It is the dictionary definition of a dead rubber

Plenty of Champion teams have strategically rested players down the stretch.

The benefit of stitching up top two with 2 games remaining is that we DON'T have to go hammer and tongs the next fortnight, whereas every other club does. That is our key advantage.

Only a dead rubber if you are happy to finish 2nd. We need to win 1 more Game to be Grantee 1st position.
Need to remember they have a bye before the final to rest up.

Completely meaningless.

Outside of 3rd maybe being a tad better than 4th, 1st and 2nd are the same in terms of rewards; considering the bye I'd be more for getting 3rd place first up, and hoping 4th gets to the preliminary.

Let's assume that Talia, Walker and Sloane don't play, who do we select?

Sydney will play three tall forwards; Franklin - 199 cm, Reid - 196 cm, Tippett - 202 cm / Sinclair 199 cm.
Naismith - 206 cm might come in for either Tippett or Sinclair. If Talia misses then we have Keath - 198 cm and Lever - 195 cm. Without Talia, Hartigan and Otten who is next in line as a tall defender? The only defender over 190 cm is Harry Dear :D.

If we are to replace Tex with a like-for-like tall forward, the only tall forward over 190 cm is Harry Dear :D (no spots to upgrade Hunter) and ROB is a bit of a stretch.

That leaves finding an inside mid to replace Sloaney. From the Twos we have Thommo (only joking 1970Crow), Wigg, Gallucci and Poholke. Unfortunately Dean Gore is being re-engineered as a defender.

So.......................

Out - Talia, Walker and Sloane
In - Dear, Dear and Thompson

Looks pretty good to me.

Dear and Dear at CHF and CHB - would be like watching Shaun McKernan dominate at both ends for all those years. #smacktalk

In all seriousness though, Doedee, Menzel and Gallucci would be the 3 most likely ins if it came down to it. We'd be undersized in defence, and a hopelessly inexperienced and ill-equipped player would be given the job on Buddy.

It won't happen. An absolute maximum of 2 of those 3 players will miss (this is also extremely unlikely), with the most likely outcome being that all 3 play, or just 1 of them misses. Personally I think Tex is the most likely to miss the game.

I think we'll name an unchanged side on Thursday, with Menzel a certainty to be one of the 3 emergencies.

I couldn't give a fig if we finish 1st or 2nd. There's no practical difference, given the way the finals are structured. The only differences are the awarding of the McLellan Trophy, and getting to play Richmond in the 1st week of the finals.

What I do care about is not giving Sydney a mental edge. Lose this, and the demons from last year's final grow bigger. Win, and they're exorcised, and Sydney have something to think about.

Not to mention the added benefit of keeping Sydney outside of the top 4 for finals. I know we shouldn't care about the other teams in the finals as we need to beat the entire competition to win the flag, but come on, do we really want Sydney to get the double chance? No thankyou

I guess some people would rather play the Cats or Giants over the Tigers since finishing 1st is 'meaningless'.
I think we actually match up quite well against the Giants, or more importantly they match up quite poorly against us. And as far as the Cats, would you prefer to play them when you have a double chance or in an elimination final?

BTW, this is not me wanting to finish second at all, I was more just commenting on your statement.

I'd love to play the Cats in a prelim at Adelaide Oval. Would be the most satisfying victory since 2015.

Pushing ourselves to the limit? I don't see how that is true if Tex and Sloane are fit to play?
You didnt see them get injured on Saturday? Did you watch? Have you seen Sloane state he will need to do a huge amount of recovery to get up? Surely its better to get him 100% fit for the finals when win or lose we are set as top 2.

This seems very hard for you to comprehend! What's the reward for taking a risk with our 2 biggest assets? If we needed the 4 points sure but we dont :)

You and others can't seem to comprehend what our coach has stated about resting players.
That they won't take any risks with players but if they are fit they will play?

So what are we arguing about? If there are risks with any players they shouldn't play.

It's a dead rubber in terms of ladder position. But that's not the main consideration here.

Agree. Would prefer to have to play Richmond at AO in week 1 than the Cats or even possibly Sydney if they beat us.

If we win this week then next week is the true dead rubber. it means we secure top spot and more than likely playing the Tigers at AO.

Then it only becomes a matter of consistency of playing v resting players. That I can't decide on and will leave it up to the club to judge. They have done everything right thus far this year when it comes to player management.

You admit it's a dead rubber for us... then go on to say it's about exorcising demons.

Beating them in a dead rubber exorcises exactly zero finals demons.

You know what exorcises finals demons? Winning finals.

Winning does not mean we get Richmond week 1. That has more to do with how they and the Cats go in the next 2 weeks. This week is a dead rubber for us.

This, however, is an argument I agree with. Knocking Sydney out of top 4 contention is important.

But not quite important enough to risk Sloane and Tex if they're anything less than 100%.

They play Freo and Saints. At least 1 win there. Which will keep them 4th as long as we beat the Swans. Its also about keeping the Swans out of the top 4.

If players are declared fit by the club at this stage, knowing everything that they know, then they are good to go. No point in resting them for a rests sake. With the Bye we may be in the spot where we only play 2 games in 4 weeks. They will have lots of time to rest up.

These are not injuries that will get worse. They are just a sore toe/knee. Nothing is broken or torn. They will heal given time. Time they will have against West Coast possibly or the bye afterwards.
