AFLW 2024 - Round 10 - Chat, game threads, injury lists, team lineups and more.
So we have something like picks 33, 51 and 53 for the draft. We also have all of our 2021 picks in tact.
What we know is as follows
- 1010 list management will be tough with clubs needing to cut harder with list sizes expected top be 10% lower
- clubs believe this year is compromised with so many academy prospects
- Adelaide, Norf, Geelong and Brisbane have multiple 1st round picks
- there are a great crop of talls expected to go in the 1st round (WA over represented)
- West Coast desperately need a better crop of midfielders coming through
One option - package up next years first rounder and pick 51 to Geelong for their pick 11 (or whatever it turns into - likely a mid teens). If not Geelong, there will be others interested at the 9 to 12 pick range.
Go to the draft with pick 11 and get the best inside midfielder available (expecting a crop of KPP to come off early) - one of O'Driscoll, Poulter, Perkins, Macrae, Powell, Ginnivan and then go for best available at 33 and 53.
In other words, use the negativity on the draft to our advantage. Use the fact that we do not need KPP to get us to the place in the draft that is sweet for us.
If it's not Geelong, then Carlton are holding 8, Doggies are holding 10, Norf 9, etc. Doggies will need points this year so it may even suit for a 3 way with the Doggies and a club wanting our 1st next year.
I believe the sweet spot for us will be in this 10 to 18 draft range to get the mids - no reason to think we cannot get something.
There will be clubs making hard list management calls. I think we have enough players we can shed without it hurting our list.
As others have stated, de-list probables are:
Retire - 3 - Venables, Jetta and Schofield
Cut - 4 - Vardy, Rioli, Treacy, Reid, Watson
(Remember we have 1 extra on the list with Jones added as cover for season over Venables)
We lose 8, draft 3 and we are down the required number to get 3 players with pick 11 (or what we can negotiate), 33 and 53.
If we want to, I would be OK drafting Alex Waterman as a better depth option as a smaller player up front. I am not sure what the otehr clubs will say to a sympathetic Father/Son that is a speculative return from Glandular Fever. I would say that he would be cheap as with a wink and nudge. If so, then next year's first plus 51 and 53 may get us a single digit number (which will end up an early teens)
I am also thinking Shuey would be OK to spend more time as a forward in 2021 to look after his hammies.
Mind you all this might be futile if The Hammer and Fingers Ainsworth start to blitz it in the coming weeks
Not true if we trade back into this year's first round.Read the second paragraph"Having now gone three seasons without a first-round pick, the Eagles will be barred from sending their 2021 first-round pick to any club in a trade deal. "
Hands tied: Why two big Vic clubs can't trade first pick
The clubs will both need to take a first-round pick to this year's NAB AFL Draft under League ruleswww.afl.com.au

Waterman would be a better option than Reid.
Definitely think pick 11 would get you a O'Driscoll, Trew, Macrae or Perkins. I really like O'Driscoll, really impacts the play as an inside mid. His kicking isn't amazing, but definitely better than Devon Robertson. So we have something like picks 33, 51 and 53 for the draft. We also have all of our 2021 picks in tact.

Lol almost everyone here wanted us to draft him in 2017, but unfortunately he was taken in the top 10.View attachment 958348
Hunter Clark should be a nice addition to the team
Coniglio been dropped by GWS. Just saying.
The thought crossed my mind this morning.
Cogs has been under so much pressure at GWS since the game against Brisbane, before they even travelled to hub it up in Perth. First year captain in possibly the worst possible circumstances (COVID), trying to lead an under pressure club, led by an under pressure coach, to their first flag.
There is no way he could ever play for us. He is on 7 million over 7 years, and we can't even trade our future first due to rules around how many first round picks you need to use over any four year period.
Our 2 rounder this year and future 2nd for Cogs on 400KPA?
dreaming.
......unless we use Brander as trade bait? They were into him and were extremely disappointed that a rule change meant he was no longer part of their academy in his draft year.
I just hope that they give Mitch Star Wars Oneill anlther year. He came back in excellent conditioning after being away from the club with his back injury.
This shows great determination and work ethic. Im quietly optimistic that he will be gem.
On another note if we trade up the draft board, ODriscoll, Trew or Carroll please...

Not compulsory but you can almost guarantee we'll do something stupid and take one of them.
Would be more than happy to give Waterman another shot, I'd also be keen on leaving the spot free for the mid-season draft and take someone then based on our list needs.
Must be on the outer with someone/some people. He was captain and is Melbourne through and through. And next seasons mid season draft could have a few unlucky ex AFL players available.
Saw that Viney at Melbourne is considering options. Free agent.
That surprised me.
Probably recognised how shit his coach isMust be on the outer with someone/some people. He was captain and is Melbourne through and through.
