This is largely our preferred structure though. Our defenders are defenders only. Our forwards are forwards only. Small group of outside mids and a small group of stoppage mids. Of those, an even smaller group that rest on the field. It’s not until the last quarter that we throw a kid that’s a mid by trade, but a forward by selection, into the middle for a crack. Or the McAsey/Lynch switch. We need a lot more flexibility throughout the entire match, we’re such a static football philosophy. It’s why good coaches have been able to pull us apart even in our good years.
Didn't we try that whole flexibility thing when Pyke first started.

Douglas to half back - failed
Douglas to half forward - failed
Jones to half forward - failed
Milera to half back, full forward, wing - too confused
Jacobs / ROB switching at FF - fail
Betts into the middle - fail
Atkins into the middle - fail

There need to be some SMEs, so if it's only 5 players who are in the CBA, that's fine. They just need to be bloody good at it.

Younger players also need some stability to learn their position, so McAsey needs to be forward or back (personally I liked him forward), Fog stays forward (maybe 2 mins per qtr in the middle), Ned gets the wing, Milera stays at HB where he has played his best and Jones as one of the 5 CBA players switching on the wing with Sloane, Brouch

I'd love to say to Matt Crouch:

"Mate, this week you are playing on Matt Rowell. If he ever gets more than 3m away from you when we don't have the ball, you won't be in the team next week. He's only played 2 games, so it shouldn't be a problem for you. I want to see you running defensively"
I would rather have Jones and McHenry rotating the load at times on him (Rowell)
This Lad O'connor has a good Bio on him it's time to test the waters
Adelaide has to get 2 way runners into the Middle Hence
Schoenberg,Jones,McHenry,

McPherson, Hamill, Galluci and McAdam in.
Kelly (inj), Atkins, Crocker and Murphy out.

Brown Talia McAsey
Laird Doedee Smith

Seedsman Crouch Milera
ROB Crouch Jones

Sloane Walker Keays
McAdam Fogarty Lynch

McPherson Hamill Galluci
McHenry
Why does Seedsman stay in and Crocker misses ??

Keays stays in.

I've said it 1000 times, once you pick a new player you don't give him a week and then discard him. You back him for a 3/4 week block and then make a judgement.

There's no point bringing in a guy for a week, same goes for Davis who should never have been dropped.

Probably against the norm here, but all for everyone taking a week off after a concussion (med/heavy) like Jake did. A players health and well being should be be prioritised above all else. At the end of the day, they have to live with the side effects for the rest of their lives.

I don't reckon you're against the norm at all.

As much as I would like to see it, I can't see too many changes this week. I think the players will be given one more week to give them a chance to bounce back after that loss. The only changes I think that will happen will be Kelly and Sloane if they don't pull up.

If we lose this week then I think it will be a different story next week. We could then see some wholesale changes made with some senior guys left out.

What is the story with Ben Davis ?
I see talent but is he just not focussed or committed ?

Focussed and committed enough to be selected for round 1 and then show a couple of good signs which is all you can really ask of a player ahead of the ball with a failing midfield in front of him. Nicks has an opportunity this week to bin the bullshit up/down process that the kids deal with. I'd be as pissed with Keays being dropped as I would Mackay or Gibbs getting selected. And I see no value in Keays at all. But we've got to give guys a chance to adapt to the level. Perfect example is McHenry. It's easy to say that he tried hard but just not yet up to the pace. He's not going to get used to the pace in the SANFL.

I actually have a close friend who's running around in the WB system. Said that Bevo for all his faults, has a very firm policy to give kids he brings in at least a month, regardless of form.

I think its smart. Allows the kids to adjust to the pace of the AFL and learn from any early mistakes that would be surely put down to nerves/inexperience.

I still think McHenry should've been given a run before he hurt his back mid last year. He was in great form in the SANFL up until then.

I think if it's for a 1 week injury it's fair, which is possibly what might happen here with Sloane and Kelly. When Davis got a game, the communication should have been, "we're giving you 3 or 4, provided your work rate and intensity is up to scratch." I've no problem with Sholl getting told, "Kelly will come back in next week, so don't be disappointed if you only get the 1 game on this occasion". They're different scenarios for players to get a game. Davis earned his by being selected ahead of the rest, stupidity that it could change after only the 1 game and 3 months in between. Sholl would be getting his only as injury cover. Disappointing yes, but not actually a problem.

That's the problem that we have done so many times before though.

Play shockingly. Abysmal. Totally rubbish. Traffic cones would be embarrassed to be associated with us.

So we back the boys in to redeem themselves. This kind of performance was an outlier, a one off. Let's see if they can respond. Okay, then we face up against a Gold Coast, a St Kilda or any team we well and truly have the measure of. And what happens? Our senior guys - the stinkers from the week before, they look like superstars. The band's back together guys! Nicks spike! Honourable prelim loss here we come!

No. This needs to change, and it needs to change this week. We ring the changes. Line in the sand. Let the kids look like superstars against a team we match up against well with instead of the usual suspects (if we can beat the 2020 Suns that is).

Actually, nothing happened in 3 months. You may not be aware, but we've got this covid thing going on.
And different players come back from the CV19 lay over in different conditions. A lot can happen, it just didn't happen on the field where we could see it.

It's not the 80s, I don't think anyone is expecting or judging Kelly for not playing next week.

There are a few of us that rather see him not get his spot back (I assume I'm not alone in this regard), but that's more on our defense being dour as **** and Kelly being the weakest link.

Pyke at the time said that Port's draftees were at different stages of their development. Chayce had played 4 but returned into the SANFL and McHenry was going good. Oddly, both these guys were first rounders and arrived with huge wraps on their fitness but needed SANFL development, whereas Port's guys just rolled straight in and stayed. Rozee a gun, so is a little different, I do get that. But we're playing Mackay, Knight and Douglas types. Jones got 8 games in 3 goes, 4, 2 and 2 games. ROB finally got a crack due to Sauce medium term injury, even then was replaced late and Davis got a single game in a typical loss at kardinia park were all the forward line were putrid.
