The fact we were heavily linked to talls with our 2nd first rounder seems like a massive decoy so no one would jump ahead and take Hewett .

Essendon were very keen to jump ahead of our 3rd pick a snag Hewett before us . Pretty sure they had a deal already done with Sydney that fell through .

By the look of it , jack Williams was having a great preseason before his punctured lung . Think he will go alright. Bit of Quinton Lynch about him . Once jack fills out he is going to be hard to beat 1 on 1 .
Maybe, but I think we'll grab a couple of talls in the draft. One forward, one back

Usually I'm pretty much on the mids, mids and more mids bandwagon - and if there's a good one with our first pick this year and no talls that are better value I'd still be keen.

But second round onwards think we definitely need a key forward and key back. We've finally (at least seemingly) got a few blue chip mid draftees and we wouldn't want them to get too much older than the KPPs they'll be playing with otherwise they'll peak at the wrong times (eg the current Bulldogs key forwards being a while away from making the best use of Bont/Macrae).

In terms of true KPPs and not rucks - by the time Ginbey and Hewitt are 23 we'll likely have:

Oscar peaking, excellent
JWilliams/Waterman possibly established, possibly not
Barrass maybe still in good form, possibly not
HEdwards hopefully established but again possibly not

Think we definitely need to add to that list and we definitely should do it soon - good chance they won't have huge impact before they're 23-24 so timing is vital.

We're also very good at drafting and developing talls with picks outside the 1st round and have a poor track record with mids outside there as well so feels like the best investment for us. Mids can also come in and impact earlier so in list build terms we could afford to focus on them in later drafts. Same with a small forward - while I'd love another good one or two (and if we get a chance, great) I don't think the investment necessarily has to start as early.

We always do grab talls especially defenders in the 30 to 45 range .

Its a matter of will we draft a key forward with our 1st rounder or go mids again

Bazzo !

We might need to given Barnett is only quality option we have.
Barnett looks to be both a KPF and ruck

I have no problems looking at Edwards but not with a top 10 pick ( might change later this year)

There will be some great options in the top 6 picks and I predict a top 6 pick this year.

Keep playing Gaff as centre clearances coupled with NicNat only playing 10 games and you probably lock in a top 4 pick. That combo looks like we will not be great at contested football.

Not convinced from Friday that our exit from defence will be that great in 2023.

We will be much better in 2023 but it will be us starting to close the gap so 5 wins would be my prediction. And a % closer to 85%.

NicNat, Allen, Brander, Darling, Lycett, Emac, Brown were all taken inside that range!!!! Not sure your generalisation is even close to correct

I believe there will be very good mids available with both our R2 picks in this years draft.

Few current and future self-funded retirees on this thread at the mo.

OK, I'll bite. Obviously missed something but...

Why say this?
Why does it matter?
Why was Col Sanders wrong?

And yes, 20 years ago I couldn't spell self funded retiree, now I is one.

Yeah, that was my thought on Barnett. I think you could play both he and Edwards together, swapping between ruck and 3rd fwd.

I agree, I wouldn't take him with our first pick more if we got another 2nd first from say GC. Rucks rarely go in the top 10 anyway.

If we were in range to get Curtin, I'd 100% take him as it stands*! But if he were gone, I wouldn't be necessarily going for the next key position player. I think our stocks are pretty good in both forward and defence - J.Williams looks like he's developing which is great, Jamieson is a fwd/ruck and then Oscar who's not that old yet. Other end Harry and Bazzo both looking promising.
I'd still go best talent available at where our pick ends up.

*A lot of water to go under the bridge, haven't even started the u19 season so much can change.

Not to be taken seriously. Just a newly emerging boardism that I'm perpetuating for my own amusement.

170cm small forward. **** even Eddie Betts is 174cm. He would have to scream superstar, score 50+ goals for the year through APS and TAC and then 15+ goals in the champs to be considered for a top 10 pick. Even then he'd still almost certainly go pick 10+ and he'd have to be 100% physically and mentally ready to go round 1.

You'd need a team close to a premiership but crying out for a small forward to end up with that sort of pick to do it. Kosi Pickett went at pick 12 ffs and it certainly didn't look like the loaded draft we're looking at this year.

Brent Harvey like

Or do we target KP forwards in trades or a FA at the end of 2023 or 2024?

Logan McDonald
Naughton RFA
Georgiades
Van Rooyen (getting big raps at Melbourne at 19)

Then there is Tim English RFA in 2024 to team up with Barnett?

To shoot back up the ladder a free agent would be a godsend end of 2024. And we will have the cash.

Imagine OA and Naughton as fwd target's!
