Buku to come in finally
New Era Glitch GIF by Xbox

Michael please.

Whether you like or not, his team mates will be asking themselves whether they can trust him. Possibly his coach too. And whether it's disclosure or judgement, the result is effectively the same. He didn't perform in a match that mattered and it subsequently comes out that he was unwell before the game. So how does he get on the field? Player disclosure or medical staff? He wanted to play is the best explanation we have thus far. I admire Bevo's protection of his players.

Bevo or any of Bailey's co-workers are not going to say. But, this a problem. The one thing you have to be able to do in these endeavours (and the Pies game was an endeavour of some magnitude) is to be able to trust your team mates. Judgement or disclosure. Lose trust in it, and it's very hard to get it back.

Incidentally, Bailey is 22 years old. This goes to research and this information is freely available on the web. I broached the subjects of reactions (Frankl), research and independent thought on a different thread, Admittedly, reactions was the only one I addressed with a teasing quote from Frankl. The subject of research was next on my hit list. If you'd like tune in when I get around to it there is a follow me facility on BF I believe.
Waitingael please.
You have to be taking the piss.

Sweet to ruck finally, English to play Lobb’s role. Strengthens 2 positions rather than one. Was a strength in 2021, get it done MC

I'm not so sure if Bevo was the only person who broke something during last Thursday's game.

Can report that Liam Jones TV was also broken by one of the (unnamed) members of the rehab group last game, this is coming from JJ who was there.
Supposedly every single one of them watching was ropeable.

Between Lobb/Buku for 2nd ruck role (Sounds like it will be Buku from bevo’s presser)

Happy Buku gets a gig but it’s tough knowing we have Lobb + Darcy with Croft coming also.

We set him up to pretty much get a game a year by keeping him as a forward when we had much bigger needs for someone with his strengths in the backline. Screaming out for someone who can intercept. And I’m not buying the tog % when you look at what JoD has been given. Should have been Bruce spending the vfl season up fwd with buku competing with tob/JoD in the backline.

Anyway hope he goes well but really it’s an audition to help him get a go somewhere else next year.

Hopefully he has a Lobb like Audition for his new club tomorrow night.

Maybe the cynical thinking is "play him for a few games and it'll help us get a better pick for him".

I feel sad for Buku. I know there have been question marks over his one-on-one ability and his tank but to my mind he's never really had a decent shot at it while a few others have had more shots than I thought they deserved.

Every player has weaknesses but we need to look at the upside as well -
  • he's one of the more accurate set shots for goal on our list - it's been a constant issue for us but he's one player who could help solve the problem,
  • he's only 23 so he hasn't yet peaked in his career (compared to someone like TOB) and we don't yet know what his performance ceiling will be,
  • he also hasn't yet peaked physically so the concerns about his strength and endurance might diminish as he approaches his mid-20s
  • he can pinch hit in the ruck when needed, maybe not as well as Lobb but even just neutralising the contest is handy.
I hope MC give him a few games, not just straight back to the VFL if he doesn't star straight off. I hope he makes a go of it and we keep him on the list.

If not, good luck wherever you end up mate. I think there's a deserved place for him somewhere in senior footy.

I have no issue with Buku getting a game just hope they are not setting him up to fail.

We are carrying a few passengers at the moment and have not necessarily been bringing in those playing well in the VFL whilst giving more game time to those simply not performing

Agree with all but the last point he is listed as 191cm and 87kg that is simply not remotely big enough to pinch hit consistently in the ruck (For context Lobb is 207cm 106kg),

It just isn't sustainable to keep him in at that role given he has little forward craft outside of a hit up lead.

For me he is the ideal target for a North who lack another foil for Larkey

I think pessimistically it’s little more than upping his value + a punitive measure for Lobb. Ideally we would be investing this game in Darcy but Buku is the next best choice.

If this was a final there’s no chance in hell we go buku with Lobb available and Darcy injured.

It’s good that we’re giving Buku this chance at least and his vfl performances have been strong for a while. Can’t help but feel that we’ve wasted him though. And he would have to absolutely star to keep his spot, can’t see the club folding on Lobb for good with what we gave up to get him.

Fair comment on the ruck. By "pinch hit" I didn't mean he should be a part of our regular rotations like Lobb is. However when stuck we have in the past put players like Dunkley (190cm, 88kg) into a few ruck contests. After the 3rdMU was outlawed Dunkley never got more than 12 hitouts a season. All he (and similar pinch hitters) needed to do was neutralise the contest so that it's not a clear hitout to advantage to the opposing ruck. Our extractors could then get the disputed clearance maybe 60% of the time. Also Buku has a much better leap than Dunkley has.

As for whether there's a place for him in our structure, well let's see. That's all I'm asking. We constantly get people saying player x, y or z is going to be better at AFL level than VFL level. Why not Buku as well? With a creative coach (current one or future incumbent) and a clearly defined role there might end up being a niche for him. If he only got 6 kicks a game but averaged 2 goals and attracted a minder I'd take that.

I agree that on the balance of what we've seen so far (from both Buku AND the coaching staff) there might not be a long term role for him at VUWO. I just want to see us give him a shot to prove it one way or the other.

Worth a try but unlikely to happen.

one thing is for sure Sweet will be an emergency again.

Dunkley was hardly used as a ruck it was Cordy and Schache,

Buku's leap isn't that useful when the blokes with 20kg push him out the way with ease.

Buku is simply because of the role he plays he won't get the amount of targets he gets at VFL level and can't offer the same level of ruckwork required for the role.

I saw enough in the Geelong game last year that it'll never work which is why I was surprised we continued with it this year and din't put him down back again which is where I think he may have a chance of making it with us long term
