Its such a west coast thing to go after English.

We tried and failed due to a technicality to get English registered for the draft by getting him to play 1 colts game but due to having the wrong address on his application he was ineligible.

12 months later he played in the state u18s and was drafted in the first round .

West coast loves a player they rated and got away

It makes me sense to me than going "we thought this player was no good but they're going well in another clubs system"

English was from Corrigin (or there abouts) which is tied to South Freo. He was boarding and playing football for CCGS and Claremont tried to get a couple of games into him post PSA season. Since he had played football as a junior for his country side, the registration for Claremont was refected. Hence he was delayed a year in getting drafted

I was not aware that West Coast stuffed it up and I have no idea why our club would gain in registering him. We had no rights or academy access to him. We took Venables at 13 and English went at 19 so we could of picked him

In 2015, we had already traded for Redden and lost our first rounder hence a weaker draft hand.

What part are you claiming our club screwed up?

So should we start looking at who's on the FA market?

We all know 2025 was going to be when our cap squeeze isnt so bad but it isnt beyond the realms of possibility that Shuey retires because of soft tissue injuries and JD gets sacked or traded (can dream).

Those two would be close to $1.5m unexpected cap space suddenly becomes available. Plus Sheppard's as well.

So up to $1.8 or $1.9m of cap space we simply didnt expect to be available in 2023. If JD is on reduced pay for 2022 and we bank it we can add another $400k as a sign up fee.

Time to go shopping?

Luke Jackson is the best WA player ooc this year. Even if Bailey Williams has a big year and Strnadica proves serviceable I’d still be going after him.

Logan McDonald next on the hit list. With Kennedy and Darling ending up there’s a sizeable hole here to fill. It’ll be interesting to see how Keitel transitions and Waterman goes playing a more permanent forward role this year, but even if they go alright we’re still going to need another key forward on the list.

Don’t want to be throwing big money at English if he has a season similar to last year. Ok forward, average ruck - meh. We’ve got Williams who can do that job.

I'd give up two first rounder's for Luke Jackson.

What if both those first rounders were top 6?
Of course that would be reassessed if we really finished bottom 4 or so this year, but think we'll be around 8th again, given that's where we were last year with a terrible year with injuries. Take the chance of being ok next year as well.

Still, don't see it happening. Don't think he's coming back.

Who are you, Kane Cornes?
Obviously...

Seriously though, Melbourne will want the world for Jackson and giving away possibly two top ten picks and a large chunk of salary cap for a ruck/fwd isn't smart imo.

We need to strengthen and regenerate the midfield and the most talented and complete midfielders are usually first rounders.

Would be difficult to pry a key asset from a premiership team. Especially a young bloke who is looking down the barrel of the possibility at multiple flags and getting swept up in it all with his senior team mates.

Lycett left but he was a mature player who saw it as an opportunity to have his cake and eat it too.

Buddy left for a godfather deal.

It doesn't happen often.

Tim English is like Luke Jackson from Wish

Equally, might be easier to pry a player loose who has already achieved the singular goal all players are chasing.

I feel as though the ones easiest pried away are those who have played a lot of footy and only likely to get one more big contract.

LJ has 15 years ahead of him, and being a Melbourne club, a good chance of bagging a few more flags if the boys are committed.

If they strike out in the next 3 seasons he might be more open to a move, although if Max is Gawn by then he could be the main man.
