Can not be a hard and set directive, he must have licence to go for a slightly riskier high reward type kick in if he senses it surely.
We have seen him do it. I don't think it is fair to put all the blame on Rich. From the TV it looks like the guys aren't giving him a lot of options. When he has done the short kick and follow up before he often seems close to getting caught with the ball which results in a similar contest, just 20m down the field.

Last one dayer vs India tonight, then the AFL season kicks off tomorrow night.

They've certainly timed that perfectly.

Edit: If we go 0-4 then cricket season lasts until the Test Cricket World Championship in June. Then the footy season starts. Hopefully we'll have leveled up the ledger by then :tongueout:
And if that doesn’t work, the Ashes will be on from July - August and then it’s back to summer of cricket again over here and Brisbane would have never existed in the 2023 season and would just prepare for 2024 ;)

Ashes also and that Pommy quick Archer looks like he might be fit.

I paid way too much money and got myself a big flat screen in 2005 and watched that fantastic ashes series. I just loved it, even though we lost, I think 2-1, Kaspa edged a ball two runs short and Freddy puts his arm around Lee.

Was that the one where replays showed Kaspa actually didn't edge it... replays showed the hand was off the bat handle, OR was that another player in another close loss?

McGrath stepping on a stray cricket ball at training stopped us winning that series.

Well at least we got revenge back in Australia 18 months later and won 5 - 0 against those Poms.

This week I’d keep the changes minimal. I think Fort, Zorko and Prior will play. See how we respond.

I just hope this year we aren’t so risk averse when it comes to dropping players or trying something diff. If we are going to continue to cop 90 plus a week we need to be brutal with pulling out players that aren’t switched on defensively. If it doesn’t work so be it. But I think we suffered a bit last year from just sticking with the same game style and starting core players.

When you have a look at the forward line it’s probably the most unaccountable forward six group going around. Especially in the top 10 or so teams. Cameron for all his speed hardly lays a finger on a player. McCarthy slow always slow to react in transition. Daniher off with the fairies. Hipwood just not strong enough. Gunston never known for his chasing. It’s like we are playing with 5 tall forwards.

I am not sure from memory, no reviews back then, he was given out edging it, but perhaps you are correct. That makes it worse if true because we won at Lords and winning the second test would have meant retaining the ashes.

Yes correct, McGrath arguably the best fast/medium bowler in the world at the time is out because he rolled his ankle on a tennis or cricket ball in the warm up, we win the toss and bowl first (without McGrath) and we negate Warne from bowling at England on the last day.

I am glad I am close to retirement because watching the footy and the ashes this winter might just pull me up

If Dayne Zorko comes back this week I would send him straight to Harrison Petty in the F50.

Australia wins the toss & elects to bat. Music to my ears. I was really trying to be good on a school night, but some beers might be required.

Edit: to make this less of a derail, I don't think we should rush Zorko back.

There. That should do it.

Rich to me at the moment is like Russ Tyler from mighty ducks and his knuckle puck shot.
When his work comes off it looks great. But opposition teams maybe have worked him out like Iceland worked out Russ Tyler.
He did score a crucial goal in the end by wearing the goalies kit though? Dunno, could be the move.

I do think though that opp forwards would be quietly happy if matched up on Rich, which to me is the worry.

Rich was the only player that rocked up on Saturday yet is one of players questioned most by fans in the aftermath. I don’t get it.

In moments of distress we all return to our original and favourite whipping boys.

Kick ins are a set play. That is the coaching and not Rich.
I'm not sure Rich has the speed to do that consistently, I would back Kiddy, Zorks and Rayner (probably with brute strength rather than speed) could do that though. Starce as well but I can't recall him being a great kick.

Could you beat the zone by having all of your players on one side? Either out numbering the oppo to an extent that you're almost guaranteed to win the contest or if the oppo players follow, could you have your quickest player k to the other side and kick it into space for him?

I am well aware it is a set play. The fact is, it does not work. Give any of the above, or Kiddy the kickins and mix it up a bit.

got to say - talk of Gunston moving back after one game is just crazy. We got him to be the difference in our forward line! He is a leading player we need to get used to kicking to. Would be the last key forward i’d move back

On Rich he has never been quick. He is no longer doing 2 things he excelled at in his AA year - intercepting loose kicks and hitting up gutsy options when kicking. Has he lost his tank? Confidence to read the play? Confidence to kick? Whatever it is he has fallen off a long way. His intercepting was brilliant in 21 - he was basically Hodge…

IIRC Daniel was excellent in our first 2 finals games . He hadn't fallen that far if you watch those 2 matches 2 games ago.

Let's give it another couple of games before writing anyone off.

Having said that if we go anything like last week again he won't be the only one in the gun.

pretty sure in one of the internal scratch matches we had rayner playing loose man in defence as a 7th defender

i think our forward line is good enough to the point we can afford to have rayner play loose 7th man to shore up our backline and not lose our offensive flair

just need midfield to not capitulate at centre bounces with 6-6-6 rule so we have time to get the 7th man back

I agree with the mids not capitulating. A lot of focus on backs and forwards. The ONLY focus should be our unaccountable midfield. You could have the All Australian forward/back line with our midfield playing like that and they would look average.

We play an attacking game style but the concern for me is where that leaves some of our players when the game is not on our terms. We regularly had players go missing for long stretches in games last year and against Port was no different. Cameron, McCarthy, Berry, Hipwood, Daniher, Robertson, Tunstill, Gunston all MIA basically all game. 8 best 22 players. I think we need to be better at finding ways to get these guys involved in tough games, or more accurately these players have to contribute more in these games somehow.
