Opinion Can Dustin Martin be the GOAT? (Answer: no)

Prove that Ablett was better than his peers by more than what Martin is better than his peers right now.

Prove Martin is even 1/2 of the player Ablett is.

Even Ben Cousins was the better Martin. Martins not even the GOAT in his own group. The entire thread is a ****ing abomination.

You can tell some of these kids are too young to remember when Ablett snr kicked 14 off a wing against their club.

Can you imagine how bat shit crazy the millenials would go now if that happened?

Martin is a whole three votes ahead of Dangerfield who missed a game late in the season.

Richmond fans are up and about. I mean, fair play to them, but keep one finger on reality.

He was BOG in 11 of 22 matches and got the most votes ever.

The next eligible player was 11 votes behind.

So because Dangerfield wasn't eligible, he doesn't exist? Bloody hell. The Brownlow is an inadequate measure of greatness anyway. Matthews, Carey and Gaz Sen never won one and they are probably the three best players in recent times. As for record votes, hasn't it been broken three times in three years? Just further highlights its problems.

You're not adjusting for the era.

Kicking 14 goals was very common in Ablett's day, so it's dumb to say "if that happened today, when it's rare, everyone would be more impressed".

In reality, if Ablett Snr played today he would find it more difficult against the super fit, full-time defenders watching vision of him with multiple coaches every single week.

And he'd need the discipline to train extremely hard and be super professional himself.

Ablett Snr might not even be suited to the modern hyper professional and ultra defensive game.

He certainly would never kick 14 goals on a wing in today's game.

You're right about the Brownlow.

My point is Dusty is elevated above his peers by a greater margin.

- Brownlow (most dominant in history)
- Norm Smith
- Premiership
- MVP
- Coach's award
- B&F in premiership year

Achieving all these accolades in a single season, when nobody else ever has, taken as a collective mean Dusty is on the path to being the GOAT because he's just that much better than everybody else. Intangibly, his strength and ability to shrug 90+ tackles compared to the next best of 23 are a thing of beauty, which is also an important subjective element.

The thread question is "can" he be the GOAT, not "is" he.

Ablett's dominance occurred in an era when it was common for multiple players to dominant in similar fashion.

He was a bit more freaky, but if you look at his era, you'll notice his performances weren't as far ahead of his competition compared to Dusty with his year this year.

Like who? It was Ablett then Judd as the clear standouts of that era.

Dustys had one standout year. So has fyfe. So has danger. Lets see him do it for a few years before jizzing

Dusty has been consistently great for a number of years, but not top 10. He has about 130 Brownlow votes already I believed.

I think you're downplaying Dusty's season as "just one season".

It was a perfect season - nobody else has ever done it. This gives his one season noteworthy credibility in these discussions.

Giving him the Normy was taking the piss though tbh

Did you ever see Ablett / Carey / Matthews play ? ? ?
O.k. Dusty has reached a pinnacle.
Let's see him sustain it for the next 7 or 8 years. My bet is it won't happen.

Its predominantly a midfielders medal but Dusty won everything else as well, if he continues at this high level for the rest of his career he will be right up there with the best, lets not forget when we talk about Ablett, Carey etc there were some great players pre TV years as well, Stewart with 3 Brownlows comes to mind.

North's newest recruit?
I hear they are into the kitten up to its eyeballs, have offered it 1.3mil a year over 9 years after missing Dusty and Kelly. Kitten likely to remain with current family.
