Opinion Can Dustin Martin be the GOAT? (Answer: no)

Fyfe Danger Judd and Martin. All averages kicks of the football.

Its what sets Ablett apart
You clearly havent watched Martin live.
His ability to flight the ball as needed is amazing.
His goal kicking from a set shot is horrible for such a good player but his field kicking is the best ive seen from a Tigers player. Ever.

He is a much better kick than dangerfield and fyfe who seem to kick long to no one. I do note he does perform high risk high reward kicks for regularly then the 2 mentioned. But he is still the league topper for clangers per game this year.

A Greatest Hits album is an artist's testament to a long and prolific career. In music it's a lot easier to put something together that is a tribute to a long standing successful career. In Sport we have very short attention spans, we live in the now with every game on TV and we inevitably over rate modern day players to buggery!

Still rate him as the best high risk, high reward kick in the comp. His vision to find targets at a distance is second to none atm.*

In modern football, GAJ still has everyone covered, quite easily. Absolute freak, and to think in his early years he was called lazy among other things by his teammates.

*Obviously a bit bias, but I don't really see other players pulling off long distance kicks like he does

opinion's aren't 'truths'...brother.

how about instead of singling me out with your delusional rants, you go and respond to the posts below that are only just within the last few pages of this thread....some are even richmond supports

What a dummy spit lol

I re-watched some matches this week and yes, Dustin Martin is not only GOAT potential, but he can get better.

He’s actually a bit like Buddy in that he makes a lot of simple mistakes that should be rectified with experience and allow him to bust open games that little bit more.

Of course he should get better. This is his only real break out year - in terms of being in the top 3 bracket of players in the league. So he is improving, I would expect he will continue improving. I won't discount him in a greatest of all time thread (if he continues to improve), but I would consider it unlikely he will display the consistency of an Ablett jr - who spent nearly a decade in the top 3 bracket.

Dusty was the best player this year, that is all. He's still not the best player in the AFL (that belongs to Ablett and Buddy). Best of all time? He'd have to have several seasons better than this year to be in the conversation.
GAJ is the best in terms of his career. But hes not the best currently. He hasnt been the best player in the game for a while. He hasnt played enough because he's either been injured or not bothered.
He's not going to be MVP level again.

I think for Martin to ever be considered the GOAT, he would have to either maintain this level for another 6-7 years, or have simply done more in the first 6-7 years of his career.
Martin's 2017 was as good a season as you get. Fyfe's of a couple of years ago was close, before that I think you'd be going back to early Judd. Watch those highlights, can do it all. Another couple of years at that level and he will be right up with the top bracket. But that remains to be seen.
I don't think you have to do it for 15 years like Ablett. Players like Malcomb Blight (178 games) and Royce Hart (187 games) are two of the best players I've seen talent wise, and they were at their peak for only 5 years or so. Ablett is so remarkable because he has been so good for so long.

Dusty is not even in the top 5 best players for the past decade.

His 2017 was outstanding and i am a massive massive fan of his, but he needs to maintain this sort of form for the next 3-5 years to be even considered in the GOAT conversation.
Agreed.
Dont think anyone is arguing hes there yet.

and that's what most of us have been saying. Silly to even talk a bout GOAT.

Yeah Martin is a good deliverer of the ball. Way ahead of Danger and Fyfe.

That was my point, Martin was better than everyone this season but GAJ and Buddy still have him well covered for career so far. So too does Dangerfield and probably a couple of others. Which is why talk of the GOAT is silly. He's not even the greatest of right now.

Well in determining the GOAT, are we just looking for the highest peak, or the most sustained brilliance? If it's the latter, Martin will need a fair few more seasons of the same calibre to be in the GOAT conversation.

I mean, Martin has really only had two seasons of truly great football so far (two B&Fs, two AAs, one Brownlow through 2016 and 2017), so he's kind of in the same spot Ablett Jnr was by the end of 2008 (and at that stage, Ablett Jnr was two years younger).
