It will be interesting to see if, given the failure again, the swans want a different look next year. Parker won't play mid again. Mills will. The big question will be whether they keep going with Adams. I can see them prioritising Sheldrick over someone they could've desperately used on GF day, yet didn't include.

Yeah, Cleary probably in front of him as well atm. Played late in the year. Plus they have pick 17 and 20 atm. Fair chance they go talls though as they have a couple of academy kids the year after

Anyone who thinks Dev would add less to our list than a pick in the 50's/60's or F4, needs to put down the crack pipe.

Interesting take on all things late picks, Dark Sharks.

I think our recent drafting with late picks, has been pretty good. :thumbsu:

2023 last pick was # 49 Harvey Johnston

2022 last pick was # 58 Noah Long :whitecheck:

2021 second last pick was # 57 Jack Williams :whitecheck:
2021 last pick was # 62 Greg Clark :heavymultiply:

Thats looking like 1 bust in Clark, 1 jury still out - but ok first year Johnston and 2 good additions to the list Williams and Long.

On reflection we haven't done too badly with latter picks in recent times.

More importantly we need players who have good foot skills and Johnston, Williams and Long tick this box.

Dev on the other hand is a bit of a butcher of the ball.

I don't want us recruiting "boomerang players" who kick the ball and then see the ball sail back over their heads as the turnover comes back ...... with interest.

The two grand finalist from yesterday, have shown all season how well they use the ball, players and recruiters need to know that ball security is job security.

So basically Darling for Dev?

A dead, can't raise his arms above his shoulders limping into retirement (excluding the GCS game) Darling, for Dev.

23yr old mature bodied midfielder from good stock, starved of AFL midfield time who consistently puts up good numbers in the VFL. Also happens to be a moron as well 🤷‍♂️

I'd make that trade and start the car tbh. Half of us are just happy to get Darling off our list at this point.

Long as the bloke plays within his limitations i don't see it as an issue. It's a moneyball pickup and the potential upside of adding him outweighs the knock on his game, which as you rightly point out, he isn't a complete player.

We need big bodied extractor/defensive mid to help out Reid. Kelly sucks and plays for himself, also can't kick a footy to save his life so by your reasoninng technically that bloke shouldn't be in our side either, whilst Yeo is getting on (in football terms) and can't be relied upon to stay on the park let alone keep leading our midfield.

Of course there's going to be late gems in the draft, and if Dev had no upside whatsoever i'd be well and truly spruiking we should just back ourselves in to identify talent in that range. But Dev himself has still barely scratched the surface of his development IMO, it's not like he's 28 and had half a dozen years of a middling AFL career. His best is yet to come still.

These are the sort of list topups you do on the run. Need to fill that age bracket on our list and he's a pretty sensible choice given what he'd actually cost. We've still got other picks to take a swing at talent late in the draft.

I don't necessarily disagree with what you are saying.
More so I was just pointing out that we haven't done too badly with late picks.

There is scope for us to do both, with top up players AND nail a few more late picks.

The genesis of our list mess is that, relatively speaking, over the years 2015 -2020 ish, we haven't nailed enough second round picks by comparison to other Clubs have.
Thats my take in part, as to why our list is so lopsided in age profile.

Yeah I don't mind it if we can pull it off, seems like a good trade to me

💕

I wouldn't give Schlong a tick either just yet. Unpopular take probably, but he's still a question mark for mine, despite us all loving him. Particularly coming back off a season ending injury.

Agree Jack Williams is a beauty (stoked with that pick at the time) and Greg Clark was a waste of time, given how we set him up to fail.

I'm all for late picks. But with Darling, Gaff, hopefully Rotham (please god), Barrass going out and at this point no mature mids coming in, we're still currently reliant on both Kelly and Yeo to lead our midfield going into 2025, who are very much unreliable.

Young Schlong has a higher footy IQ than three quarters of our list....... yeah, yeah ... I know not a high bar.

But it is true.

My season highlight in 2023 was Long sprinting through the corridor with ball in hand and burning Dumb Sheed as Sheed called out wide for a pass .... the young dude just played smart percentage football, ploughed on through the corridor and delivered to Crippa ( if my memory serves me correctly ), hit him on the chest 30 meters out, set shot and goaled.

Yep, just looked straight at Sheed 2 metres behind him and went "Nah" and hit Cripps on the tit from 50 metres away.

Sheldrick is also behind mills and probably some pick 2 genius theyll get for free through academy

If you analyse our picks over the journey apart from a few hiccups our identification of early (1R) and late (4R/rookie) talent has been very, very good compared to other clubs.

Where we’ve completely shat the bed is with 2R and 3R picks and there’s no better example of this than the 2018 draft when we took O’Neill, Foley, BWilliams and JCameron with four picks between 28 and 39 after the fleecing of the Suns.

Incidentally also picked up Harry Edwards in the rookie draft who may yet turn out to be a player.

Thes best I'll offer for Dev is a fourth round pick. Don't care if its this year or next.

Sure I can see Dev fulfilling a role for us but end of the day, we're doing Brisbane the favours, not the other way around.

It's also be inclined to say 'no thanks' if we get Graham and/or Garcia.

Let's remember the Cats got rewarded PICK 7 as an incentive for a salary dump.

Let him cook. Both Dev and/ or his manager have really blown his career prospects by keeping him at Brisbane last year.

Real value to Dev would be to get him and Garcia and reunite them with Warner.

Both him and his manager look extremely stupid, yet the bigger picture is that he'll be even cheaper to collect this year for us now than he was last year.

Basically between the two of them they've essentially wasted a whole season of Dev's AFL career.

Might as well use that to our advantage even further now though and offer up a token pick to take him off their hands. Don't need to be stubborn about it and play ducks & drakes. The reasons for adding him are still there, the only thing that's changed is the cost. Either that, or he takes dumb to another level and remains for yet another 12 months to the point he's worth a packet of cheezels and run the risk of us cooling on him completely.

Safe/smart play for all parties is he jumps over.
