Autopsy Cats lose to Swans by 30 points

Best side in the game on their hill won by 30 points.

Got on top early and frankly held our own longer than expected but we reverted to our last 7 week mean after 1/2 time and thet got away from us.

8-5 into the Bye.

10 games left to see where we end up.

Not to many real winners in this one.

Kolo was pretty good all game long.
Stanley first 1/2 was ok

Stengle tried hard and kicked GOTY contender.

Stewy, Jezza, Tomma, Duncan, BLitz all kinda MIA and being shown that the time is coming soon.

Atkins, Bruhn, CLark, Holmes all tried hard and had good moments

Mullin learning. Neale learning but time in VFL to polish skills needed.

Overall - team can't do it for long enough to beat the best teams currently.

Starts in the MF and we just dont have the cattle right now.

Getting PFD and Guth back will help but not that much.

Vent but dont lose your shit.

Meh Syd are in red hot form coming off the bye while the cats have been struggling for the last 6 weeks..it is what it is hopefully the bye does good for the boys and the second half of the year goes well

Good signs from the kids but clearly not up to the swans level

Not too unhappy with that. Thought it might have been a real flogging- swans are very good and were fresh. Tried hard, not playing our best footy for long enough but kept trying. Plenty of good exposure for the kids. Look ready for the bye- rest up and let’s beat Carlton - I’ll be happy if we can just knock off a few annoying teams! Well done cats.

Sydney fresh off a bye with a stacked midfield. We are missing our 2 best mids, and yet to have a bye.

The boys had a red hot crack.

Duncan cooked, unfortunately.

Cameron & Stewart need to get back to all-Australian form.

Bring on the 2nd half of the season.

Hopefully, we get another crack at Sydney at the MCG in the finals.

Not only fresh off one bye - they've had two byes and no five day breaks in the first half of the year. No wonder they can run out games as well as they do with a fixture like that.

Is what it is.

No surprise they got the ascendancy when a real ruckman in Grundy started to get on top in the 2nd.
We haven’t had a proper ruck since Ottens, and Blitz is also getting on.
Also doesn’t help when we have inexperienced mids with low tog compared to other mids, Bruhn only had about 60% today and our best mid last week, Bowes, wasn’t much more on 70%.

Best team won, but Swans coming off a bye was telling in my opinion. They had the legs, we didn't.

I get why we are playing Cameron up the ground....midfield is a mix of in-experienced and getting towards the end, so he is helping out, but it is time to move him back to the forward line...he is a All Australian forward after all!

This may mean rejig of our set up....and some legends may need to be told some hard truths.

We are so close to either clicking into gear or having the wheels come off completely but I’m not sure which one just yet. Pretty decent effort away to the benchmark side, so I’m not overly disappointed. The start was always getting reeled back but tough to see our lead whittled away so quick.

Second half of the season I’d like to see Mannagh and Humphries given a string of games, I don’t think we could hold it against CS to try something that may work, if not now then for the future.

Duncan surely sees some down time. Just want to see a little more leg speed and taking the game on.

On one hand it was great to start the way we did, but like we can do sometimes I feel like we should have been even further up. We got a bit flippant with the ball use (Blicavs again with the left 😭), missed some shots. O’Connor a few clangers. They are a very good side & I didn’t expect us to win, but similar in the 3rd quarter we butchered so many entries.

Just missing some quality ball users, Duncan unfortunately can no longer be relied upon in that regard.
Veterans are what they are, but really worried about SDK. Not impacting, falling over at just about every contest. Kolo was our best defender. Mullin started promisingly but tailed off like a bunch of them. Dempsey non existent until late.

Rhys also started well but then went full Rhys.

The margin flaterred us. But what a great effort. We cracked in all game and tried hard. I'm actually really pleased with the effort today.

These guys are genuine pretenders IMO. If they face a half decent VIC side on the last day in September, they aren't winning it.

If we bring that effort against Carlton, we win.
I don't agree that the margin flattered us. We smashed them in the first quarter and held our own in the third. They caught up in the second and pulled away in the last.

Will be an enormous choke if the Swans don’t win it all this season, they are streets ahead of anyone else.

Can’t fault the effort, the midfield is what it is and no doubt we will go hard to improve it in the off season.

30 points is not really a good reflection on how close it was in the second half. The cats probably should have been only 7 points down with a few minutes to go but fluffed their chance.

I think the cats performed very well considering they have the most inexperienced midfield for at least 20 years. There were plenty of good signs from the younger brigade, plus it was invaluable experience against the top team.

Poor umpiring for that 50 against Hawkins…and then not paid against Sydney for the same thing 10 minutes later. Consistency is all the fans are hoping for.

I'm curious how it plays out in other matches, but something that's can a bugbear of mine in past years is the scheduling around byes

I'm a strong believer that when it comes to this time of the season with the byes staggered across multiple weeks, that the teams you play should be in the same situation at you:
  • teams coming off the bye play against each other
  • teams yet to have a bye face of against each other

Scrap a team yet to have a bye playing a team that's just coming off theirs - this is potentially even more telling this season with 8 teams already having a bye prior to this period
