Autopsy Autopsy vs Collingwood aka the Great Pain Robbery

Trying to calm the heart/rage:

LDU and Wardlaw were once again incredible. Hats off!

Phillips was incredible. Anyone hm who says otherwise just does not get footy. Unless he was injured, subbing him off was the game right there. Stupidity from Clarkson.

When the pressure (applied or perceived) is there, you can tell the players we need to move on or replace: Tucker (was ok admittedly), Fisher, McDonald (just couldn’t handle the pressure today), Stephenson. As soon as we replace these guys, the quicker we can return to regularly winning.

Chom was again colossal and is continuing his cheeky run at AA CHB.

Sheeze played an interesting game. Had purple patches and other times where he wasn’t sighted. This comes with splitting time as mid/HF.

Larks played an enormous first half but would have liked it if he played higher for longer.

Zurhaar was fantastic.

Teakle was brilliant considering expectations. A few contested grabs, mobile and some excellent tap work. All you can ask for.

Curtis was important but faded in patches.

Taylor probably played his best game for the club. Kept running and pressuring. He can be relied upon to halve a marking contest or deliver the right option.

Arch got beaten a few times but you can just see that the hatred of losing is meaning that he will learn from this.

Dawson was ok.

Can’t remember anyone else.

The umps manufactured the fairy tale finish. Daicos is a great player, but anyone would think he was Mr Glass out there with how little contact he needs to receive favourable decisions.

Collingwood are soft. I’d be embarrassed to support a team that plays for frees like they do. Anyway. Can live with that. We have a football team again ladies and gents.
How many did they deliberately run into players for a free? .. club should put them in the spotlight. What a joke

As soon as the senior players were getting the lion share of the possessions, we were cooked.

Corr, McDonald, Tucker, Fisher.

Just all pants shitters.
All those players had really solid games - we all know it. The reason they were getting the lion’s share of possession was because others had completely blown up. Fisher’s choke was crucial, though. Nobody beats Collingwood at the death. What hope did we have? Magnificent effort. We just have to get that winning mentality going. The Pies have it in droves.

We didn’t lose that because of missed umpiring calls. There are always missed calls both ways.
We lost because our midfield is currently unable to maintain the rage for a whole game, and because we dropped the Daicos tag.
It was a good display. We knew when we were 50+ points up that there was going to be a comeback.
The boys will learn from it, and be better for it.
We have a similar opportunity against a depleted Melbourne next week.
We lost for multiple big reasons.

One of them was the lopsided umpiring.

Commiserations on the loss. North played some exciting footy early. Just have to play four quarters of that and you’ll be hard to beat. All the best for next week. Keep your chins up.

Something that really saddens me is you could see how much LDU and Zurhaar wanted it. But will they want to stick around after games like that? Where they give everything an its ripped away at the final minute because we aren't one of the big teams and thus aren't supposed to get late free kicks. Why wouldn't they go to a team that does get that kind of umpiring love?

LDU, Wardlaw, Sheezel, Zurhaar and Scott all massive. Teakle was exactly as advertised and a definite 1st team player for me. Really helped with the forward structure and Xerri chop out in the ruck. Shame Larks couldnt keep up the goal kicking but PC played a ripper and looked great.

Realistically our 3 lines all had a semblance of structure today which was pleasing. Now its a case of swapping a few magnets to improve. I know i'd rather McKercher have that footy right at the end than Fisher or Tucker.

Once the usual suspects are no longer in the team the bottom 5 players dont look so bad we'll start moving up the table.

Umpires no doubt pulled out their pistols and said "stand and deliver", but we should have never been in a position where a few howlers cost us the game.

Good but nowhere near good enough, and since the first half effort shows you cant just blame personnel, serious questions have to be asked about why scoring dried up like a corpse and why did no one predict that run on was going to happen, and happen in the fashion it did? players and coaching panel all looked like deer in the headlights.

And bring me the head of the man that made the Will Phil call.
Be fair. I would say good but not quite good enough

VFL team had a great win, with some excellent performances from our listed players. We lost by one point to the reigning premiers with Wardlaw, Sheez and LDU dominating and our forward line looking functional. We played better than last week, take the emotion out of the close loss and its one of our best weekends of footy in years.

1. Half the list has a bad mentality after the last few years of suckage, Riewoldt pointed out heads dropping while still several goals in front. Conversely Collingwood's record of close wins and comebacks is actually insane.
2. Senior players aren't reliable enough.
3. We played high intensity football for most of the game and didn't have quite enough gas in the tank to get near Collingwood's intensity in the last.
4. Great accuracy at goal makes us look a bit better than we really are, so when scoring shots dry up they REALLY dry up.

Proud of the boys.
Put up a great fight.
Another pre season and we will close those games out.
Umpires meh bit shit but what are you gonna do.
Wardlaw is breaking out in front of our eyes.
3 tall forwards helps Larkey.
X is better with Sheezal in the mids and a more settled midfield to set up plays with.
Phillips looked good as did Taylor.
Lot to like.
Onto the dees next week.
Phillips to Oliver
X to crucify gawn.

As an aside.
Knew from half time we were losing it.

Brother made it a point to have a convo with me (* supporter) about how Chom was vindicated in saying the pies were gettable.

From that moment I knew we weren't winning. campaigner is the biggest jinx in Australia.

We can’t really be complaining about umps or 50’s if we’re 30 points up going into the last quarter.

Biggest margin 54?

By and large happy with what I saw today. Last weeks win has clearly energised the group.

Kinda laughable though watching Collingwood supporters response to their win and the players forming a huddle after the siren like they achieved something huge today. You lot got manhandled for the majority of the game by the worst performing team for the last 5 years.

#lucky#luckywin
🤣Way to belittle our team after such a magnificent effort.

A lot to like today.

  • Wardlaw needs to improve his tank, he is such a dominant player in the middle and only playing 70-75% of the game is hurting us.
  • The subbing of Phillips was such a huge mistake, he was doing a great job on Nick Daicos who was the difference for Collingwood in the fourth.
  • The connection between our mids and forwards was the best we have seen in 5/6 years, the addition of Teakle worked very well today. Even Pink looked better today with a third tall in the forward 50.
  • Comben is getting better with every game down back and is our CHB for the next decade. He is very mobile for his size.
  • The skills shown by midfielders LDU, Wardlaw, Sheezel, Powell and Phillips were exceptional in that first half, they fell away in the second, but the future looks really exciting.

I think Chom, Sheeze, X and Wardlaw will be seething. The rise will come from one-other than this quartet.

I pity Melbourne’s midfield next week.

McKercher for Fisher
Hardeman, Goater or Bergman for McDonald
Duursma for Stephenson
Anyone for Tucker

Not to mention Simpkin comes back in. We've got the cattle, just a matter of getting group experience into them

The first half was lead by all of the younger guys. Some of the best footy this club has played for years.

Second half had far too much involvement from senior players who can’t execute effectively.
