  • List Manager Matt Clarke appeared on Sept 11 Gettable - Click spoiler below for summary
On the draft: "We predicted that the draft was strong, but it's probably gotten stronger during the year."

On top end of draft: "You could probably make five or six different choices and get it right."

On Pick 3: "I reckon there's five (players) around that mark."

On splitting: "I think you want to hold an early selection if you can. The depth of this group allows you to maybe have some movement there, and see what you can do to bring in more talent in the first 20-25 picks. Easier said than done, and I think most clubs would be saying the same thing. We'll see what we can do."

On Liam Baker: "He's still yet to make a decision. They're still weighing up a few things. We'd love to get Liam on board from what he offers from a talent and leadership point of view. We understand where we're at as a group, we're rebuilding our group, we need to add some guys in the middle tier to support our young group."

On Jack Graham: "We've got a number of players that we're speaking to. A bit of a wait and see on that one as well. We'll talk to a number of guys."

On Shai Bolton: "I think it will be difficult for anybody, really. He's heavily contracted and a high quality player."

On James Peatling: "He's heavily involved in a finals series at the moment so I don't want to comment too much on it, but I think there's a number of guys that have been playing really good footy this year that could suit what we do and what other clubs do. He's taken his footy to another level this year."

On Tom Barrass: "We've had an early discussion with Hawthorn about it, they understand where we're at. He's nominated Hawthorn as his ideal destination. We want what we think he's worth, as a genuine key back in the competition that can do what he can do. We're obviously mindful of getting an appropriate deal for West Coast."

On Tom Clurey: "Maybe (note: sounded very non enthused). We'd probably need some key back depth, whether that's through the draft or trade and free agency."

On Jack Darling: "We've had initial discussions with his management group about (moving). We're open to talking, as we are with all of our players, but Jack's contracted with us."

On Liam Ryan: "I expect him to be at West Coast next year, yes." (The most definitive answer of the day by a mile, a non-starter of a talking point.)

On out of contact players e.g. Rotham, Witherden, Jones: "We're still working through what it looks like from a list point of view, and how many selections we'll want to have, and players that may come in and potentially may go out. You might want to give a coach an opportunity to look at these guys."

On Harley Reid: "We've had discussions most of the year with his management group. I think it sits in a really good place. We're open to doing really whatever they want to do to be honest. We're really confident in building the right system around Harley, on and off field, to make sure that he's really comfortable, that he's going to play his best footy, and his long term future."

On Jake Waterman's new deal: "Yep, really close. We're working really closely with his management on that. I expect that we'll have something done pretty soon."

On Oscar Allen: "We've been talking with Oscar and his manager most of the year on that one. We're going through some stuff at the moment. I think we'll be ok with that one."

Clarke also in that presser more or less mocked a journo asking if Barrass worth 2 first rounders. “Do you think he’s worth two first rounders”.
Is this guy a sleeper agent or what, talks up value of incoming players, minimises value of outgoing players.
What an absolute flipping muppet

Yeah, I was shocked when he didn’t talk up Barrass’s value and instead seemed offended that the journalist asked if Barrass is worth two firsts.

Yet he agreed Baker was worth a mid teens pick, why state that publicly?

Bizarre showing from him

Lore you are fantastic 🌺

I think it's interesting you see FOS as falling so squarely into the 'safe' camp. Given he'd be being drafted almost entirely on underage-year form, and despite being fully fit later this year (aerobically speaking at least) has flopped quite a bit on output, is he really any less of a risk than the guys with injury or athleticism concerns?

Taking you on your word re Draper and Lalor, I'd say Smith is the only prospect who presents as truly safe in terms of floor.
I wouldn’t say “squarely” but he needs to be cut a lot of slack for this year. Among others, he had sequential thumb and finger injuries that meant he couldn’t even handball for months. Impeccable previous two years and the fact that he’s still being spoken about in pick 1 contention shows how highly he is regarded. Right attitude, elite player, testing was excellent but just had significant injuries at the wrong time.

If we pass up on him or Jagga by trading pick 3 I’m confident hindsight will demonstrate it was a poor decision. Happy to trade if for the right price if they are off the board.

He already said in the first interview with Twomey that they'd be expecting more than just Hawks first. Also said McQualter was 'keen' on retaining him, so putting the message out there to Hawthorn to put in a reasonable offer.

Probably sick of answering the same questions.

Jack Graham could be the Jack Redden, Rowan Jones, Tyson Stenglein etc player that helps support the more talented midfielders and does a reasonable negating job as well. Would also not be on much coin, and didn't cost a single draft pick. And hopefully joins those players with a premiership medal too...
Two or those guys came in when the team was contending and all showed their value during our respective windows. Redden was the most well rounded player as he was able win his own ball and was an offensive threat. Graham unfortunately won’t be there when we start to get good again. Don’t rate him that highly but as a free agent it’s ok as we didn’t lose any draft capital

If the gameplan mini wants to implement is reminiscent of the old Richmond gameplan, is a player like Draper or Jagga even a great fit?

A bid bodied midfield with speed and explosiveness surely would be better?

Would a guy like Allan be a better fit for the "forward at all costs" gamestyle than most of the top 6 mids?

We seem to have lost Ginbey to the backline, could Allan replace what we thought Ginbey could be?

Probably doesn't leave us with the most balanced midfield but it would be very aggressive and imposing to play against.

This thread is on endless loop hand-wringing over Baker. Remember last year when the media kept saying we'd split 1, then we didn't? Maybe this overpaying for Baker stuff might be the same thing.

Don't forget there is a market and Freo also expressed interest, helping establish his price. Whatever we pay will be reflective of that, if it ends up involving a R1 then that's the market. After that it's up to McQualter to extract that value from him when he's in the team.
Freo unallocated by them ATM, capital, is 11.

If Freo is offering 11 for Baker then happy days for Tiggers and us.

I suppose our hands were tied if Purples were prepared to offer 10.
Still don’t love it
Shouldn't make any difference if Baker has requested a trade to us. Don't think he will change his mind just help out his former team.
Also remembering that he is a reported Eagles fanatic.
If Freo aren't in the running, why should what they are offering dictate what we offer?
Different to a Yeo situation where we were the only WA team interested in him despite him being a Freo fan, or Bolton who I'm pretty sure was an Eagles supporter but doesn't care which WA team he ends up at.

I said in a post a while ago that Allan would suit a manic game style that Mini may try to roll out. So agree there.

Tigers midfield of that premiership era was pretty balanced though. They had a good spread of players that all brought different strengths to the table. All were very good contested players however when it was there turn to go.

Out: Whipping boy Jack
In: Whipping boy Dev
A whipping boy is a valuable asset. Every team needs him.
I don't get it, if he's that dumb why do we want him - besides none of the things you mentioned about him, have anything to do with his football skills? Why was WCE showing interest in him, his highlight reel was dismal...if he turned out to be a Redden, we'd be hell lucky!
For schmoes like you or I, we would see the writing on the wall and acknowledge that we would never break into a midfield as good as Brisbane's.

However he's a professional athlete. Professional athletes are competitive, and with their confidence they'll back themselves in. Especially for a side that had narrowly missed out on premiership success and (as time would prove correct) were good chances to go again the following year.

Said multiple times that he is contracted for 3 years and Hawks need to satisfy us. I reckon we will get a good bounty for him. Probably a top 10 this year .

So does anyone know where do I get a job that will fly me to Melbourne for 10 days, put me up in a hotel, pay all my meals, give me an expense allowance to entertain hookers journalists, where I get to swan around like a bigwig and do bugger all work with no stress, apart from maybe a max of 1/2 an hour on the last day, before flying home?

Asking for a friend.

Salient points:
Clurey mercifully not coming.
Dev possible.
Mentioned SSP for KPD. ?DGB.
Happy with where Harley’s contract is.
Basically said Baker is worth pick 14. Embarrassing.

It's hard cause I actually do think he'd be close to pick 14 for the right buyer - I just really don't think that buyer is us.

If it was 2018 for instance and we didn't have Duggan, then yeah, awesome. You pay a premium for players you need more immediately, we traded pick 17 for both Wellingham and Redden who helped fill roles that got us to GFs. If we were a year or two away from contending, then yeah I'd be happy with 14 for Baker.

Thing is I don't think we really are the right buyer. Hawthorn have worked out their list, found a need to be filled in Barrass and so he's worth more to them. We have Duggan, we won't be contending for a few years anyway and we need to unearth young players (or 23-24 year olds) - so pick 14 is worth more to us in that sense. From a leadership perspective I actually think he'd be good, the BnF speech thing is so overblown, but we've just brought in Graham for that and I just don't think that need sways it enough for us.

If we need leadership I'd actually rather throw our hat in the ring for Parker to play for a few years, think he'd be great to have around the list whilst not being an investment of the magnitude that we need to get on-field value out of him in 3 years. Might not want to move to WA but that general line of thinking.

Just out of curiosity and the risk of getting to to GTFO 100 times , Could i ask a taboo question ?

which out of the 2 trades would be preferred frm the below (yes neither but just for the sake of the exercise )

#3 for Baker + #11 + #32
#14 for Baker + #32

Agree with the circumstances but Redden was 23 at the time and was a very good midfielder at the time that had stagnated the last few seasons as leppitch tried to turn him from a balanced mid to a pure inside mid. Wellingham was also a few years younger but by memory he was more of an accomplished player at the Pies.

Like I mentioned a few pages back I just don’t see that as Bakers value as he is a jack of all trades but a master of none. He suits a strong team rather than a celler dweller like us.
