Had another chat with the same State WA coach from last time:

  • really rates Allan: incredible athlete, great character, insane work ethic, scope to move into an inside role not just outside, high ceiling. Aka not vanilla.
  • Ginbey will definitely get picked by us at 8, if available, assuming no sliders.
  • still thinks Hewett is not worth drafting based on character. Does rate his explosiveness, dual-sidedness, goal kicking prowess, etc. Top 10 on talent.
  • Broadbent’s shin splints were not the sole reason for his drop in performance, really rates himself and got ahead of himself assuming he’ll get drafted without putting the work in.
  • Freo will pick up a ruckman, most likely local boy Free/Freed (spelling?)
  • recruiters are currently using Hudl and Sportscode for drafting analyses
  • Edwards in next year’s draft crop a top 10 lock at this stage
  • Gilbey will get drafted, still rates him. Describes him as ‘smooth as silk’ and compares him to Hayden young from Freo.
  • Eagles have 3 WA recruiters (including Toddy Nesbit) based over here, plus ROB et al obviously over in Vic. Each comes up with their own top 20 lists, then will come together and fuse them into one top 20 list (plus ‘the rest’/needs based list for later picks) they go by on the night. This ‘fusion’ meeting happening at the end of the week.
  • Eagles will consider further trading into next year, if a suitable offer comes our way. Coach really rates next years crop highly.

Will be catching up again with him on Monday/first round draft day.

Is Jefferson actually good, or just named around there by default given he's the second ranked key forward?

Looks like averaged less than 10 touches a game for Oakleigh, and 2.2 goals. Doesn't scream pick me, given neither a high possession winner or a high goal kicker.
I still reckon we are looking at him for our 3rd pick should he slide.

  • I hate this. Who wasn't a dickhead as a 17yo?

Toby green anyone? Would love him in our forward line.

Some remain idiots, de goey anyone.

Give the kid a chance, and back out coaches and people surrounding him.

Genuinely curious why there's such a knock on Hewett's character.

I’m not sure whether people are just making things up, but I know he has moved school once or twice, so people speculated he was quietly expelled due to bullying / harassing girls

I think it’s very dangerous to say that’s true with absolutely zero proof other than someone saying it on Reddit but yeah, who knows

JD had massive behavioural concerns prior to prior to being drafted and slid massively. Other than the vaccine fiasco, been a model citizen the whole time.

Agree. Plus we have been dealing with Rioli and Ryan the last several years this guy will probably be easy work compared to them.
Draft him get a good person mentoring him and let his natural ability do the rest.

My information comes from a coach in the WA system not reddit.

He’s got two major issues, one you have highlighted partially.

He hopefully grows out of it and matures into a fine young man, like Darling (for the most part) for example.

Based on his talent, I’d like us to give him a go, but some clubs won’t touch him.

I wish him only success.

There seem to be a lot of kids available at our picks that don't appear to have the same issues.

Like it or not, evaluating draftees as people and not just talent is part of the process. If we skip Hewett based on this then so be it. Hardly any of us have the full story so we're all just guessing anyway.

Ginbey
Hewitt
Cowen
Gilbey

Now that's a draft haul to stop the melts

Looking at that, with basically no knowledge of Cowen and Gilbey, I'm not sure whether we'd want to pass on Hotton and Hustlehwaite who i do like, and who go right behind Cowen and Gilbey in that mock.

Not sure about that.

The picks in isolation are ok ish, but as a collective they don't really address our most pressing need needs.

Ginbey a HBF with midfield potential ( where have I heard that before ) at the next level, if he can become a mid, then a good pick, so jury is out on that one. ❓
Hewett a genuine midfielder. :whitecheck:
Cowan a HBF. ❎
Gilbey a HBF. ❎

I think that Gilbey is a very injury prone player and as much as I like he foot skills I think there is better value at that pick.

Now if one of either Gilbey or Cowan was replaced with someone like Szybkowski, Hustwaite, Hotton or Bergiel that would be a much better mix.

At worst that haul gives us 3 HBF and 1 genuine midfielder, I will be disappointed if we don't come away with 2 genuine midfielders from this draft cohort.

As has been alluded to on numerous occasions in debate on Ginbey previously.... if he can transition into a serviceable midfielder, then he warrants pick 8/9, however if he cant make that transition, then we effectively have used our best draft pick in over a decade on another Duggan ...... I am not sure that will thrill the masses.

Conversely IF Ginbey can make the transition to becoming an inside bull midfielder, then the Ginbey/Hewett pairing will look like an astute piece of drafting.

So as with all drafting, its merit will be answered in terms of success, in the fulness of time.

Agree. Could live with Ginbey and Hewitt.

See a more balanced approach after those picks and rather than two half backers I’d think Keeler and Barnett would be looked at along with like you say a Burgiel or Hotton.

I think if we wanted a half back Ryan looks good or trade back in for Smith and use 5 picks.

Ginbey (def inside mid)
Hewitt (balanced mid)
Hotton (fwd mid)
Barnett/Keeler (ruck key position)
Smith (running half back)

Would be a good balance.
