Scuse me?

Thing about Rioli is he is a natural footballer with absolute forward goal sense. He can kick goals out of nothing, make other shots on goal happen out of nothing.

Finding players like that is harder than it looks, him leaving will be a void we won't be able to fill for some time. Our small forward stocks are in absolute dire straights now IMO.

Langdon and Petrucelle aren't AFL standard, so who else is there?

I like Darcy Jones as much as anyone, but he is an undersized MIDFIELDER, not a forward. Stick him down there and we fall into the same bullshit trap we have done a dozen times over before with Hams, Strijk, Winder, Partington etc etc.

If we want to find a suitable replacement for Rioli, it'll take some time. Doubt it'll be in this draft. Jones might have to go back to playing forward out of necessity.

Good thing we're s**t and not contending for anything.

Not if we're going into next years draft with multiple first rounders. Could pick up 2 of Moir, Delean, Tholstrup by trading out 2024 first into next years draft. I have all 3 of those players depending on next years development between pick 7-15.

Kobe Ryan is better all over the ground than Darcy Jones, has an inside game, is a tackling beast and almost 10cm taller. Knows where the goals are too.

Darcy Jones imo is a third round onwards pick and certainly doesn't have the class of Rioli.

In regards to HB's I think Chesser and Hough will be there in the future. Hough to me the more likely to surprise and become a midfielder long term but we're talking 4 years away imo at least and probably another 2 if he is going to be a leader in that midfield rotation.

AA and the most highly valued winger at one time
If he'd signed at North we'd have ended up with a 1st round compo pick which would have slotted in after the pick we traded to Gold Coast for future picks in 2017, and before the Lycett compo which we traded to Gold Coast for a couple of second rounders. I think we'd probably have traded the Gaff compo for future picks as well looking at our draft strategy at the time. Or it might've helped us secure Kelly without the 2019 king's random.

Yawn!:anguished::disappointed:

This get rolled out every 5 pages.

I willbet a body part we wont draft a half back with our first pick. Why? Because we finally have a top 10 pick.

I hope you are right - we just seem cemented in game plan and drafting strategy as if we obstinately refuse to accept that tactics need to change.

Not exactly a great return for $1.3m in salary
If Dusty never plays another game and still gets paid the next two years, they’ve still got more than a fair return

They don’t win 3 flags without Martin

Anyone know why Riley Collier Dawkins can’t get a game at Richmond?

Out of contract, was pretty highly rated in his draft year.

Doesn't fit the No Double Barrels policy at Richmond, after getting rid of Callum Coleman-Jones and Derek Eggmolesse-Smith last offseason.

It's a great policy that I believe all clubs should implement. SPS on verrrrrrry thin ice.

Funnily enough SPS is the only double-barreled player we’ve ever had

(Not including Zac Giles-Langdon who doesn’t use the Giles part, or Jarrad Oakley-Nicholls who didn’t end up playing a game)

Wasn’t commenting on past performance
Yeah I get that. Dusty for 2023/24 at a $1m plus a year isn’t a good return as you say

My point is that those two years can effectively be viewed as reward for past performance

It also doesn’t appear to be limiting their ability to attract talent to the club either

You are way off with the bolded part IMO.

So DS what is the same about these three players?

They are all 175cm tall. Yep, same height, surprise, surprise.

And they are natural footballers who can find it, use it better than most and kick goals.

The closest player to Rioli this draft is Darcy Jones. And he just so happens to be rated pretty close to the pick we should get for Jnr. 27-30.

Didn't Carlton desperately trade up for Liam Stocker?
Silgvani is pretty crap

Two look like athletes the third suffers the munchies..

Obeanie1 do i really need to point out that Bolton and Rioli are small forwards whilst reminding you Darcy Jones is an undersized midfielder again? 🤦‍♂️

Why are you flagging their height like that means anything? Liam Baker is 173cm and plays in the backline.. is that also relevant?

You don't need to tell me Jones is a talented player, or draftable, I know that. It's not something I'm debating. Rioli is a specialist small forward, it's his bread and butter. He doesn't play midfield (save the odd pinch hit), he stays forward, he crumbs packs, he kicks goals. He's done it for years and is a natural.

Jones is running around in the midfield. Yes he can push forward and hit the scoreboard occasionally, but he isn't a specialist small forward. You're falling into the same trap Simpson has before of trying to turn midfielders into small forwards. Given our success rate for attempting that, I for one want us to identify an actual small forward to replace Rioli, not a midfielder.

Whilst Jones might be worth the punt as an option, he's not the answer I'd be banking on.

Doesn't seem to be able to make the step up from VFL to AFL. I, like a lot of others on our board, had high hopes for him early on but he looks like being a bust. Don't think he will be on our list for much longer. He is an inside mid who can't get a game when we had Lambert retire, Prestia constantly injured and Cotchin managed every three or four games. There has been a spot for him there to take but unfortunately he's not good enough. If West Coast want him it would only cost a token draft pick.
