Would love one of the AFL shows to pull apart exactly how Hogan was able to get as free as he was.

Was there a lot of blocking?

Was he doing a lot of dummy leads and doubling back and forth?

Was Cox as bad as we all think?

I'd love to see some down the ground vision because that was a bloody dominant game from a KPF.
I know Cox had a bad game but Hogan is the form forward on the competition and has done what he did yesterday to pretty much every key defender in the competition this year.
This isn't targeted at you, but I'm old enough to remember the eras of the Full Fowrards kicking bags of 10 each week. People have forgotten how damaging a key forward can be. In the early 90s we'd have multiple players kicking 100 goals per year. It's not so much the fault of the defender, but the midfield allowing the ball to come in deep and quickly. Even the best backman has no chance against fast ball movement and a quality forward opponent.

How many goals would Pearce have stopped?

I would have thought Pearce would have stopped 1 or 2, plus having Cox free helps us as well.

That's my point. I want one of the media shows to actually break it down. It would be fascinating but instead we will just get the usual "GWS just wanted it more" or "Freo need to go harder at the ball".

This game would be the perfect one to breakdown the forward craft to better understand why something worked.

I for one am very concerned as soon as the ball hits the ground in our back fifty. Personally, i don't think we react quickly enough and tend to just be ball watching. Not to mention the poor tackling

Side issue but how was Youngy tackled , arms pinned and his head hit the deck right it front of umpire 16 and no free? Umpire had clean line of site. Am I completely incorrect ( has been know to happen)?
I reckon the bloke will be cited. One week suspension.

I agree whole heartedly on not taking the picks to the draft but you lot are very optimistic on trade costs. When was the last time we traded for a player and immediately after the trade you thought "man we paid unders"

You will be uncomfortable with what we give up.

Haha yeah if we trade for Bolten it’s nothing short of our first and 3rd first rounders .
We ll be getting nothing back let alone p30 , which I’m ok with and tbh I d actually rather do that and in the process get Richmond to pay some of his salary.
Which I think especially with how much we’re after the chad is the route we’ll take.

And Right now that’s alot more beneficial than getting some 2nd or 3rd round pick and feeling like we didn’t “lose” the trade

People will need to get their heads around we’re basically going to be wiped out of the next 2 drafts but if your bringing in 2 elite talents like Bolten and Warner and most importantly still in their prime years you do that everytime.

Our list is in perhaps what could only be described as the absolute sweetest of spots a club could hope for - still young core but challenging for 4/8 already , (no major deficiencies other than small fwd)

3 first round picks and high second in what’s a very deep draft

3 NGA predicted to be highish selections already in the sheds ready to be added to the list at a discount over the next few years.

I can’t for the life of me understand how anyone could possibly think going to the draft over trading in 2 young superstars in areas of need over the next 2 years is anything but bordering on lunacy

Maybe 1? . But if we're playing alternative universe games the Jesse doesn't miss those set shots he had and kicks more than he did. We've had discussions on this board before about how would Tony Lockett go in this era. Big forwards kicking bags of goals used to be the highlight of our game, and fullbacks were never stopping them, just hopefully limiting their impact.
There's little a back man can really do against fast ball movement into the forward line, against a forward who is smart and athletic. Look what is happening right now in the Dogs v North game.
I think Cox is being a bit harshly criticised here.

We've already cocked this up IMO. If the club is backing the coach in sign him up for 3 years and get in ready to go players like Bolton / Baker / Warner.

If the club thinks he isn't our man, punt him and go to the draft. A new coach will likely take 12 months to get bedded in anyway.

A decision needs to be made either way. After 5 years there is enough evidence for those in charge to make a decision.

Not the two easy ones missed by Johnson
Of course we can go through the tape and find numerous errors through the game.

I would've thought pinpointing literally our last shot on goal as crucial might not be that controversial though. Any rate, a miss in the closing minutes that would've put us in front when we're working so hard to press, could totally be expected to sap momentum.

As I said, circumstances were the main culprit. No point in holding O'Driscoll to blame at all.

Although we could also nominate that Banfield brain explosion to hand Hogan a goal on a platter...

Yeah. It is just a recency thing, I guess. I thought Amiss' miss was a pretty big momentum killer as well. Bread and jam for a key forward and wasn't a difficult kick.

You'd think Amiss would be doing a fair bit of around the corner at training, especially as seeing his conventional shots have been junk. The one where he hit the post from close in, every left footer on the planet kicks that goal.

I don't know if recency is it so much, just that a last shot on goal to put you in front takes on a bit more significance. Just like a totally unnecessary 50m to put the opposition out of reach has extra significance.

For those wondering how Hogan got free so easily there was vision last night of Hogan leading back towards his own goal, Cox followed him about 2 metres behind. Hogan then turned around and made a lead towards his team-mate with the ball. Cox jogged slowly after Hogan and arrived in time to stand on the mark. Never once did Cox have body on body with Hogan. If you are playing on a gun forward you need some body contact.

Watching Cox yesterday he was slow, he is unable to contest a ground ball and has no idea how to actually play on a player.

If he is as injured, as some are suggesting, then he shouldn't be playing. The coaching staff should be able to explain his role to him better than they obviously did.

He goes well enough when the game is on his terms ie he is playing a loose checking role and is able to roll off and intercept at will. With Pearce out we need him to tighten up a lot.

Ryan chose to defend the goal line region rather than cover a loose man in the forward pocket when a player was having a set shot. Be interesting to hear which option the coaches would have wanted him to take.

Didn’t watch the game as I promised to help my mother-in-law move house (not as fun as it sounds). But **** me, we really bottled this season didn’t we. Just not good enough when the heat was on. Would have been good to at least played a finals game to get some experience into the group but seems a long shot.

So flat.

I come in peace from Orange Sydney.

For the record, based on 2024 performances Freo are DEFINITELY one of the best 8 in the comp.

It would be a real an injustice if your team don’t play finals.

Just be ready for the very-gettable Port next Sunday, because we will be putting down an unloved dog immediately prior to your game.

Happy hunting.

Unfortunately we have ****ed the last 3 weeks and ultimately ****ed the season. We need Carlton to lose next week to even have a sniff.

Edit... Pls beat the dogs lol.

**** me there's some doom and gloom here.

Yes this has been a frustrating season, but we're a West Coast win vs a smashed up Carlton away from needing to beat Port on our own deck. Play like we did today and I reckon that happens.

GWS are a phenomenal team. They realised that if they bombed it in they were a good chance to mark or have the smalls feast. And feast they did. Hogan may have got the goals, but it was Brent Daniels that torched us, ably helped by Jones and Greene. We barely lost an old fashioned shootout where we missed three absolute sodas, Amiss hit the opposite post with a ricochet on the line, and two stupid 50s.

Quit your crying and bemoaning how shit we are. We aren't. We've made huge strides this year (the fact we could make finals on percentage speaks volumes), and look to be bringing in some serious talent over the off-season.

Cox is coming from a long way back, but has never been the 1-v-1 guy anyway, that's Pearce.

Amiss was off on some set shots, but **** me he's a sublime talent. He'll work it out.

Young is tiring, unsurprisingly, as is Sharp.

Chappy was great today, NOD showed he may not be a write-off (could'vewon us the game), and Sturt played the best game I've seen in purple, defensively and offensively was scrapping all day.

Our structure won't change now. Reidy wasn't amazing, but he was enough for it to be a benefit coming in.

Matty Johnson was hard at it all day, such a strong kid, got to be blind not to see what he's shaping to be. Should've kicked two today, but that'll come.

I couldn't give a ** about this season. We may still make finals, **, if everyone's back, we could win it. But it'll be what it'll be. We're going to be in the mix from next year for a while, enjoy it.

Yeah, with seasons like this I reckon it is what we do next that counts.

Do we go for a quick fix and sell the farm for Bolton and co ?

Do we hold our hand with an eye on Warner?

Can we have everything?

Do we build depth via a unique draft hand and some really useful targets?..

Do we revisit the game plan over the preseason?

Good morning Docker Fans,
Very rare for me to post but I saw something yesterday that infuriated me and it was not during the game. It was before the bounce, Hogan ran down to the goal square and took his position.
Hogan the leading goal kicker in the AFL.
Dockers fighting to stay in finals contention.
Cox mans him up and what does Cox do ......?
He gives Hogan a cuddle!!!
If Hogan kicks straight in Q1 he has 5.
Cox should be given a rocket.
The coach should tear strips off him.
Unacceptable attitude, and I hate to admit about my team but..... soft.
We need to harden up as a club.
The team is a reflection of the coach. We need a leader of men, not an anxious boy scout.
