Adelaide Oval

Loved it.

Going to Adelaide Oval to watch Football is nothing new to me. Was there a few weeks ago on a Friday night to watch Sturt V Port.

Makes a difference with another 28,000 there.

I can see myself making a weekend of a Swans match in Adelaide once the move happens - visit family, go to the Oval, head out into the city afterwards. The new set-up will be something special.

What a beautiful ground it is... looked amazing yesterday. As much as I always wanted football there rather than at West Lakes, I hope it doesn't lose too much of its charm with the redevelopment. My understanding is that they're gonna leave 25% of the ground at the northern end open, so that'll maintain the views of the fig trees, scoreboard and church spires..
I imagine the prospect of watching an away game at one of the most attractive sporting arenas in the world will draw over a lot of Victorian fans, and the central location will attract a lot of neutrals as happens at the 'G.. good times ahead for SA football and the state in general.

Yeah they've heritage listed the northern hill, the fig trees and the old scoreboard and guaranteed the Adelaide Oval name. The stands will be knocked down (except the recently rebuilt one), but the loss of stands never hurt the SCG or MCG. Will still look fantastic.

Any chance they will widen the field a bit when they do the rebuild?

Pre new Western Stand the Adelaide Oval was already wider than Skilled Stadium at 125m. It possibly looked narrower because of its length which was around 190m fence to fence.

The Straight wings will be lost in the redevelopment. The New Western Stand has already widened the field by transforming a little under half the boundary into a true Oval, by 2014 the rest will be completed. The ground will be slightly shortened but by how much I don't know. When finish the dimensions won't be too different from Subiaco Oval.

It was great to see AFL at Adelaide Oval on the TV.

I think the charm about the ground is 'it's not perfect', that is, Docklands is the same all the way around and feels 'fake'.

AO has history and atmosphere, something money cannot buy.

Possibly the closest thing we now have to it in Victoria is Port Melbourne's TEAC Oval.

The beauty of the Redevelopment design is it takes into account the grounds character and Australian sporting vernacular in creating a balanced but disjointed Stadium. The new Oval will feature 4 zones of 3 varyingly different stands and a grass/terrance northern end which promises to be the driver of crowd enthusiasm plus preserves the Fig trees and the sightlines to the Cathedral.

This is somewhat Australia's answer to the new MLB parks in America which for the past 20 years have designed ballparks with a broken up mass rather than the boring concentric circles of the CookieCutters from the 60's and 70's.
Pretty sure most Australians prefer the aesthetics of the SCG over the Gabba.

Here's some more pics.

I wasn't confident the vote would be successful. Imagine if it wasn't and weekly AFL games at AO was still a pipedream.

I look forward to the 2012 fixture to see if AO gets a few games.

It was absolutely brilliant to be there.

Having a packed house made the atmosphere absolutely electric, but the stadium is just so good to watch sport at. It's absolutely beautiful. Polar opposite to the ugly, dirty, bland AAMI.

The only issues I had were with catering. My hot dog sucked and I couldn't get a FUIC at the kiosk :D, but that, along with the long toilet lines, will be fixed by 2014 no worries.

I can't wait for the rebuild, and I can't wait to watch footy there week in week out.

Also... they need to add in Wireless Telco access points to support peoples mobile phones. I couldnt visually spot any antennas around the stadium (either on the light towers like AAMI or attached to the stands)

Suffice to say I had ZERO coverage (on Optus) inside AO and many others complained about lack of coverage.

was really an amazing day and event to attend there yesterday - when the first plans came out I wanted the scoreboard and trees cut down and the whole thing developed, but bugger that the charm of the stadium was fantastic

in a perfect world we could leave it as is and play all games there and leave the crows at AAMI stadium

Had a great atmosphere about it, well done Port fans

Still didn't make a single cent profit out of the game though.
Capacity: 36,000
Crowd: 29,340 (82%)
Profit: $0.0

For some reason Adelaide Oval makes Adelaide seem so much less scummy. :p

Yeah yeah, come at the Collingwood supporter with scum jokes. :D

Seemed to work perfectly.

Just by gauging it from the tv coverage, the crowd was immense.

The siren is more a normal siren, than Westlakes' freight train siren.

The siren haha. It was barely audible in the outer.

Being on the hill was good but I have my doubts as to how good it will be in the rain and wind in winter. Seems much more of a fair weather area.

I also saw someone smoke a joint at the footy... it sure was a relaxed atmosphere.

Went along yesterday and bloody loved it! Best atmosphere I've ever witnessed at a Port game before, and that is saying something. It just felt right, can't wait for 2014.:thumbsu:

Get shit all reception at footy park too, it has been a problem for 2 or 3 years now. I'm with Telstra too. Had similar problems at the MCG as well when over there.

I certainly could smell weed around me on the hill,

The atmosphere on the hill was soo good, particulary in the last quarter. My ears were still ringing when i got home (which was only half an hour later via train:thumbsu:)
