Rebuild is more about steps than just trying to keep all your good players. First step is building a spine closely followed by key onballers. Basically your core group. Then come your half backs/forwards and so forth with ruckman generally being the last step/priority.

This is due to the importance and influence players in this position have on a game and the availability of quality individuals who play these roles/positions.

So for example godo key position players and onballers generally influence the game more than players in other roles followed by your half backs/forwards etc. Good onballers and tall players are generally on par in terms of influence but the availability of quality talls is a lot lower.

So basically players who are good key position players are hardest to bring in through trades and generally take a high draft pick, same as your really good onballers. Pretty much why you have to take advantage of having early picks and the opportunity to take these types of footballers when it arises.

Quality half backs/forwards, second string mids and rucks can generally be found in the second and third round and rookie draft as history shows or can be much easily acquired via trades.

Basically the way I see it, Kreuzer stays and the chances we've taken step one aren't overly likely but if he goes then we've gone a long way in taking the first big step in our rebuild which would be a phenomenal effort. The follow on effects would be pretty big as well as while it probably doesn't lift us off the bottom in the short term, it allows us to focus more on midfielders and other positions in following seasons.

One of the problems with our last rebuild is we only half follows these rules. This is pretty much how Silvagni built GWS. Can Imagine he'll do the same with us.
WHile this sounds good in theory......

Take GWS for example.

With Mumford
Without Mumford.

If you think the ruckman is the least important position on the ground, then okay.

Not least important, easiest to fill. Certainly not as important as good key position players top level onballers. GWS have gone into games going without a hell of a lot less than Mumford quite a lot this season.

Whilst I appreciate your example, it doesnt have the same context to GWS as it does to Carlton because the rest of their spine is largely intact. They could do with an additional young KPD, but most of their other talls are locks.

Forget their forward line for a moment and replace it with ours. Which of the following do you think they would prefer:
- Carltons forward line with Mumford in the ruck; or
- Carltons forward line with Jeremy Cameron swapped in for almost any Calrton forward, but someone like Lobb, or Phillips in the ruck?

This is the decision Carlton may face. A 26 year old ruckman in Krooz, or the best key forward in the draft. Ruckmen are important, but key forwards are importanter.

I'd like to see us try Smith as that small forward.
Don't see Smith (or Bucks ftm) as goal sneaks, best would be defensive forward. Worth a try but would definitely be drafting one of Kerb/Gresham/Lovell

We won't know for sure until after he goes to the new club in FA period, which begins Friday October 9

Step 1 - He accepts large offer from another club
Step 2 - Hands in paperwork to the AFL for Free Agency
Step 3 - We are told within 24 hours what compo pick we'll likely receive
Step 4 - We have 2-3 days to match offer from other club or let him leave if we deem the compo pick suitable

Smith is in his first season give him a chance, he's got exceptional ball handling skills which is a thing that has been neglected at Carlton. Pace is good, I think he's a chance to become a player. He just doesn't appear to be a forward. He looks more like a defender who could have potential to play on the ball as well. See how he goes next season with a big preseason under his belt and a new coach.

My feeling is:

If we are guaranteed pick 2 for Kreuzer, he goes, if we don't, he stays.

We would be negligent in letting pick 2 go for Kreuzer.
That's the way I see it also, just cant see the AFL guaranteeing it before we have to make the call.

So we would be hoping to make an informed decision but in reality we wont be able to, we will just have to trust the precedent set with Frawley and others if Kreuzer accepts an offer to move.

Funny to see how everyone cries about club loyalty until a moment like this, when they'd set fire to their nonnas for a shot at a high draft pick.

If we trade Kreuzer and resign Warnock, I'm done.

Not dissimilar to Lions telling Adcock and Leuenberger to look elsewhere or the Cats moving on Chapman, Stevie J, Stokes, Kelly etc.

For the betterment of the club.

Oh good. We aren't trading Kreuzer and we will end up re-signing Warnock. Glad you'll still be on board D2W! ;)

IIRC WA did try him up forward in the champs last year. Might be worth at leaat giving him a go there in the preseason.

I can understand that, but then we get zero opportunity to whinge about players leaving for the betterment of themselves.

There was a fair bit of angst about Henderson on here IIRC.

I think he just needs to shift his mindset from focusing on his man, to focusing on the ball.

Prefers to hit than get hit (to be fair, who wouldn't), and when there's a loose ball on the ground and an opposition player in the vicinity, he seems to prefer letting them pick it up before trying to tackle them.

If I had to guess, it's being exacerbated by the talk of him being such a ferocious tackler and hard nut. He's just trying to deliver on the reputation that's been circulated.

I'd be sitting him down to watch some Paul Puopolo highlight reels as a guide for how to balance his game.

Won the game for WA against VC in their only win for the champs with a BOG second half in the forward line. Kicked the match winning goal too. Have to persist with this guy and get the best out of him.
