OUR GWS WIN IN 5 MOMENTS:

STEVENS ON OUR WIN AND THIS WEEK'S GAME

PREVIEW:
The final round of the season sees us face Adelaide who are still clinging to second place despite having dropped their past 2 matches (4.6 30 vs 5.3 33 against Bris and 5.2 32 vs 5.4 34 against Melb). Who would have thought 1 month ago that entering the final round that this match would be a live with both sides still a chance to snare a grand final berth. That will change however should Melbourne defeat Fremantle on Saturday arvo at Casey Fields, which would see our extremely slim chances ended.

Our girls continued to build on their form last week against GWS and we've now played 4 pretty good weeks of footy. For mine last week was the best attacking footy we've played all year, we really moved and carried the ball well. For the first quarter our quick ball movement seen an open forward line and GWS hardly venture into their forward 50 such was our dominance. GWS responded by putting numbers back in the second quarter and as has been our problem this season we struggled with being out numbered in the forward line. However for we were effectively able to regain our structures in the second half and reassert our dominance. Last week was the best that we've been able to counter this defensive ploy and it highlights the development of our team work and structures that we were able to do so with great success.

On the day all our forwards showed great form with Hope playing her best game for the year despite being hampered by a bandaged knee. On another day she would have not kicked like Cloke (2.4) and could easily have ended with a bag of 4 or 5 goals, which would have been a nice reward for effort as she's worked hard up the ground in recent weeks and again last week against GWS.

In fairness Hope wasn't alone in missing chances at goal and we easily could have defeated GWS by 50 points, which would have been more reflective of our dominance.

Further up the ground Bonnici also played her best game for year and was arguably BOG in a performance that seen her rewarded with a rising star nomination.

For Adelaide Marinoff, Phillips and Randall are clearly the key ball winners, with Phillips and Perkins forming a formidable partnership up forward and Metcalfe sure to give King a contest in the ruck.

As the outside of outside chances we're going to need to combine the defensive effort of the bulldogs game with our best attacking game and also take every opportunity at goal if we're to be any chance of booking a ticket to Brisbane to face the Lions at Gabba in the grand final. It's all but impossible, however we're technically still a chance albeit we're going to need to play out of our skin and have other results go our way.

The race for second:
  • Adelaide win and they finish 2nd; should Adelaide and Melbourne both lose Carlton and us both require significant boosts to the percent to jump them
  • Melbourne win and hope Adelaide lose. There's a slim chance they could get in with an Adelaide win, however that would required Melbourne thumping Freo and Adelaide winning by the barest of margins
  • Carlton win against Brisbane and hope Adelaide and Melbourne lose. Would need to a big win and a big Adelaide loss
  • Collingwood we need Melbourne to lose and for us to defeat Adelaide. A victory by us of 49 points is required to overtake Adelaide's percentage. This however would place us just 1-2 percent above Carlton, so ideally a Carlton lose would be nice too otherwise we're reliant upon a Carlton victory by around 1 goal give or take depending on the scorelines of both matches.

I'd love for us to finish the season with 4 consecutive wins. And its worth noting that the teams we've beaten are 6th 7th and 8th on the ladder, I'd love to knock off a genuine contender which would cap off the inaugural season beautifully.

We're definitely capable.

Yep, it would be nice to finish with 4 wins in a row, even though it's almost certainly too late. At least the usual knockers who were out in force a few weeks back have been silenced, I do remember reading plenty of nonsense about how incompetent the coach was and how poor the recruiting had been! Perhaps we got a few things wrong, but once we got going we have shown plenty. It's just a pity the season is (most likely) about to end for us.

I suspect the AFL are disappointed they only opted for a "final two" this year, no doubt the finals series will be expanded next season.

tough game for the ladies, Adelaide a dam good team. even with a win, which l very much hope
a grand final is just out of reach this year. unless the unbelievable happens. they came good to late.

Collingwood - Cula-Reid who played last week has been omitted and misses the extended squad. She's likely to be replaced in the 22 by McIntosh who's overcome her injury. Walker and Schleicher also come into the extended squad of 24 with 2 still to be omitted.

Siekman was full of praise for McIntosh:
Siekman said:
She’s the best small defender in our team and probably the best small defender in the comp based on who she’s played on and how many goals she’s conceded

Adelaide - also have an omission from last week's game with rebounding defender Thorn omitted. Midfielder Mules has been named on the ground with fellow midfielder Hollick named on the extended bench after missing last week for her wedding. While they haven't looked outside their initial squad Adelaide have taken a leaf of out of Fremantle's book by naming an uncapped ruckman in O'Shea as the final member of their extended bench.

Shame our early form cost us
My gauge on the early part of the season is that sides were winning games just on the basis of one or two stand out performers, often the big athletic types, which we lack. However as the season has progressed team footy has came to the fore, the girls have got more match fit and they also know their teammates better (strengths, weaknesses, positioning, leading patterns, kicking abilities/distance, etc). With that has came better ball use, structures and skills across the field and the smaller players who rely on smart footy are impacting games more.

In short it's like the old saying a champion team will beat a team of champions; early on I don't think this was the case with AFLW as it takes time to get that team footy happening.

Yes there's Hope as there's always Eva.....

Win well, be nice competition to a
Our inaugural season.

Agree a finals style comp could have been set up, with 2 v 3 play off to face leaders in GF

Great preview.

Tough for any team scoring really big and % moving what is required, but you just never know

Cheers, Eva has had a great few weeks and will be pushing D'Arcy who was best on ground across the first 2-3 games for our best and fairest. I agree we're pretty much no chance of making the grand final as 49 points is just too big to achieve against Adelaide. It's a pity we didn't kick straighter against GWS where we easily could have finished with 10.10 instead of 7.13. Both of Adelaide's losses were by less than 1 goal, but 34 points would be much more realistic in comparison to 49. Winning on Sunday would give us a big scalp and place us on the positive side of the win/loss ledger, which short of a grand final berth would be a nice outcome in the inaugural season.

And great work barrackers on your contribution to these ladies threads

Great info

Melbourne looking likely to end our impossible task before it begins and they're also well on track to destroy the record score of 7.13 55 that we set last week. Melbourne have kicked 8 goals straight to lead by 33 points at half time.

EDIT: 3 quarter time Melbourne now have 10 straight to lead by 44 points, we aren't making the grand final

Grand final chances officially over. Melbourne finished on 11.4 70 to record a 54 point win. Still not enough for the dees to overtake Adelaide's percentage, so they need us to win by around a goal or 2 depending on the scoreline. Personally I'd rather see us thump Adelaide, so we're a chance to finish above Carlton.

Tonight's game between GWS and WB determines the spoon unless it's a draw in which case Freo takes the honour.

So tommorow is a Dead Rubber.

When we lost against Melbourne that was end of our Realistic GF Chance
