I guess they didn’t run up a 3/4 trillion debt so ‘doing nothing’ is under rated
Nobody cares about debt levels other than as an excuse to attack the other team

Raw debt means nothing

All people see is a surplus because the government isn't spending and that means no support

Plus it needs to be actually viable to get through.

If they propose a heap of radical legislation that will never pass, it's all a bit moot.
As if Labor is even interested in proposing anything radical

Labors issue with passing legislation is a refusal to negotiate with greens and teals

I don't disagree with that either. Neither major party is particularly interested in upsetting the status quo.

Like with the housing issue; you have all the people in power being home owners and expect them to do anything meaningful to reduce the growth - or even reverse it - of house prices or rents?

It's happening in the same pattern too.

Progressive typed are losing the working class/regional vote while retaining the inner cities
I'm not sure progressives ever had the regional vote here

Labor isn't progressive no matter what they claim which would matter less if they helped the working class instead of chasing coalition voters

They're ignoring their base to try and win voters who will never vote for them and appease critics who will never support them

The thing is there are plenty of things they could do that aren't actually radical but would be treated as such by the opposition or media

But they could pass a lot of things if they were willing to negotiate with the teals or greens in the Senate

Of course most of those things they could do go against both their own ideology and the interests of their donors so it's not going to happen

And their in lies the real problem

Labor don't actually want to make things better in a meaningful way because they are largely happy to maintain the status quo

"Massive migration".

Population growth is slightly above the 20-year average, and it's making up for two years of ~zero just before that. Migration over the past 4 years is lower than that of the previous 4 years. And our population is growing 1.5% per annum, much slower than the 50's and 60's.

Australia is a vast country and previously we had services underutilised.
It was easy to maintain that expansion.

But now there are a number of factors which should sway the government to change the current direction.
Current Infrastructure is struggling to deal with current demands, we havent kept pace with investment in infrastructure to maintain current average of migration
Housing - number of new housing completions is going down not up, we have more builders but less productive, there is more red tape from the govt, than in the 1950's when could buy cheap land and put up a cheap Fibro house.
Rental crisis - basically 0% rental availability in some places.
This makes it hard to move as not guaranteed a new place,
Harder to change jobs to new work location, live near family, etc

It would make more sense to tie immigration to housing completion.
why do we need to bring in international students families?

More people coming in = more heat in economy = less likely any interest rate reductions coming in Aus.

why are there 4 times migrants on student visas than skilled working visas?

Universities are the main benefactors.

You should try looking at the shit the LNP say more, they love identity politics. Divide and Conquer is the strategy the GOP relied heavily upon, and Dutton is very much pushing a similar line here.

Most of what gets called 'woke' is basically summed up as 'don't be a campaigner' which is weirdly controversial atm. People seem to pine for the days when punching down at minorities was all good, whilst conversative media / politicians / talking heads keep telling them how WOKE the world is, at odds with the experience most people actually have in their day-to-day lives.
Whatever you want to call it, the lefts values/priorities the last however many years keeps getting rejected. Stop worrying about tokenistic shit and start working properly or this trend will continue

It was not that long ago the 'left' won in a landslide in the US and here. I wouldn't think putting it all down to 'woke' and 'tokenistic shit' is the best analysis as it's pretty superficial and just buying in to the culture wars rubbish you keep railing against.

There's massive global issues following on from Covid. The entire world is still bouncing back from those and the low-to-middle income earners are disproportionately feeling the strain. They're voting against the incumbents because that's all they can do really. In the US it's a two-party system where any vote for an Independent is almost certainly a waste. Here, we at least have the option of taking a flyer and voting for some independents or minor parties to see how that goes, before rolling down to the major parties.

If you're not happy with things right now, that's fine, but take the time to learn a bit about what's goings on, and what the different parties represent. The solution is almost certainly not voting for the LNP, but to find an independent party that represents meaningful policy change, and vote for them and use the preferential voting system.

We saw a strong swing to the Teal Independents in a number of states because traditional conservative voters were seeing the LNP didn't represent what they cared about. The Teals are certainly more 'left' than the LNP are, they're also left of the US Democrats.

define not that bad because I think they've been terrible

and I don't mean on paper in what you think the coalition is and what you think labor is

i mean in reality

in voting and legislation and action while in government

labor are also offering nothing

people will vote them out and hope the coalition do something because Labor have shown for their entire term that they won't do anything

people dont give a shit about how much of a campaigner Dutton is

they give a shit about the fact Albo has done nothing to help them

it doesn't even matter whether they think Dutton will, they will vote Albo out for not doing anything

its happened all over the western world in the past 12 months

the incumbents are getting voted out because people are angry and their lives are worse than they were

if you still think the on paper appearance of a party leader matters you have not been paying attention to literally anything
I know you love a bit of both-sidesism, 'they're all as bad as each other', but this government has not been as terrible as the one the came before. It might be disappointing that they haven't done more but it's certainly better than an alternative government that would have done worse. Here's the list of what the government says it has achieved, I know you can run it down line by line and say it coulda woulda shoulda been more, but I'll still take incremental change over the shit the previous government was handing down.

Cheaper childcare and pay rise for child care workers
Tripling the bulk billing incentive
Reduction in price for PBS subsidised meds and extension of dispensing meds to 60 days
Paid domestic carers leave
Largest increase in cancer nurses
180,000 fee free TAFE places
58 new urgent care clinics
Improved worker conditions (same job, same pay and right to disconnect)
Restoring trade to China and ending tariffs on products
Two surpluses.
Tweaked the stage three tax cuts

I didn't include the Robodebt Royal Commission and anti-corruption commission because you could absolutely argue they have done nothing, or the NDIS changes because while managing costs is essential, it's effectively been a cut for many people.

You can also argue that they have brought inflation down without slashing government services, something the Liberals almost certainly would have done. Now, they could have done more, but that would have also blown out debts, turned the surplus into a deficit, and probably also cost them the election as 'bad money managers'. I'm happy to pressure the government to do more and their initial pledges for the upcoming election suggest they know they have to use this foundation to address the fact that many people are worse off before because of cost of living, but it's not they have done nothing, it's just you don't think it's enough. I still think it's better than the only practical alternative and would tell others so.

Seems like a good excuse to get off social media. I'll be fairly happy to say bye bye to my FB
You may, but what about others that don't want to give up FB/YT/Insta etc...?

And here's the tender listing, so enjoy verifying your age before watching that pr0n guys!

i think a couple of the coterie of public servants indicated it was some sort of trial. it’ll never get up. for one, “thug” will see the political upside of opposing it lock stock and barrel

I'm not actually in favour of it, dont how many people will be, but if it happens there may be some silver lining of giving people like me that final push off such platforms.

But yes it would suck for a lot of people. I'm kind of surprised its Labor pushing it so hard, kinda would have thought it would be more up LNPs alley.

As soon as adults realise they'll be opening themselves up to verification before watching their 'adult' content, the support will evaporate.
