So we go with the same lineups and hope they all get faster during the off season?

How else do we bring more pace in to the side? Who on our list walks in and helps with that?

So they’re just making up the numbers. I’d rather have a look at Clarke or Freijah, or play Bedendo. Or move Gallagher to their spot and bring Jack in.

I’ve no issue with selection either. Certainly not why we lost last week.

The insanity comment from Bev - He’s clearly referencing wanting more pace in the side compared to the last few years. (McNeil and VDM in, Macrae out and Daniel sub). It hasn’t worked as of one game this season, but the decision has been made to try and change things up.

Surely supporters can’t be upset that the coaches are trying different things to get different results? Isn’t that what most have been demanding?

Neither VDM nor McNeil features in any of the top 5s per the tracker. Bont and West hit the highest top speeds, Gallagher covered the most distance at high speed, CD and Sanders highest average speed, and nobody except JJ notable for sprints. If they've been brought in for their pace, they're not using it much.

Genuinely first time since joining this site that I believe everyone on here would do a better job than our weak excuses for coaches

And low PA & tackle numbers on top of it

This is something I don't get. Mc Neil has never been really quick and since multiple injuries neither is VDM. Both fumble and make poor decisions, not sure sure the speed argument for them being in is supported by evidence or has any substance

Noticed in the presser that he just straight up lied about Aaron Naughton being a forward in his juniors and only switching to backline close to his draft year. Watch any podcast with Naughton and you'll know that's just not true.

On the topic of list quality and depth, we have 5 blokes selected in the squad this week who have previously been delisted. I find that interesting.
I think it's no secret that the JUH & Darcy drafts wiped out a crucial selection of picks that would have otherwise hopefully provided 3-4 guys that would be close to best 22 players by now.

That being said, I'd much prefer to be trialling guys like Bedendo, Clarke & AJ over some of the names we consistently pick.

Our pressure/intensity last week was pathetic.

I was interested in Ross Wilson's comment questioning the concept of being able to 'flick the switch' if you haven't done the work in preseason.

Sunday is an absolute acid test. If we fail again with intensity it will be an absolute indictment on Beveridge.

No, what supporters have been demanding is not persisting with players who have consistently underperformed.

Fine, change things up, but don't give us the fact things are being 'changed up' by going back to the well with players that failed over and over.

Putting injuries aside, I would take throwing in Clarke, O'Driscoll, Bedendo, Busslinger, Freijah, than the real 'definition of insanity' and persisting with the same sub-par players expecting a different result.

So you were demanding these players be selected for round 1? Or is it only now in hindsight the coaches should have played them and at the time you were ok they didn’t?

McNeil selection last week was warranted. He’s been good in pre season games so so deserved his spot.

VDM the only one I think should be questioned, but again, the coaches have decided the types they wanted in and went down that path. Saying again though, I think he misses that game if O’Driscoll was ready.

As these threads demonstrate, consistency of argument isn't exactly a strong point of the more frequent posters on bigfooty.

Spot on. They often lose track of what they’re angry at.

Being angry all the time does that to a person though I suppose.

I was fine with the selection gamble, thought it would coincide with a real change in how we played. Disappointingly it did not. Personally I would much much rather see Clark out there instead of McNeil but that’s not a game changing move.

I am pissed off that we did make a statement selection, on the basis that Macrae and Caleb aren’t suited to the current style of footy (which was said here a lot last year), but then collectively didnt fire a shot after the first 15 minutes of the game. That has to be the biggest concern. If this is how it’s going to be we may as well be playing Macrae and Caleb.

It just looks like there’s zero desire out there and has looked that way for a while. Obviously Bevo is not telling them to go out there and not lay a finger on the other team but it’s clear whatever the message is supposed to be (both when we have the ball and when we don’t) the players aren’t listening/don’t care. Especially bad look to come out like that in round 1 after last year too. They may deny it but it looks like classic, apathetic ‘coach lost the players’ footy.

Think the leash would be very short and Bevo has to salvage something in the next 2-3 games.

I'm OK with trying different line ups.

My main disappointment was the game plan. From preseason it looked like we were changing this up
  • non stop defensive pressure and tackling
  • fast ball movement, but patience if nothing on
  • no more bombing it long and hoping
  • no more everyone going for the same mark
  • Naughton playing higher up the ground
  • mixing up the midfield rotations.

This just didn't happen in Round 1. It's only one game though so willing to wait and see.

One positive is that a player response to a lack of defensive pressure and tackling can happen overnight to an extent. If we bring that it will be a significant improvement over last week.

The defense was much shorter and mobile for sure, a welcome change from going three key defenders last season. Obviously a lot to do with cattle with Jones the only key defender they believe is AFL ready. I’m not totally convinced we won’t be back to three key defenders when Gardner gets fit but hopefully we keep the more mobile defense with JOD straight back in when he is available.

Other than that and Macrae being on the outer, there has been no noticeable change with the team or the strategy. Granted its hard to base off one round where we played extremely poorly. Still went with the same centre bounce quartet for the entire game with no change up. Vandermeer and McNeil have played 45 and 43 AFL games, they are hardly new ins. They’ve played less than 10 VFL games since getting their debuts. Vandermeer played half back for 10 of those games last season but has primarily played forward half for his career.

People going on about leg speed - you look quick in defence if you have proper structures in place to slow the opposition and support each other and you look quick in attack when you have proper leading patterns and ball movement - that is all on the coach. Leg speed is overrated if you running around like a headless chook.
