Not fussed over a couple of line ball selections. We’re going to be backing in our senior guys and yo-yoing our fringe players based on form so I can live with that for now. Im more concerned with our game plan. Let’s please just move the ball quicker out of defence, take a few risks and take the game on a bit more. If we can break even with the i50’s by pressing up and keeping it locked in our half I’ll be happy. Time to evolve a bit each week now we’ve got most guys back and nothing to lose.

I must confess that I was being slightly over the top in my post. I’m surprised, I would have thought there would be universal love with the two “unlucky” ones returning to the side. But still grumbling. Ah well 🤷‍♂️

I'm clearly not a Nelson basher, but I'm pretty surprised he's still in the side.

What exactly is his role Simpson? With all his limitations as a footballer, If he is playing ahead of Rotham, what does that say about Rotham? Might as well cut him.

Not convinced by this balance of midfielders to forwards we've got going on either. Like everyone else, I can totally see XON and West getting stranded on a HFF, having minimal minutes in the midfield, getting 12 disposals, then dropped next week for Gaff.

It's clearly evident that Nelson is this years' version of the Masten Brander aerobic sweeper defensive wing zone space and watch the opponent run past like a useless witches' hat role.

It hasn't worked for over three years so why stop now :drunk:

Too tall again but if Waterman plays more of a swing man role than purely fwd it doesn't look too bad. Interested to see the Strnadica/Williams combo

Be good to see West and O'Neill get actual mid time aswell, not holding my breath

A swing man role?? The only swing man he plays like is nelson as he mirrors his 5 metres behind his opponent’s style…

Going to be a rinse and repeat of every game he has played the the two years.. getting no where near the ball and being behind a defender who has run down the ground to provide an option but looking stuffed so people think he is working hard and please none of this throw him behind the ball garbage.. he doesn’t know where to position himself or read the play to impact a contest…

What do you mean this year?? He has been the same for years… people say he has mongrel but who has he run through, tackles remotely strongly or even started a push and shove with to earn this tag

Tough to go without Gov again.

The changes though….I like them this week.

Sucks to be without Dixon but Big Dica is a genuine ruck who could shoulder the load while NN is down. Fingers crossed he can hold his own.

Jones and Langdon have both had their moments this year - but I doubt there is a place for both of them in the team given neither are particularly strong ball winners. O’Neill took a step forward (finally) against the Pies, so let’s see him back that up. I like West as a hard worker adding depth in the middle.

Rotham…well he’s been awful this year - is it possible that for the last 2 seasons it actually WAS Brander and we accidentally delisted the wrong one?

Huge if true.

Waterman in…well…it gives us another option up forward if Darling is MIA again…which appears to be reasonably likely based on the season thus far.

Side is almost as good we can get on paper.

Would still prefer Petrevski-Seton over Waterman and Hough over Nelson, but they are not drastic changes.

Problem is, the club's coaching prefers a tactical approach that sets the team up for failure; the strength and conditioning team keep giving the green light to players when they are clearly unfit; and the commitment of much of the playing group has appeared questionable on-field for almost a year now.

Squad selection appears to be a far lesser worry compared to other areas that need to be addressed.

At no point there did I make praise of Nelson.

Just pointed out that he is being used in the zoning role that has been tactically redundant since early 2019.

Maybe, just maybe, we're actually tanking but simply trying to look bad so we don't get caught out?

I choose to believe...

Reasonably happy with the changes and good to see some extra run with XON and Westy added to the midfield something we really lacked last week ..

Good to see Rotham omitted he has been disappointing hopefully he comes back in more committed and focussed on defending his opponent ..

Jones looks banged up /battered and bruised for a few weeks now after showing some very good signs of taking his game to another level being omitted now he can recover and enjoy a step down ..

Waterman should be put in the pocket beside JK and told to take his player on opposite leads as a option ..

When I look at Ports line up I think were a chance.

Wines back is big for them.

He will lift their spirits.

Hopefully we can go as close as possible to breaking even in the middle and it could be interesting.

I think either way its set for an ugly scrapfest

can see something like

Port 11.8
WCE 9.9

Agree with both being a bit too tall up front (Waterman) and Hough I'd love to see in but he's a tough one to fit in.... He does look very composed with ball in hand though which is great to see.

It is nice to see a midfield option in defence (Nelson), attack (Rioli) and two on the bench (West and O'Neill). Last week it was just Roili and Yeo outside of the three named midfielders. That's comfortably my favourite part about selection this week.

I'd definitely have SPS in for Waterman. That's the only change I would 100% make from that 22. I like Jake and he gives it everything but he's a hard one to fit into a team that has JK, JD and two rucks.

I'd be very tempted to bring in Hough, most likely for Nelson but that does take away a tagging option which I'm not super thrilled about. Line ball call. Whichever is not picked I would have as sub.

Jones is unlucky and I'd probably kept him in front of West but Jones only has himself to blame because he is insanely inconsistent, even taking into account that he seems to be nursing a slight hammy strain. Another line ball call.

I can't complain too much given Gov and Gaff were still unavailable and Dixon was uninjured. My two most pressing requests where XON and Stranad to be in's and both have occurred.

As the team is now I would have Jones as sub.

Masten for all his faults slugged it out and played his role in the end. Brander is a soft spud and now a fail at two clubs. It's an insult to compare him to Nelson.

The way Rotham is trending he will be cut.

I think that is probably role driven rather than talent (as others have said), but still, if he is going to be asked to defend mid sized forwards who are decent overhead and also to stop and prop when getting possession (rather than just going quickly which seems more natural to him) then he may as well go. Those aren't his strengths, and in doing so we stop him using his strengths (pace and kicking).

For this match, if Nelson was out it would/should be Hough back in. That, along with SPS or Jones (who has been poor for a few weeks) for Waterman would be the only minor changes that would be sensible. Gov obviously comes in next week but if he's not right this week then I'm glad he isn't playing and hope that is a step in the right direction for the MC.

I agree we are too tall, but forgetting the fact you don't like him as a player, IF he plays more up the ground and dropping back behind the ball (as he has done at times in the past), it makes the fwd line look more palatable. I'd have preferred to keep Jones or give Hough another game.

If we are just planning on paying 4 talls up there, or giving Strnadica/Williams 60% TOG each and messing up our rotations just to play two rucks like we always seem to do when NNs playing, then it's business as usual and dumb selection imo
