Yep and his aerial skills. A player his size (and renumeration) would ideally be taking double figure marks per game, all around the ground.
If he finds he's not in a position to cleanly mark, it would be beneficial to know when and how to spoil effectively.
There's quite a few areas apart from centre bounces, where he could have a massive impact.
Not even Max Gawn does that.

No, perhaps not :), but geez, he has presence. I'm always aware of him when watching Melbourne play, whereas I sometimes wonder where Grundy is, after not noticing him for a periods of time in games.

It is strange really when prior to "the contract" , he was front and central most of the time with such lion hearted efforts.

Anyway, he may yet come back to having that sort of influence again and I hope he does. He had his best all round game for some time against the Weagles I thought.

I’m confident we will see Grundy return to his 2018/19 form.
He and Moore will deliver multiple premierships for our mighty club.

Gawn took 12 marks against the Power and in a best on ground performance led his team to a massive win against the Power away from home.

Grundy took 5 marks and had his usual stats. Winning the ruck dual against Naitinui supposedly and picking up Coaches votes. But we got beaten at home against one of the worst teams the WeeGirls have put out in years. They’re a patchwork quilt. Yet still took the chocolates against us. Without their best 5 midfielders to even shark Grundy’s immense efforts.

I know, he played brilliantly. He doesn’t do that every game though.

In all your valid criticisms you didn't point out Grundy centre bounce jumping efforts....
Has there ever been a ruckman with as bad a timing at this than Grundy ?
Hopeless.

And Adams is one of the highest centre clearance players in the game. Is that because of Grundy??

I think you need to look at the midfield and why they got 3 fewer centre square clearances. Having said that, we had more clearances over all.

Nic Nac is a clearance beast, yet he didn’t have more than Grundy.

I’ve been critical of Grundy, but he played a good game last week against one of the best and most impactful players in the games. Can’t blame him.

50% more inside 50s. You don’t lose those games with that number. It was either delivery or just a very inexperienced forward line who didn’t know how to find space against a very experienced and strong back line.

Pointing out a players deficiencies is not hate as was noted above. I would love him to be a ripper but he’s not.

Grundy had 19 disposals at 47.4% efficiency; a match low for Collingwood
Grundy also had 8 Clangers: a match high for both teams
Grundy had 4 clearances while Natanui had 7
While Grundy had more hitouts I think I recall they both had the same number of effective hitouts.

In the first quarter he took two contested marks and I was rapt for him. His first kick was banged high into the forward 50 so that McGovern could intercept continuing a pattern for Collingwood

For a smart guy he does some dumb things on the footy field.

I don’t hate him nor do I hate any Collingwood player but in my opinion he’s a good ordinary player who works bloody hard, lays lots of tackles, does lots of 1%’rs but undoes his efforts by saying something stupid like “I love you” ….sorry got carried away

He undoes his good work by his sub AFL standard efficiency.

I want him to do well, I want him to be a great ruckman but in my view he ain’t so far.

How do you explain his All Australian selections?

These occurred during his 2 best years - 2018/19. Two years have passed without further selection and he does not look on track this year to be all-Australian.
I realise that, but the previous poster made it sound like Grundy has never played at the highest level.

It’s still early in the season. There is hope he can get back to his AA output.

There is hope, but based on what? Two and a bit years of so so ordinary form and apparent loss of his best attribute, his ability to play as an extra midfielder?

I’ve previously said he’s not playing as well as he did in 2018 and 2019: since then he’s no where those lofty heights since in my view. Don’t get me wrong I hope he does.

When I think of a good Ruck I think of Jolly, Peter Moore and Len Thompson. He’s not in their league currently.

I'm one of BG's biggest critics... I thought he played well against WCE, one of the better games I've seen him play in the last year or so.

I think we should hope for the following to be coached out of him this year:

  • Giving away silly free kicks in ruck contests, especially around the ground when he is out of position/behind the opposition ruckmen
  • Guessing with his handball/hand-balling to no one
  • Skewed kicks off the side of his boot

As for his marking, this isn't something that can be coached into him now, he isn't a great mark because he didn't grow up with the game and thus misreads it/runs under it consistently.

I believe he can

He is in absolutely no danger of being dropped if his current form is his minimum contribution.

I actually thought he looked to start the game well vs wc first half especially. Had good effort and follow up.

Was hardly a bad game anyway you look at it, people just expect more from him.

I know he like to ruck solo but I wonder what impact that toll has taken and the wear on his body maybe needs more rotation fwd or pine to keep him fresher through not just the season but games.
Most teams double team him in the ruck.

This.

When Grundy was the dominant ruck in the game and was winning BnFs and a huge reason why we went deep into September it was his work at stoppage that was key.

He has never really been a dominant aerial presence...and doesnt need to be.

I disagree with your last line, it's part of his game that needs attention and given his attributes there is no reason he can't lift his aerial presence.

Agree - that poster talking about stats from one game and bagging an AA player accordingly, shows he has no perspective.

They think my game is just a growing pain , why don’t they understand, it’s such a crying shame. Their lips are lying, only real is real. We stop the game right now , we got to be what we feel

Grundy’s form has undoubtedly been below his best for two seasons now.
As a team, we need him to make a greater contribution this year and beyond. I believe he can do that.

Fair enough. If he can improve his output in marking around the ground & when he goes forward, he would be so much more dangerous.

He was certainly marking the ball more in his AA years. Never been much of a goal kicker unfortunately.

We take the pressure and we throw away. Conventionality belongs to yesterday. There is a chance he can make it so far. We start believing now , but we can be who we are
