray and Worrell? What about Mitch Hinge? What if we are able to sign Dawson from Sydney?

Personally I would give Jake a maximum one-year deal just to see through that transition to the aforementioned players. If he gets a longer offer elsewhere as a free agent, well good for him

Its always that juggling act of playing the kids and keeping experience around to mentor them.

I looked at that comment from Jake again and could it actually be taken another way and that is he is in no rush re a contract as he is firmly contemplating heading back to Melbourne at the end of this season?

Possibly, apparently he has thought about it a few times.

I think he would be a great depth player for the squad on yearly contracts, but we don't seem to understand how to use an experienced depth player

Hypothetical Trade for you…. Would you trade your first pick in 2021 & 2022 & Fischer McAsley. For the first pick in 2021 national draft? Jason Horne

Is that something you would consider?
I have to admit, i've considering that exact scenario before. And the sticking point would be Fish.

I think a lot of people are worried about getting fleeced and paying overs in any draft trade, but in a scenario where Jason Horne is on the table, I think its closer to fair value then many realize. I see no scenario where 2 x 1sts will get it done on their own. So it really boils down to how much above that value do you want Horne....

I may cop it from pillar to post for this opinion, but I think I would.

no chance..2 likely top 5 picks and a player who was taken inside the top 6 and is a slow burn KPD..Deals like that are for generational players and even then. Horne has not even kicked a ball in anger at AFL level so we are all spitballing just how good he will actually be

Me? no.

Very possibly/probably 2 top 4 picks and a pick 6 KPD (arguments can be made re the value of that) for pick 1?

From what I hear, there are about 4-5 excellent mids in this group, and I'd be happy enough to get one of the others if that is the cost.

I am inclined to agree. he is not a world beater but then he is not the worst defender out there. If we have a few youngsters go past him in that time so be it, he is still good depth. You have to have some experienced depth players in the squad

The issue is that young players never go past senior players. They retire as best 22 players, no matter how average they are. We should be playing Worrell ahead of Kelly, but he'll never get the chance.

Very considered answer mate. If Adelaide supporters want him in your colours next year, your going to have to pony up with something substantial.

Your like to comment ratio is pretty low. You need to think before you comment.

Yep, unfairly maligned by the usual suspects on this board, Jake's a very solid footballer these days and a strong character to have showing the young blokes the ropes.

Weirdly we've had a rolled gold best 22 that you support the selection of each and every week and yet we've finished 11th, 12th, 18th and 15th* the last 4 years. And yet there's not a single player that gets regular games that you think we need to move past. You're not actually the real Bicks are you, it's an eerily similar philosophy to that of the club.

For what its worth I'm of the opinion that the era of the Godfather offer is on our doorstep. One team will make this deal, or something very similar for the 1st pick in the next few years. And after its done once, it will become the precedent for teams looking for their next star player.

I don't like the idea of getting fleeced, but I also don't like the idea of going another 22 years without a flag. And sometimes a teams just gotta put all it's chips on the table.

And if that's us, I for one am going to be happy, not angry

Defenders often have very high disposal efficiency because a lot of their kicks are sideways to switch play or long to contests. Kelly the poster child for that. Kyle Hartigan runs at 84.4%. It's been like this for years.
