Not sure we ever drafted Oscar Allen to be a midfielder...
To be fair to DS I do recall that Oscar had a colts game at West Perth late in the season where he played on ball and had 30 touches and 10 tackles or something.

A few mentions of this game were made on this board after we picked him up. There were suggestions that he might be too short for KPF at AFL level at the 191cm he was listed at but that would make him perfect BBIMWBLF size.

Knightmare also had chesser falling out of his power rankings entirely after not being impressed with him this year i believe so hopefully he's wrong on him

In fairness there's been very little to judge him on compared with the others who have a good body of work to dissect and rate.

Just on the game plan I expect serious changes, you could see us trying to implement a faster run and gun style for games or parts of games in the second half of the year.

It seemed to work later in games and later in quarters but we got destroyed at the start of games when we went with it. Dockers game as an example if people want to re-watch and see.

What happened to all the Pies and Dogs picks for matching bids? I thought our picks at 60 and 77 were supposed to come right in or something?

And after the lightning break in the Melbourne game. Some of the most entertaining footy we've played for 2+ years

Yesterday they were 67 and 82 so they’ve come in a bit. Then Saints and Giants will have to match bids on Owens, Windhager and Fahey, and teams will start to pass.

The problem is we refused to play less talls in the team (even when the forecast was heavy rain), not play zone defence, try and tackle or put pressure on the opposition ball carrier, etc.

I reckon our issue is we heavily drafted talls and good kicks based on the game style that got us the 2018 Premiership. But that game style is as dead as that bird in the Monty Python sketch which was clear before last season started (see the Essendon Thursday July game in 2018 to show a clear pointer of where the game was headed).

Unfortunately we are now struggling with that top heavy squad. Speed in itself isn't the panacea... it is the squad makeup and the game plan.

Zoning off, trying to pick off the bombed ball that isn't bombed any more as the man on the mark isn't able to put pressure on the kicker and our want to kick precisely & slowly when we have the ball.

We have point blank refused to change the game plan the last two seasons and our drafting tactics has not given us any sign that we intend on changing it.

I hope the picks today aren't talls & more half back flankers because that will scream to us that we intend on more of the same in 2022 & onwards.

I would agree our over focus on drafting and playing tall has limited the style we play.

I would say the way we defend is the biggest issue. Last two season forward half pressure has been way below the standard needed. Then we set up for the long kick into our defensive 50 and the opposition have learned to run around the statue on the mark and hit up shorter lower kicks our defenders don't defend against.

So the entire defensive mechanism and set up is broken which then places pressure on us to retain the ball when we get it.....aka play slow kick, mark footy. We are too scared to go fast because if we turn it over we are stuffed.

We fix the defensive set ups and mindset both forward and down back we can then start rebounding faster and taking risks. Actually get the ball quickly to our dangerous forwards.

Surely number one change is ditch the zoning/guarding turf plan & go man-on-man esp through the midfield. To do this we have to have fewer talls on the field.

What did Lewis Jetta average?

Well look at that shall we!!!!!!!!!!!!!:oops:;)

Highest disposal average was 17.1 in 2014.

Would you describe Jetta as a decent outside mid / creative half back?

LOL and guess when Jetta was drafted?

I'm sure there's others who haven't played much this year who havent fallen so far

How do you.know?

I'm basing it on the fact that no other draft boards were even talking about him in the first round. Granted I don't read everything and am not a recruiter but I feel would could have extracted more value from the down grade

Got it. You refuse to acknowledge that Chesser can play on the wing as it doesn't suit your argument.

He's described as a medium outside mid / half back. Most players in the modern game need to be versatile and the difference between halfback / wing isn't a lot.

AFL draft 2021: Campbell Chesser huge jumper, reactions, social media, West Coast Eagles Pick 14, bolter (foxsports.com.au)

“He was joint captain with Ben Hobbs of that Victorian Country side. He’s a bit like a Paul Seedsman, he’s an outside runner, whether it’s on the wing or half back, he’ll break the lines over there on that fast track in the west.”

North Melbourne great David King thinks West Coast may have gotten a steal in Chesser.

“Massive penetration with everything this guy does. I think it’s a good selection for Adam Simpson and his crew, they knew he’d still be there, that’s why they slid back to Pick 14,” he said.

“Everything he does has yardage and metreage and that’s what they need.”

I think he played 3 games this year and had 14 IS50”s he’s very attacking if he is a hbflanker ..😉

Jetta couldnt cut it? LOL.

I'll take a two times premiership wing / HFF / HBF with that skill set any day.

Because we sure dont have it now do we?

I'll take 17 Jetta possessions over 30 Gaff possessions every day. Impact per possession way better than Gaff. Team moves forward fast, not sideways slowly.

I think like all, I was very disappointed by not picking up an inside mid. Especially after Hawks picked Ward mean't we'd get at least 1 of those players.

Props to the club for realising the player that Port/Essendon wanted and for gaining a valuable 2nd rounder.

However on reflection a large problem of our game last year was largely waited by having at times up to 8 of our best team out of action...you could probably argue 8 out of our best 10. We have some very good inside players if all fit...Shuey Yeo and Redden. What we don't have is some players who can break lines. And to break lines you either need great vision with foot skills...Willy, Jets, Witherden. And then pace as another option and here I struggle to find many players who can play midfield with speed. Hopefully SSP and now Chesser address this problem.

The problem as I see it and why I think we needed the pure inside player is that Shuey and Redden are getting older.

On to our pick. Not sure I fully understand the fact that he's an outside, hbf with poor tackling etc pov and then the same people argue against the fact that he's only played 6 games in two years and chosen as a 16 year old AA pov.
To me the difference in players entering colts as a 16 year old and the difference in roles that they can play at the end of colts and the level at what they improve in areas is massive. The kid has good foot skills, good vision, likes to break lines and he's now 186cm and already AFL body shape.
I know for a fact that scouts source a lot of information from a wide and varied source and that ROB and his team would of got a lot of the data they wanted.
So who knows what we have as an 18yr old but I bet they have a good idea.

I'm hoping that we can still try to gain a pure inside mid like Clark
