Well if you are going to experiment with an extra tall forward line, against GC is the game to do it.

One thing it will help is defending kick outs, will have a good spread of talls to try to avoid, and also kicking out ourselves, plenty of options.

The mids are going to need to be smart kicking inside 50, avoid any outnumbers where they can quickly sweep the ball away.

Generally the teams on the field are a lock. The interchange is where the outs come from.
Not sending the right message to a youngster like Cerra, if true, though. Hogan and Matera in, you would be stiff as a second year player out of position.
It is true that the 18 on the field have to play barring a legitimate injury according to afl rules, but its not true that being named deep on a bench means nothing other than afl paperwork. Selection certainties are very often named on the bench and means nothing. Mundy was named on the bench more than a few times last year. David Swallow is the last man named on the interchange bench this week. With Giro, Crowden and Duman likely outs Matera can still be not named as can Shultz. Both far more likely to be the last omission than Cerra in my view considering we wont play 8 forwards as it would stuff up rotations. Against the majority view on here I know, but Cerra could actually benefit from playing a few games with high game time in the midfield at Peel this year if we get Blakely back with no other injuries later in the year because he'll probably have to play more half back than onball with Blakely in the team. Cerra's unproven as a half back so far this year and if that continues there is benefit at giving him time to work on playing his long-term role at a lower level for a short period this year, even if it just to keep his best player attributes sharp and work on weaknesses in how he plays his most suited position. Mundy is holding Cerra's long term inside mid role warm while he works on increasing his endurance and strength even if Cerra isnt named every week this year, which I expect him to be barring every person on the squad being available for selection.

Interestingly when West Coast played Gold Coast in Round 4 last year they had Naitanui ruck, and had Lycett, Kennedy, Darling, Waterman, and Le Cras all in their forward line.

They won 139 to 59. Kennedy kicked 5, Darling 3, Le Cras 2, Waterman 1, Lycett 1, Cripps 4, Rioli 2, Venables 1. Masten was the only non-forward to kick a goal and he kicked 2. So 19 goals from just their forward line. It was at Optus though (after GC lost to us at Optus the week before).

Since when have West Coast been the benchmark?
In any event my recollection is they had L Ryan, W Rioli, M Lecras and Cripps in there forward line last year.
We have Walters and um banfield.

Cerra has no business being anywhere but the AFL. We’ve been lacking class for years & he brings it. Having good decision makers like him & Tucker bobbing up makes such a difference to forward entry & general ball movement.
He’s Chris Judd-esque, like he was at west coast. Has no business being in WAFL and should play the rest of his career in AFL. Has too much talent and class.
Making the mistake tbh. Hogan in then Cerra out will make him think. He’s been training the house down, got muscle and no problems off the field. But because Hogan is an A grader, that exempts him.
Look I get mental health etc. but it doesn’t need to be at the expense of a young player like Cerra. Ballas was fine, Matera doesn’t really give us anymore of a boost then Cerra.
As a matter of fact, play Cerra in Matera’s role as small forward and probably will do better. Ross with his selections, playing players for needs.

Since they won last years premiership. McCarthy could play a similar role to Cripps, roaming linking up play and kicking 1.5 goals a game ish. Good chance one of Shultz or Swita could play a similar role to W.Rioli as well. Hogan similar to Darling, great leading speed plays tall and has high tackle numbers. Lobb similar to Lycett in terms of tall forward who rucks 30% ish of game. Walters to Le Cra mixing roaming and playing close to goal. Bennell similar to Ryan in terms of goal kicking prowess if he finally gets his body right. By the end of the year our structure could end up very similar to the West Coast forward structure last year and that would be a very good thing. West Coast won a premiership despite finishing 5th in terms of forward 50 entries in the regular season. Didnt lose a game with Darling and Kennedy in the team.

Yeah I agree. The only way I see it happening is if he gets multiple weeks without any or little mid time and isnt doing well half back.

That is usually the case however players from the field have been omitted before.

The interchange is never listed in order anyway, Cerra isn't out yet, its very likely he is still in, so don't get too riled up as of yet.

The only reason Cerra would not play is if he pulled up sore. He copped a few heavy knocks, watching the replay this was apparent. His skill level to spot a target and hit it with a low flat kick is impressive. Exactly what we need. He is still young and developing so, not a game to risk anyone if they have pulled up not 100%. He is comfortably in the best 22 even with our full list available.

Cerra had a mildly quiet game, but still made a reasonable contribution. No dramas. Certainly not something to question his place in the 22 about, and anyway, minimal changes are what will help the team develop chemistry and settle the game plan in. Let them ride a little of the euphoria together. You don't want players questioning their place in the team, especially after a great win.

So we go from a forward line last year of one key forward, McCarthy (not a small nor a tall) and a mosquito squad, to an abundance of oversized beasts. Gold Coast look worse on paper than we did last year, even at the height of our injuries which was substantial! The Suns won 4 last year with one win from their last 14 games. We managed 8 wins last year, scraping through to beat the Crows and Port in the last 11 rounds.
In a dismal year, plagued with injuries we still made 8 wins which is not the end of the world. If anything the list at Gold Coast is further depleted, and on the contrary we have most of our list available, a strong forward line, and an extra year in a host of players.

I will be surprised if we do not win this by 40+.

There is no bottom half of the bench. They dont name them in order. I dont think we will play 8 forwards. (Hogan, Lobb, Tabs, Walters, McCarthy, Matera, Shultz, Banfield). Means in my view its a choice between Matera or Shultz. Think we definitely need the forward pressure of Banfield. Hoping for Shultz.

I agree. If Schultz is 100% fit he plays. If not Matera is in. I reckon Matera travels as the emergency.

Why all this worry about Cerra out. For a start the final team isn’t named until tomorrow afternoon. Cerra along with Tucker will be the first two names added to the interchange from there it becomes a bit more of a raffle:
Schultz vs Matera (if fit Schultz)
Hughes vs Duman (Hughes was ok. A few mistakes but one would hope he can iron these out a little with more game experience - has serious speed)

The other two (Giro and Crowden) just making up the numbers.

Lobb recruitment has been great for big Darcy. The ruck support Lobb provides allows the big fella to get necessary rest and to go hard when he is in the field. Great combination Lobb and Darcy.

Swallow with his knee injury (bone bruising) would have to be doubtful. Will find out tomorrow but perhaps Will Brodie in for Swallow. With his history of knee injuries you just wouldn’t take the chance you would think.

Is there room for Tabs Hogan Lobb and McCarthy in the forward line? I dont think so

Why can't people see that Tabs just isnt that good
I don't think its a case of Tabs being that good, it's more that he isn't that bad. a bit like Jenkins/Lynch (i cant remeber which one - which highlights my point :tearsofjoy:) you don't really want to like them but they get the job done well enough

Cox will come into consideration in a couple of weeks too.
look we have enough of a hard time trying to fit in all these KPF as it is, don't be throwing another one at us to find a home for - never been said by a Freo supporter EVER :tearsofjoy::tearsofjoy::tearsofjoy:
and how good does that feel!!!

In this new interview https://www.fremantlefc.com.au/vide...c-and-effort-got-it-done-on-the-weekend-lyon- Ross says that he doesn't really consider McCarthy a tall and he is very mobile. Ross plays his cards close to his chest on Hogan, with a welfare first message. It does sound to me like he considers having all of Tabs, Lobb, Hogan and McCarthy in the same forward line.
Yeah, I picked up on that too and came to the same conclusion.
i also think its probably the opportunity to try it GC this week St Kilda next week. a little bit of time to see if they can work together or not
