Sinclair will not get dropped, i think most people know that. He is our best defensive forward and probably our best defensive pressure player in the side. His kicking in front of goal when rushed is a worry no doubt, but he is actually quite a good set shot and field kick, not elite, but makes good decisions usually. Unfortunately our seasoned class to come back into the side in didak and krak provide very little forward pressure, krak has looked extremely slow for the past year or so. Fasolo will bring a bit more in, but sinkers and elliot are the barometer for our forward press and are unquestionably vital to the way we want to play the game. Everyone needs to think about roles in the team and not star performances so much. He still kicked two goals and if he was a bit more poised in front, probably could have finished with 3 or 4. I'm sure he will be doing everything to work on his deficiencies.

Team v Hawthorn
B: Russell - Brown - Maxwell
HB: Shaw - Reid - Toovey
C: Sidebottom - Swan - O'Brien
HF: Dwyer - Lynch - D. Thomas
F: Elliott - Cloke - Goldsack
FL: Hudson - Pendlebury - Blair
INT: Clarke - Macaffer - Johnson
SUB: Sinclair

You obviously weren't a lurker (welcome to the board BTW)! Ed has that attitude coming into every Hawthorn game and was 3 from 3 last year. The closest we were able to get to them was 6 goals last year and though we've noticeably improved I'm not so convinced its enough especially with a few top liners still out....
Thanks for the welcome. It will be very difficult, but if we simply follow geelongs formula of being 25 points down at the last change then we will hopefully win!

Out: Jolly, Seedsman, Johnson
In: Hudson, Thomas, Frost

Frost for Johnson is only if they go with Gunston and have potentially four damaging talls. They will be looking to exploit Maxwell as the third tall again othewise. If no Gunston, we might stick with Johno. Macaffer may be able to do a job on Gunston or that type of medium forward they like to play such as Lewis.

We need to give Russell a crack at Rioli. I would tell him if he does a good job he has a permanent spot in the 22.

We need to shut down Mitchell. This guy is the key to their side. He will get 20 possies no matter what, but its the extra 10-15 he gets on the outside where he sets up so much of their play that needs to be cut out. Perhaps Blair can stick with Mitchell and make sure he gets no easy possies in space.

Birchall is the other guy that needs stopping of half back. They have lost some drive off half back with no Suckling or Young even, Hodge is perhaps going to step up here though. Birchall is their prime rebounder and a very good player. Sinclair could do a number like last year or don't mind Goldsack for that role either.

Sounding a tad neagtive here, but I think those three are the key to the Hawks. With our midfield still under strength it wouldn't hurt to have a more defensive mind set to make sure we don't get blown away early.

I would like to squeeze Kennedy in there as the sub somehow, but can't find an opening.

We should be able to restore our forward structure this week which will help our scoring. Hopefully they rush back an under done Lake, even though he has a good record on Cloke, I think Clokey will blow him up with his endless running. Schoemaker is much improved & may take Lynch.

I am not entirely confident of getting near the Hawks. The main reason being Rioli & Franklin having "on" days and hurting us on the scoreboard. I am hoping we can stay with them for 3 quarters and hopefully our runners can ensure another fast finish - Clarke, O'Brien & Sidebottom's endurance have become a real weapon in grinding down the opposition. The Hawks are coming off a trip to Perth, hot day & on a big ground so they will feel the pinch late in the game.

Perfectly articulated. He looks energetic and tenacious, and leads tackle counts each week. He should retain his spot for now.

I would be hesitant of assigning Russell the task of defending Rioli. I think Russell got pantsed at times by Garlett and Yarran on Sunday, and looked a little slow and complacent. However I think he should be a permanent fixture, but I don't think he should be asked to look after one of the premier small forwards in the game at the moment.

For any Hawthorn people lurking?

What's the word on Sewell? Would be a good out for us - he usually kills us.

Just saw this

Darren Jolly has been cleared of broken ribs after Sunday's game, he was taken to hospital during the game after being subbed off. Scans revealed Jolly had suffered cartilage damage in the rib area and he was able to leave hospital on Sunday night.
Does that mean he could play?

According to Clarko, he had some tightness in the hamstring so he came off as a precaution. Will be monitored through the week, but will likely play.

Considering he couldn't even jostle in a ruck contest last week i highly doubt it

I think we should probably apply caution this early on. If we brought him back too soon we could potentially risk losing him for a few extra weeks. We definitely have alternatives.

We did push them very hard in that round 1 game and may well have won if it weren't for our inaccuracy (2.8 in the first quarter), and still only went down by 22 points in the end. But in saying that we were murdered in round 17 by Mitchell (as always) even though Swan got 49 disposals and Beams 30-odd and four goals. We were hammered in the middle in the QF during the period when we simply weren't playing well at all. For mine this game is bigger than yesterday's; if we can win this it will set our season up in a big way. Really big chance to see where we are at.

mate, read through the thread - we can't even decide if Sinclair's playing...

Sinclair will play, 14 disposals, 2 goals and 5 tackles is not a performance that gets you dropped, especially with no match fit players to replace him with, at least in the role.

Daisy is a like for like replacement of Seedsman who had 4 effective disposals, that seems like a no brainer.

Macaffer has been average, I would play him as the sub.

You can't conceive how much more football knowledge I have if you think I'm at a bar for games.
My post was in response to everyone saying Ben Johnson had a bad game and should be omitted, someone saying "80% of his kicks went up in the air and straight to a Carlton player"
BJ had 16ish touches at 75% efficiency, while Dane Swan had 27ish touches at 53% efficiency.
I could go on, further proving my point, but the point of my post was to try and have the common football supporter look at performances from a different angle and under a different light.

Do the tvs in Perth have extra panoramic vision? You seem to see very clearly from over there.

This week is play Reid on buddy - toovey on Gunston - brown on hale/ roughead - shaw on puopolo/Lewis - maxwell on breust and I'd play D Thomas on cyril.

I'd be inclined to play Frost too given Bailey allows Rough and Hale to play forward. None of our big three are agile enough for Buddy... but I'd give Frost first crack. Brown to Rough and Reid to Hale. Russell to Lewis, Toovey to Rioli, Maxwell to Puopolo. Play Shaw on a wing.

And last year he started to come good only after round 4, played well until he got injured and wasn't as good when he came back. Give him the game time.

He has that attitude going into nearly every game against a half decent opponent...

Our 3 opening games of the season have been against 3 sides that beat us last year, so happy to be on 2 wins ATM, another tough match coming up here.

If we win this weekend 6-0 isn't out of the question.
I'd say A big possibility, we should breeze past St Kilda, Richmond may be a little tougher but we have a good record against them, and likewise Essendon. I had a couple of question marks over the first two rounds and I'm very happy that we've managed to win both with such a large chunk of our best side not playing.
