AFL at Adelaide Oval - it will never happen (Part 5)

Maybe its the governments plan to introduce the Act to parliament and get the opposition to reject it, that way they can blame its cancellation on the Libs and the Adelaide City Council which wouldn't be a hard sell.

I don't mean to sound like a conceited prick (although it is my speciality) but it's fairly self-evident the government has never had a plan here.

to be honest, I can't see this going ahead

perhaps we need Egypt style protest to the complete an utter incompetence of governance in this state.

Lets face it, before they made the announcement about Footy at the AFL they should have had this shit sorted.

I'm fairly shocked tbh.

I expected the SACA members to be the one's to bone this and if that failed for the project to be tied up in planning objections until the Libs are back in power.

Never expected the ACC to get there first.

I just hope there is a ****ing plan b.

I wonder if it is worth calling Triggy and asking if he would actually tell one of us that.

The fact remains that AAMI in it's present state isn't going to cut the mustard* so WTF are they going to do about it?

*I don't really have an issue with AAMI except for the lack of decent public transport that doesn't end 15 minutes after the final siren and it probably needs a bit of a face lift.

They just said the government can change legalization to do it. Not sure what that would entail.

Basically means that it would go through both the House of Assembly and the Legislative Council.

The ALP has a decent majority in the House of Assembly and should see no problems there. However, the current leadership is fighting a fairly big battle with it's backbench/base. It may not be willing to spend the political capital on this.

In the Legislative Council the ALP is a minority. To pass this they would need the support of either the Liberals (little chance), the Greens (dreaming), Family First (unknown, but I'd bet against it) or the Xenophon Independents (unknown, but I'd bet against it).

Aretha Franklin could sing a song about this and it would go F.U.C.K.E.D*

*Mods sorry for avoiding swear filter, did it for the lolz, infract me as necessary.

Even if they could fix every practical problem with AAMI (and I realise for some location may prove insurmountable) the PR disaster that is AAMI right now is terrifying.

This project has a good chance of being emblematic of Rann's time in office.

Very good at talking a good game. Pity about the delivery being non-existent meanwhile undermining the existing, acceptable institutions.

I gather the prospect of a PR spin from SANFL re-invigourating AAMI is out of question.

I just don't know where we go from here, It is a shame we don't have statesmen anymore, one that could take this state by the short and curleys and move it in a direction.....any direction would be good.

I did hear a while ago Triggy saying they had plan b - that would be the upgrade on an existing inner city stadium to AFL standards BF'd if I know which one would work.

In the 47 members of the HoA there's no one fit to lick Playford or Dunstan's boots.

They're cowards who are beholden to their factional masters (a problem rife in both parties, probably a tad worse in the ALP).

Anything good in this state happens as a result of private industry, who generally have to make a large donation to each party just to get in the door to allow them to make some good. I'm not trying to say these corparations are out to do good, but they're doing something, unlike the SA government.

This whole AO project has been amateur hour from day 1 and it's a ****ing disgrace.

:thumbsu: + a mullion

the stroll across the grass, hand in hand, footy in hand all looks a bit ridiculous when every sits back and thinks 'pfffft ..... dream on fellas'

if it does fall over, everyone in camera shot will look like a clown.

Rowey and the stud had a meeting with the SMA today. The plans for the oval were very impressive but still awhile away from releasing details. Whicker was adamant it was going to happen.

Appropriate that Demetriou is the only one of those 3 without any blood on him ;) Speaking of whom, he's been conspicuously quiet on this matter since it all started going to poo.

Way forward? Two possibilities I reckon:

1. Do what they were going to do, extend the tramline and chuck $150M at Footy Park

2. SANFL engage private investors, sell the farm and build their own place.

Or the third, which is for the ALP to get the arse before they start work on the Marj, and the Libs implement their plan. Almost the best option?

Skeptical jo is skeptical.

New theory. adelaidecrows is Stephen Rowe, Graham Cornes or Leigh Whicker. They all share a commitment to enthusiasm without and regard for details.

He got his bonus, what does he care anymore?

I think that's the best option in reality. But everyone's spent 18 months trashing footy park, it's brand is unsalvagable at this point.

2. SANFL engage private investors, sell the farm and build their own place.

Probably the best option, in this state at this rate we'd be laughing if we see it before 2020.

Work's started;)

the new RAH will happen I have no doubt about that - they have already started work on the research centre - so it would be rather strange to have a great big stadium next to that rather than the hospital.

Exactly. The new RAH is budgeted for and all but has development approval. That's going to happen and heavy Kevvy will get his statue.

I wouldn't mind it at SANTOS stadium but the athletes their don't deserve to be booted without another home to go.

I did hear rumours pre-election that the libs were looking at turning the Pines into a multi sport zone including an upgraded Soccer stadium and the likes - not sure how true that was.

If AO doesn't go through it will be a good 20 years before this debate ever happens again.

Just listening to AA, Cornesy believes to have a source that is very close to this project and he said that the SMA will have a meeting tomorrow with the government. Apparently they will announce they have agreed to terms. From that point the SACA can take this to the members for the vote.

A few points he made.
The money figures look good (no cut backs)
The AFL have hinted that they might chip in for any shortfall
The SANFL are happy with the outcome
The SACA not as happy but will take it on the chin

Now I await the skeptics/whingers to shoot it down as they know better ;):D

An agreement with whom?

The ACC announced yesterday they have not agreed at all, so either the SMA has given up on getting control of the precinct, or Cornesy is talking out of his ass.

Also, if the SACA isn't happy with it but is taking it on the chin, do you honestly think they'll be able to sell it to the members for the vote? They were having serious trouble when things were peachy.

Considering it's Cornesy, I know which way I'm leaning, especially given the track record he and Rowe have in this - most recent being their "big news" at 4pm yesterday which, rather than the big positive they were implying, was the Council saying "No".
