Statements like "He barely breaks even over the past 2 and a bit years" is just totally untrue
But then the likes of Cornes states that he is not even in the top 5 ruckmen. If the criticism is warranted, Grundy has to cop it. The annual salary will provide substantial insulation from the heat being applied to him.

Cornes routinely has terrible opinions. He just says things for clicks, not for any sort of actual attempt at analysis.

The salary is the reason for the heat in the first place.

Any chance Grundy can actually learn some composure when kicking? He had 7 clearances for 0 score involvements on the weekend including direct turnovers. If he can't I reckon he needs to be instructed to handpass first. The forwards also need to get front position when he posesses the ball because his kicks routinely fall short.

I'm also always "amused" when people use the term "almost bankrupted the club"....yeah it happens to suburban/country clubs and to the Fitzroy's and Sth Melbourne's of the world (especially when the wigs at AFL house want cheap expansion clubs to move immediately interstate!) BUT Collingwood is never gonna go under whilst it has the supporter base (and very wealthy supporter base too) that it has always had.

I was told by a very senior club official that back in 2009 the Westpac bank notified CFC that they had 30 days to raise $1 million or Westpac would send in the receivers to put the club in administration. And that Westpac were doing is a favour because if it had been any other company they wouldn’t give them that chance. And if it had been almost every other club in that predicament they would have folded.

The club then ‘kicked the can down the road’ by selling the Club 5 memberships (Legends members paying for memberships 5 years in advance). And then they got the windfall from moving as many members as they could over to auto-renew (Collingwood were the innovators there) plus the windfall from the 2010 Premiership.

Although that does kinda support your point that the supporter base won’t let us go bust, that was a bit too close for comfort.

He seems to kick a lot out of the ruck. If he’s going to do that, then it needs to be within the framework of team play, so we need at least a player who is ready for it.

The statistics are damning for Grundy to say the least.

What’s more damning is that against the Brions he was mostly ineffective and yet we only lost by 7 points. Yet he had 0 tackles, 0 marks and 0 score involvements. This from your Premier Ruckman of the competition. If it wasn’t so obvious. I’d point out that performance mirrors someone who got pissed off that they were called out for not tapping the ball to his teammates and only tapping to himself. His performance of doing nothing more that just tapping the ball and putting to his boot most of the times was just like a kid spitting the dummy. Let’s see if you can do it without me.

You are kidding yourselves if you think I don’t want Grundy to be successful for us. But what some of you guys aren’t seeing is the forest from the trees. He doesn’t need to be the contested ball winning extra mid. For us to succeed. He doesn’t need to be constantly on his knees gathering ground ball for us to succeed. All of this we have players who can do this.

So when he isn’t burning himself out by doing all the things we don’t need. He can then use his indelible endurance qualities to do the things we do. Like cover the ground better. Have the energy to jump into packs and occasionally take an intercept mark. I’ve seen him jump and he can mark. It’s just he is mostly spent from the continual contests and barrage at ground level. He can’t get up for the important stuff.

I’d rather see him get 15 possessions a game with 6 marks, of which 2 are defensive and 30 HO with 10 of them to advantage and a goal a game. That’ll give us more from him with less strain on him. I don’t care about his money as long as what he gives us is helping us win.

Adams situation is similar. He wants to get 30+ possessions per game. What he doesn’t understand is that if your kicking efficiency is 40% those possessions are rendered useless. He is better giving the ball off to let’s just say anyone else on the team except Grundy and we get a win from that outcome.

Either both these players who have massive potential to change our fortunes change their mindsets or they are useless to our needs and are only serving themselves. Yesterday I watched Roary Sloane give up his own game to play a team role on Broad. Which inevitably curtailed Broads intercepting and run of halfback. Helping the Crows beat the Tuggers.

I think most of you are mistaken that I just want Grundy gone. Or even Adams for that matter. Not the case. I want them to give us what we need and not serve their own needs. At the moment Adams thinks he must be this player for him to get the Captaincy and Grungy thinks he must be that player to justify his contract. And neither are on the right path…..If they stay on them. They will achieve nothing other than justification as to why they need to be moved on.

The coaches want territory at all costs - so a kick fwd out of traffic would be preferred every time.
An errant handball does more damage because the turnover gives the opposition better field position from which to rebound.

So Grundy would be under instructions to just kick it fwd if he doesn’t have a safe alternative.

Rob is one of the nicest posters on this forum. For him to fire up shows how poor the Grundy bashing has been.
No one would disagree that Grundy’s current form is down on what he is capable of. The constant references to his contract are pointless as that is not going to change.

So over 2 years is current form. He has been below the standard he set since he had a hissy fit about being in a Covid hub and I gave him the benefit of having a down year that year but his form is exactly the same as that year.

I don’t know why the criticism isn’t warranted.

As our highest paid player, isn’t it reasonable to expect him to be in our best handful of players week in, week out? He barely breaks even over the past 2 and a bit years.

Think Bucks, Swanny, Pendles over the past 20 years. Look at the big money players of today: Petracca, Gawn, Martin, J.Reiwoldt, Dangerfield, Hawkins, to name a few. Consistent high level performance with few average/poor games.

Because we have to be Grundy yes boys on here and not say anything negative about Brodie in case we hurt his feelings.

Given Grundy hasn’t even made the AA squad of 40 since he signed his new contract, I think we can stop lumping him in with Gawn as the 2 best rucks in the game.

Bingo. Nailed it. Gawn is so far ahead of Grundy. He actually imposes himself on games.

No No No…..

Do you actually watch the games. If they are instructing Grundy to do what he is doing then they need their arses reamed.

Or more so when they review the tale of the tape next training session. They should be telling Grundy to stop and desist from the ridiculous dump kick that’s being turned over at infinitum. Hell I bet the opposition are ready and waiting at half back for this because they already know Grundy does this shit. Along with Adams.

Either way you look at it someone isn’t doing their jobs properly. And I’m betting it’s Grundy. As everyone would rather he didn’t just turn it over.

So just like Grundy please stop and desist from stupid comments like this.

Ridiculous.

A quick comparison with the gold standard ruckman (Gawn) is telling.

Gawn takes far more marks and actually kicks goals while averaging 3 more effective disposals.

Grundy makes more tackles and has 5 more hit outs but I'm guessing 'effective' hit outs would tell a different story.

Gawn does everything a ruckman should and then some, Grundy reads like a very tall ruck rover.

Grundy is on a big extended contract. A lot of people are upset as they believe he is under performing. Some people don't care and some are happy.
So, nothing is going to change any of that. You can agree, disagree, have a hissy fit, shit on other posters or whatever. We have Grundy on a big deal.
At his best, he is a star. At his worst he is horrible. Like anybody.
So let's get on telling each other why we we like it, or why we hate it or why we don't care.
Let's NOT get on assassinating each other at every opportunity.

If you don’t think the game is about gaining Territory I can’t help you.

Why do we lament CB getting caught constantly or T/O the ball with handballs?
It’s because in both cases he’s given up Territory, where any kick fwd would have done the opposite and therefore preferred.

Thanks Dinder...

Gawn is a lot older than Grundy isn't he? I think BG will improve on his current output -- he's just a bit down at the moment. He might even be carrying a niggle. I totally get the angst, and the criticism, and also those who want to support him. Let's just merge the two and go for a balanced outlook?

If you think that gaining territory is not the name of the game I can’t help.
Kicking fwd is always preferable to getting caught if you have no safer option eg. a handball or kick to a free team mate.

It’s pretty basic really.

I disagree… Nick Daicos at his worst is still a star!

You can’t see the forest from the trees…..

What’s the difference between losing it there or losing it 15-20 metres away from an ineffective dump kick.

Whichever way you want to SPIN it.
A turnover is a turnover is a turnover….

The contract is done.
There’s nothing we can do about it now.
What we can do though is get the best out of him…and I’m holding belief that he will return to some peak form and that the coaching group will get it out of him soon enough.
