The plan was to go to the draft for three years which we've done - as it turns out, this strategy results in us having Pick #1, which really should be the perfect platform to use to now attract senior quality players. Lo and behold, the allure of another high pick sees us deviate from the plan and hold firm to go to the draft, yet again.

Irrespective of how good Walsh may be down the track, how anyone can preference him over an established mid like Shiel shows how defeatist we've become. Posters have praised us all year for not deviating from the plan, yet are now celebrating that missing Shiel guarantees us pick #1.

What will change next year when we have a top 3 pick with another strong crop on offer. No one was talking about Walsh 12 months ago, and guarantee there will be another Walsh next year. There always is.

We're never going to be contenders without being aggressive and moving away from chasing the best new kid in the land. We're going to enter next year with 4 number 1 picks/9 top 5 picks/12 top 10 picks/18 first round picks. We would have got something back for pick 1 if we offered it for Shiel - who knows, still possibly the best kid 5 years from now...

McGovern and Setterfield will no doubt be great additions, neither improves our need for mids in the 23-27 year age bracket that the club stated was the plan. If they are all we get, see you back here in 12 months in exact the same position, and no more attractive for the next 'Shiel' on offer...

Oh Dylan, you poor, poor, dumb little boy.

It’s going to be so much sweeter when we beat those bastards now.

If his father was a diehard blue he must feel sick. I’d personally need a cooling off period from my own son.

I hate * so much, irrationally so. I didn’t think it had another level to go up but it just did.

Bonus is they already thought they should’ve been in finals this year, some suggesting they at least should’ve been in a prelim.

Well they’ll expect a flag now and they won’t win shit, now there’s something to get happy about.

I think this needs help thing is a bit overstated. We have solid bodies like Curnow and Kennedy to throw in there at the contest. The problem is more Cripps just wills himself into so many contests it looks like he's doing it all himself when reality is he's so competitive it's hard to keep him away from said contests .

I completely agree. Good luck trying to hold him back. If he is feeling frustration I would bet it is more team based than personal - he just wants to win.

Until the trade is done do not give up hope.

Remember what happened with Nick Stevens who for all his faults subsequently was a good player (mostly) for us.

And remember it’s Dodoro at the Bombers...

A good negotiator knows when to walk - it’s like real estate - you must know when you reach the overpay mark and avoid doing so.

Definitely hoping we get someone else in to support Cripps. That's th biggest downside of not getting Shiel IMO. The fanfare and publicity it would have brought would have been worth a lot too, but ultimately we just gotta get another big body, A-Grade midfielder in so Cripps doesn't cop the heavy tag every week, and when he rests forward we aren't left with a midfield of 19 year old players and Ed Curnow.

Ah well.

My mail has been that we have approached Shiel ever since he got drafted, each time that he signed with GWS. His family dog is named Juddy.

Each time we approached him Shiel told us that he wanted to play his days out with Carlton, but just wanted to stay at GWS and try get a flag first.

Happy to share my mail to a mod in this regard. But see

Hence, we have no plan B. We thought he was ours. What seems to have happened is that Shiel has kept four clubs in the air and played them off in order to ensure GWS is best compensated. Nothing wrong with that, you got to respect the way in which Shiel has tried to look after GWS. Essendon must have put up the best trade offer, and we fell short.

Setterfield >>>>>>>>>>> Shiel.

Mark it down. We have got the better player and cheaper :thumbsu: and we can now get Kelly in 2019

Plus we have made the Bumbers pay 2 first round draft picks and a lot of money.

Lots of positives
Two first round picks, whilst good player ...

Not worth it imo

Dont think SOS is going to sit on his hands here because he didn’t pick us. Feel he will have a crack at trying to orchestrate something else behind the scenes.

McGovern, Setters, Fasolo and hold onto 1 is still a good period for us. I can’t see for the life of me those three being it though. Especially if Casboult and maybe Jones are off.

he's a whole two years older than Cripps

I agree DS is not old. But think about it 2 years is a good % of an afl players effective playing years. look at it this way, they come in as 18 YO and spend the first 2 years finding their feet, so for most players their career starts at 20, then injuries start piling up taking their toll on their body so that by the late 20's they are finished. Lets be generous and say the average career is 10 years (which its not and is substantially less than that) so we can say 2 years is 20% -nearly a quarter of their career. Liken that back to the average age 80/84 in australia. 25% is 20 years!

Now that we have next year's first safely back in the top pocket, does anyone think Jack Martin is gettable? I think Suns poured cold water on this but there must have been some smoke to start the talk of a move in the first place.

So, not surprising given the delay...

B70 and EP the only true ITKs as per usual, the rest need a bit of a hard look at themselves / or their sources. Not fair to have gotten the hopes up of certain posters in here.

Personally, I’m happy to get Walsh. Giving up pick 1 would have been disasterous.
