Keep 3 and pick the sure thing in draiper . Has speed , skill , toughness ,leadership and work ethic .

Its a deep draft and I would rather take punts on speculative players with later picks .

Put pick 3 (draiper) in the bag who will play seniors from round 1.

Draper is my choice if we dont split.

But Id take picks 6 and 9 for 3. We arent rebuilding with one good 1st rounder per year.

Ginbey, Hewett, Reid, Lalor and Travagalia plus Lindsay over three drafts is certainly getting some "horsepower under the hood" .

What makes you think we'd take him?
I also think North has Draper ahead of him.
What makes you think North rate Draper more highly?

Draper seems like a great fit for us but would we be reaching at 3? I haven’t looked at other club boards to see where he is rated but it feels like we have discounted others (Reid, Smillie) due to being Vic Metro.

I suspect Crows would take Draper at 4 due to being local but otherwise he is rated at 7 in Twomey’s form guide and was at 9 before that. Cal is normally very accurate and I assume he takes into account which teams hold picks. Albeit this draft is particularly even at the top.

If the Crows lost pick 4 trading for Lukosious (slide to a later 1R) then perhaps we could split 3 and get Draper around that pick 7 mark if he is our intended target.

Pick 4 doest die if the Crows trade it

Would GC or whoever else it is on-traded to take him at 4? He is rated at pick 7. I suppose after an Ashcroft bid and possibly Lombard then it’s not far off the mark but on current standings our pick 3 would be a reach. The proposed split with Richmond for 6 and 9 could land him with us at pick 6.

I would say a bit of a mix between the two. He has very similar to the bont's ability to read play before it happens as well as his ability to go forward and kick goals.

He does have an interesting ball drop however and is probably a bit harder at the ball than the bont pointing more towards green.

He gets a shit load of the ball, is generally a very good user, particularly in tight and can kick goals. He's not fast but is agile enough and reads the play at an elite level. I would be lying if i didn't think he was a shot at going top 3.
Based off this I'd be pretty happy to drop back a couple spots in the draft if it meant we got Langford.

I just don't think lalor is a sure thing to make it .

Hey cousins, genuine question, interested in your response, I just posted this on the Freo board:

The complicating factor in any trade deals would be a bidding war with West Coast. It would be in both Freo and WCE's interests to be having a quiet chat in the back room of a bar about divvying up the pickings to mutual benefit. I hate to say it but it's true. It's frenemy time.

We could really hurt each other bidding up the price on Pickett/Bolton/Baker/Warner/Whoever.
Is there a unique opportunity for clever cooperation?

Like Freo did woth Kelly you mean?

What you suggest would be smart business.

Cuts both ways. The two team rivalry has hurt both clubs at the trade table.

I still have vivid memories of what you pricks did with Kelly when he requested to be traded to WC, I hold a grudge and I hope we bend you over the trade table and make you squeal!
I thought Kelly made it clear early on that he was only interested in WCE? My memory is that we at Freo were all pretty pissed at Colin Young for his part in that scenario. How did we bid up the Kelly price? (genuine quesion)

Makes sense. Out of those 4 names what is your proposal on how to divvy them up? What club gets what 2?

Doubt Pickett and Bolton take a pay cut and would still have to met their current club demands
I don't really know. I'm guessing that our 'window' (I am fully expecting sneers) is open before yours so that might be relevant and best fit for list would be another consideration.

I just don't think lalor is a sure thing to make it .

And by splitting you can both take a risk and reduce other risks. Increase your odds on oanding a gun.

Draper looks great. But he is one player. A bad injury or concussions and we have blown a draft.

Travagalia looks very, very good. Close to a sure thing 200 gamer. Could even be the best in this draft.

Lalor could be the next Dusty or a ok type like Zuurhar. Has shown he can accumulate and kick goals. Needs to build AFL endurance, has an AFL body size already.

All three players could well become the best player this draft.

Do we take one shot at it or two?

Would you be open to expanding more on the TB situation once the trades all done?

I won't be able to comment publicly on anything that happens trade wise for 24 months at all and if working in the industry for another club not at all. (It was a personal favour to do what im doing since round 10 so I sincerely doubt I do it again)

I will be able to say things like are you happy with that or similar but I can't comment on ongoing discussions and trades.

Speculating on draftees and their positions in the draft is no issue as im not involved in the recruiting team and also anything I saw now will be completely irrelevant once we have a coach.

I also cant comment on the hunt for a new senior coach other than to say a lot of work is being put in and that a lot of the candidates 'dropping out' either dont want to go through the full process or the club isn't interested in. That is all.

Remember I also may be dropping little bits of misinformation. There are a couple of posters on other boards who should know who I am and are working for clubs so there is a lot to play.

In regards to draftees Murphy Reid and Hotton don't want to leave Victoria and I don't see much difference personally between pick 1 and pick 8. Personally I don't think who I would have at 1, clubs would.

I'm pretty good at drafting flankers and talls but I do have a probably unwanted predisposition to footballers with skill and have strict guidelines in my mind of whom will make it in their preferred position and who won't. Sometimes too much exposure is worse than not enough.

Ok so this is my out loud thinking/ dream scenario.

Trade Eagles Give 3,23 (could give a f2 or f3 too) -> Tiger give 6,9,17
Trade Eagles give 17 -> Tigers give Baker
Trade Eagles give barass -> hawks give 12, 30

6,9,12,17(baker),30(peatling),59

Peatling pick 30
Baker pick 17
Graham UFA
Lindsey -12 (berry if we miss out on lindsey)
Travaglia - 9
Best mid - 6 (Draper(dream scenario),Lalor,smilie)
Champion - 59

B: yeo edwards hough
HB: ginbey mcgovern travaglia
C: draper graham lindsey
HF: hewitt waterman baker (pressure fwd)
FF: j.williams allen long

F: bwilliams reid peatling

I: hutchinson(mid) dewar(fwd) maric(util) duggan(def)

mids: kelly, chesser, johnstone, hall
rucks: flynn, livingstone, barnett
fwd : ryan(trade?), cripps(should retire), champion, a.reid, brockman
def : cole, bazzo, hunt, jamieson, burgiel(if he isnt delisted)

You look at that team and its missing an inside bull -- enter Chad warner next year.
Still short a ruck, key defender, small defender and general fwd. Use late picks/ rookie draft to fill these holes or trades for ryan/darling/petch types.

The Kelly stuff was more Geelong being jerks and VIC media pushing “well if he wants to go to WA then there’s two clubs so Cats can choose” which is logic that has never been applied in reverse. For example I haven’t heard anyone say “well there’s TEN teams in VIC so WCE can trade Barass to whichever one they want.” Freo did seem a bit insulted at the time that TK didn’t rate them. WCE publicly showed a passing interest in Jackson too but everyone knew he was going to Freo so we move on.

I'd also be avoiding FOS, I don't think he is any chance of going in the top 3.
I think he probably will, just hopefully not us.
I just haven't seen enough consistency from him this year to want him that early. I only want Jagga or Draper at pick 3. I'd 1000% take Murphy Reid there, but flight risk factor. Otherwise I'd try trade back a few.

Freo are allegedly contending while WCE won’t be for a few years. So going mostly off age demographic I wouldn’t want to use draft picks on anyone over 25.

Pickett and Warner are 23 which suits us. By the start of next season Baker will be 27 and Bolton will be 26 which is fine for Freo, they also bring some required premiership experience. Positionally all players would be good for both clubs.

The other considerations are salary cap where WCE should have a significant advantage and draft capital where Freo are currently well in front but could dwindle pretty quickly depending on which trades get done first. WCE also need at least retain some presence in the draft for our rebuild whereas Freo probably don’t care.

Players will always nominate a club which eliminates the bargaining power of the other club anyway but I don’t mind your thinking.

Not impossible.

People wont like 17 for Baker. Future 2nd and a 3rd would be preferable.

17 could land a Moraes, Cooper Hynes, Bo Allen, or a Whitlock as a CHB. Nice choices.

Draper may start as a wing but will end up an inside mid. Likely doesnt slide to 6 so Lalor is that big mid.

Young Johnston looks like a wing type and Travagalia could also play wing. And Linsday.

Baker turns 27 in January 2025.

Not 28.

Very well done. I just don't know what position of absolute need Baker fills for a decent period that justifies pick 17 in this draft I'd much rather take the draft pick or, fill that ruck hole in 2 years, with a Reidy/Knobel added to the list.

Please take this for the light hearted comment it's meant to be, and I may not be remembering correctly, but haven't you said this for the last 3 years now?
