wth?

the shiel signing had a big cost and would've been net positive, but was always going to be a less than 50% prospect

he's done well with Setterfield - perfect fit with our profile.

Oh come on, setterfield might be a great get in future, but he won’t improve us much next year, he can’t, he’s less experienced than Dow.

I’m sorry if I think that very good mature midfielders are more important right now than injured young kids that we can get for cheap, but the latter seems to be SOS’s only winning strategy.

How about me

I posted yesterday morning that the Bombers were back in the hunt. I don’t think too many believed me. The key factor - I think - was GWS was pushing Shiel and Connors in their direction. That’s who they wanted to deal with once Shiel indicated he didn’t want to go to StKilda - they had the best “now” pick on the table. Hawthorn’s was too low and ours was 2019. I reckon from that point, Connors worked to convince Shiel that he could get him to Essendon with less fuss than either Carlton or Hawthorn. Essendon, for their part, had to up their $ offer which they did.

I reckon we could have become GWS “club of choice” - and perhaps, by extension, obtained Shiel, if we had put pick one on the table. I’m glad we didn’t and, in any case, he may have been reluctant to come to us given our ladder position

As for the quietness this morning, nobody knew anything. Shiel notified Carlton of his decision about 5 minutes before it was made public
Pffft we all know you guys are just cheap peddlers of rumour drugs....

Got any more of them rumours?

Fair. I'm still hearing H.Goddard & K.Collins and we have spoken with Tyson & Dunstan. Goddard as a DFA and one of the mids cheap would be handy. Then add BSOS and a mature mid as rookies

With Shiel gone we will still have a few good picks

PS Is Nic Newman worth throwing some cash at? Scuttle the North deal. 25 year old big bodied mid?
I can't understand why we would be interested in recruiting 2 delisted KPD that have shown nothing in 3-4 years from teams that are screaming out for KPD. That is a massive hint for me that they are busts.

And yet we beat them this year. Funny that.
We also beat them once the year before that (psst, should have won the 2nd game as well).
I think we are going to be a powerhouse going forward, I wanted Shiel but I wasn't all in like many on here (mainly because of the price). There is no denying though that the year we just had didn't paint a very impressive picture. It was always going to a difficult task in selling us to a player who went through a tough build in his younger years.

Rightio, who else is on the radar???
Alex Fasolo.

It doesn't but it should.

So supporting club as a kid should be a factor or the notion of supporting a club as a factor should be buried.
Apologies, I'm not sure which angle you are taking..

Our long term strategy stays in tact yes - but - playing devils advocate here - if we only land McGovern, Setterfield, draftees and maybe Fasolo() does it REALLY address our need for 23-27 year olds that adequately. Probably not, in which case I fear for Bolton if we endure another <5 win season.

Hoping like hell this isn’t the case.

Lost to Collingwood, Richmond and Hawthorn, whilst beating WC over there, (after their loss to us) and beating Port away as their best achievements in the games you mention. They only just got over North, and beat GC, St Kilda and Sydney at home.

Contrasted with their first half of the year? Way better. Outperforming nearly all the entire competition? No flipping way. Essendon's year is just another manifestation of the trend towards style over substance in AFL reporting.

Nailed it.

* are not what they think they are.
* think they are a top 4 team.
* are dreamin' even with Shiel.
* will finish somewhere between 6 - 10 as they usually do

I look forward to beating them again next year, it is always such fun.

P.S. * are convicted drug cheats

They beat Geelong, Sydney, Giants, West Coast lost to Hawthorn, Collingwood and Tigers in that run so winning more games than they lost against top 8 sides. That's a hell of a lot better than Collingwood and Melbourne and probably better than most finals sides.
Add in an AA mid and FF and they are as well placed as anyone

No not at all. Happy we are not paying the reported amount though.

Liked listening to Setterfield's TAC coach (Ryan O'Connor?) this morning who said all his injuries, including his knee, were impact injuries and not soft tissue.
So he should come back from his knee injury very well.

Yep, heard that interview. Was good to hear not soft tissue so if we patient the long pay off could be awesome.

8 - 10 wins.
In 2017 we won 6 games and lost a heap others whilst leading in the 4th quarter.
We revert to 2017 form but with a far better fitness base.
