Rarely, if ever, does a trade UP the draft order work in that teams favour.

You'd have to be super keen on a player and super happy to overpay for sed player to be doing that move. Look at how stupidly Fold Coast did it to get Sharp, who tried leaving their joke club 2 seasons later. Look at Carlton's genius move to get Liam Stocker... who they have now cut completely.

Look how much we've all enjoyed Ports 2nd rounder this year just so they could get Sinn, despite us likely getting Chesser anyway.

Seriously, if Fold Coast want to take speculative Ginbey with 5, let them.

Sheesh. They'll probably take a 4th Rounder for him plus throw in their future 1st in 2 years time before going into administration. Zero concern IMO.
But only to Geelong. And of course Geelong will play hard ball and GC will end up paying part of his salary as well.

Edit - but agree. Don't want to trade up to 5 and then use it on Ginbey. Don't want him at 8/9 and would rather Hewett at 12/13. If by a miracle he slides to 20, go for it.

Yep I'd take that mock Eagles draft every day of the week!
It still feels the core need of rebuilding the midfield. It removes the issue people have in drafting Busslinger when he isn't a need now (I've made my own contrasting feelings on the matter quite well known however). Allen may be taken too high, he is the big question mark there. Darcy Jones may well slide (where that pick 40 might've been handy) but those in the know say he's a near sure thing wherever he ends up.

Yeah its a bit unexciting, doesn't mean its a bad haul though

Dream draft:
Clark
Hewett
Cowan
Barnett

What we’ll pick:
Ginbey
Hewett
Allen
Jones

I’d prefer your second haul - that’d be excellent.

No way we don’t pick from outside WA though.

Can’t see us picking both Ginbey and Hewett for some reason.

Had to be a Campbell Chesser style curve ball thrown in there.

Only reason would be if we're obsessed with Ginbey (* knows why we would be), thought he'd be there at 8 and then realised he might not be.

If we did this I reckon we would take Jhye Clark at 5 and then aim to take Ginbey or Phillipou at 8. We were thinking of taking Clark when we had 2. However it’s probably not worth giving up a second rounder for Clark when you could get Hewett or Hollands at 13.

I’m not buying into the speculation that suddenly sees the draftees jumping up the board because of combine results.

Ginbey - we was the WA MVP and considered by many as top 20 prior to the combine

Allen, Jones and Smith have were considered by many as being talent likely to drop outside the top 30. Now with great combines they are all deemed as being inside the top 30. Sounds like media crap to me.

Not enough form for our Covid cohort for media to understand and I suspect clubs (hopefully especially us) not giving HUN SEN Perth Now etc not leaking

2nd haul for me too.

Although I'd gladly swap out one of Allen or Jones for Barnett.

Cowan is overrated IMO. More kickout stat padding than Hurn and Rich combined that bloke.
Pretty much bang on agree with this - For me, Cowan out, Hotton in and pick up Smith or Gilbey later it'd pop my cookies.

On the 2nd draft, I still like Jones more than Allen so Keep Jones and swap Allen the Barnett. (pick up Smith or Gilbey later)

Still ages until the draft and things have died down a bit so thought lets have draft quiz time!

  • What positions on the list do you want to see filled via the draft?

Need at least 2 mids as the priority then in order of importance
  • ruck
  • small defender
  • small forward
  • KPF
  • KPD

but those positions to be filled by selecting best available at each pick in preference to needs

  • Who is your ideal top 4 picks (be reasonable)?

8 - one of Clark, Phillipou, Mackenzie or Ginbey
12 - Hewett
20&26 - any two by taking one player from each of the following groupings
• Barnett/Keeler
• Hotton/Allan/Hustwaite/Burgiel
• Jones/Clarke

Ideal - Clark, Hewett, Barnett, Allan

  • Who do you want late in the draft?

Kaleb Smith or Jed Hagan

Gilbey also a consideration

  • Rookie draft or rerookie Winder & Trew?

Broadbent if we miss/don’t take Barnett otherwise someone like Cleaver or Baxter Philip

Trew no, Winder maybe but it’s the last spot on the list so I’d prefer this was a train on selection after looking at Narkle or Frederick as well

  • Where does Darcy Jones go pick wise?

Good chance he lasts to Fremantle’s first pick (30), if he’s still there before their second (44) which is unlikely we should see what we can use to trade up (after the board melts because we traded away 40)
  • Tsatas slips to our first pick along with Busslinger and Phillipou, who do you take?

Phillipou

  • What would make you melt/fold the club?

• Not prioritising mids. Busslinger with our first isn’t my preference but I’m ok with that provided our next 2 picks are mids
• Reaching for anyone. There are very good options at each of our picks, don’t take someone before their draft range (eg Allan at 12)
• Overlooking Hewett if he’s still there at 20 given I think we should have him locked in at 12

Feel we need KP forward and backs before a small defender.

We have 4 KP defenders and 4 kind of KP forwards. And 10 medium / small defenders. Small defenders you can land later in the draft / rookie draft.

Barnett

What we’ll pick:

Jones
My dream draft is:
9. Cameron Mackenzie
13. Mattaes Phillipou
22. Elijah Hewett/Olli Hotton
29. Henry Hustwaite/Charlie Clarke/Darcy Jones

If we took Mackenzie and Phillipou with our first two picks I probably wouldn't care who we selected for the rest of the draft.

For those who have studied the top 20 or so potential draftees more closely than me...

What 2 mids have three of these 4 attributes?

2 out of 3 of these
-Some inside grunt
-burst of speed.
-Run and carry

+

Essential
Can kick the friggin pill (if they butcher the ball they don't get taken by us, not negotiable)

This should answer who we need to take with 8 and 12.

Agree with Keys in that we need at least 2 midfielders as the priority. I think a small forward is also a must have with the loss of Rioli, Langdon (see what I did there) and the aging of Cripps. A ruck would be a nicety as would a tall forward but we should be able to fill those voids next year. Backline I believe to be set for a while and not of great concern. It gets harder at the latter picks.

Phillipou
Hewett
Burgiel/Kostanty
Szybkowski/Allen/Barnett/Jones

If we had a late 50+ pick (which we obviously don't) do you think Tom Scully would be a decent selection.
I do get a bit of Jack Williams vibes from him, however, it's like two tickets in the lottery, you double your chances.

I think Mackenzie definitely ticks the box on run and carry and kicking the football.
I also believe that he has a good burst of speed (certainly faster than Clark, Phillipou or Allen for that matter) but not to the same level as Hewett or Tsatas.

Ginbey has the first two but strong question marks on his kicking.

Phillipou has inside grunt, run and carry and is generally a decent kick.
The draw card is he's also an exceptional mark, far better than any of Mackenzie, Clark, Allen, Holland, Ginbey or Hewett are.
