Luke Jackson is Luke Jackson, but a draft pick could be anything, even Luke Jackson.

* me.

But seriously, if we pick up say Wardlaw and he never reaches his peak because of his chronic hammies, then we'd be looking pretty foolish to not even entertain the prospect of say splitting pick 2 into 10 and 15, and trading one of them for Jackson. Here is a key position player that is actually realising his potential, but we want the as yet tested kid that may turn out to be a bust (even if it's more probable than not that he will succeed).

As I said before, however, still think Freo want him more than us and the Lobb exit will help them make a deal, probably via a three way.
Melbourne surely ask for more than pick 10 though right?
And is he worth the hit to our salary cap? Not too sure, he's kind of in-between being a ruckman/forward/midfielder, is he ever going to be elite in any of those areas? We'd really want to be sure to justify trading away what we'd have to, to get him and what we'd be paying him.

So in summary:

Luke Jackson is Luke Jackson :thumbsu:
Midfielder might fail but it's more probable he will succeed :thumbsu:
Freo will probably get Jackson, leaving us with ... a midfielder most likely to succeed :thumbsu:

Freo overspend on Jackson because we enter a bidding war, causing them to plummet down the ladder :thumbsu:
We still get pick 2 and he becomes the next Chris Judd :thumbsu:
Bailey Williams becomes generational ruck :thumbsu:

Sam Edmunds running with the Georgiardes to the Eagles story this morning. Port are apparently concerned at the amount of work we have put into him and are thinking he might be on the way out even though contracted for next year.
Id happily do a straight swap for rioli

I dont pay too much attention to the draft, but apparently all the top end picks are Victorian.

I dont want us drafting some vic metro mummas boy with pick 2 for him to leave after 2 years because hes playing WAFL as shuey, gaff, redden etc played on in 2024.

Maybe its worth exploring trading pick 2 for jackson, but gee paying 1mill a year is VERY much overs. If it was 700k for 4 years you could stomach that.

Who would you rather have?

Petracca/Oliver or Jackson?

I love rucks being a very crap one running around in masters footy myself but the fact remains unless they are the very best (Nic Nat / Gawn / Cox / Sandi) levels the chances are a top midfielder is more impactful.

If we can’t get a top level mid with pick 2 we should give the game away.

I wouldn't be shocked if the Eagles offered pick 2 (3) or even our next years first. The club is run by arrogant people who would gamble on the club finishing better next season with a easier draw and a Luke Jackson that the pick would be closer to 10 than 1.

800 000 a year for 5 years is cheap , after
the AFL cap increasing 800 000 in 5 years might be like 600 000 now

On the plus side, we've all stopped talking about Sharp at least.

Sharp'll end up being the Lee Carvalhos Putting Challenge we deserve.

3rd rounder.

Bailey Williams becomes generational ruck :thumbsu:
Happy Eddie Murphy GIF by Laff

Rhys Stanley, Oscar Mcinerney, Tom Hickey or Darcy Cameron will be this year's premiership ruckman

They certainly aren't generational rucks but none of them are just lumbering dinosaurs that their sides plonk in the middle to make a contest. Well, maybe just Darcy Cameron...

Gawn last year was a premiership ruckman and he is pretty good ngl. Nankervis is made fun of but he is more than serviceable too and has now won multiple premierships. Anyway, don't think we're going to get Luke Jackson anyway, as Miguel said his value to Melbourne and the value to us is miles apart and I don't think we can meet halfway.

Max Gawn, Brodie Grundy, Nic Nat have all either won recent flags or played in a grand final. Yes, you don’t need a star ruck if you can compensate in other areas, the ruck is only one position on the ground amongst 18 after all. The point being you need A grade players capable of influencing matches spread across the park if you want to go far. If one of those spots where we happen to get an edge is the ruck with Jackson in the team, why not?

Weve invested pick 2 on a ruck before, which turned out pretty good for us.

Where does drafting a ruck fit on the Chump importance/worth scale?

I know picks 1-5 to go on balanced bulls, and 12-17 should go on KPP, but what about a possible multi-position quality tall like Jackson? Is he in the 6-11 pick range? In that case would it be shrewd to trade pick 2 for a pick 6-11 (no splitting) to use on Jackson so his corresponding draft pick currency is more equal to his talent via position making it a successful recruitment?

So Culley is a mummas boy?

It needs to at least be something plausible, nobody is going to believe that for a second

Agreed. Bear in mind, the comedy often gets confused on this board if it’s too subtle

Jackson to me is an awesome second ruck. Not big enough to take a constant pounding in the ruck as number 1, but can come in and turn games in bursts, then if want to play your no. 1 ruck as a defensive ruck can have him ruck the front half, play through the midfield, and hurt up forward. He needs to improve as a forward.

Would work great with Darcy. If we could have got a player like him to partner with Nic Nat when cox retired would have been perfect.

Not where we are at now though.
Sounds like he doesn’t want to be a pure ruck and Freo have pitched to him the very idea of what he envisions to be
