It's been a long day, and I'm missing the cryptic point here.

Are you saying Tex will be the only chance to pull him into line; or that even Tex is sick of his shit?
Probably that Tex had one or two issues off field, and is now captain?? Maybe???

I'm hoping Pyke brings some persona to the club because I still keep recalling the way Walsh stepped in and with so much personal identity power, just assumed the mantle of dragging the AFC up to where it belongs.
From what I've seen he doesn't have that charisma. There's a lot of debate about charisma and it's importance in leadership and there are many examples of successful leaders for both sides.

In a coaching role (or any key leadership role) the person needs to be able to create a great vision and get people to buy into it 100% and understand the role they play in making that vision a reality. Walsh would have done that with a lot of power and charisma. Pyke looks like he'll do that differently. I'm sure he's got a strong vision and he'll make sure it's taught to the players so they understand it. It will take time to do that, and for the players to buy it. A charismatic person can sell it but the buy in can quickly fade if it's not realistic, pragmatic or working immediately. I think Walsh understood that, that emotion didn't last and I think he used his charisma and energy differently. A non charismatic person might not be able to sell it so the hairs on the back of your neck stand up but they'll still get buy in by talking to individuals and personalising it. I think the Sando spike was riding on buy in from a lot of charisma and emotion. Then it bombed.

It's the "creating a great vision" part that I'm not sure we'll get back. The footy brain of Walsh was immense, lost forever. Regardless, I don't want to start comparing Pyke to what we had, he's Don Pyke not Phil Walsh.

I don't think Pyke will be exciting in press conferences either, which is less exciting for us, but I'd rather a premiership than excitement at press conferences.

Mad Mick and Crazy Vossy had exciting press conferences. It's probably the hardest part of the job, especially after a loss. A coach needs to learn to enjoy them. Smacking down Rucci is one way to relieve the pressure. Bringing food is another. We probably won't hear about van Gogh again but the odd metaphor goes a long way.

The pioneer of Pyke's Penetrating Gaze, known to pulverise the opposition coach on game day - as previewed in the AFC promos.

The portrayal of Pyke's Penetrating Gaze is somewhat perplexing. I'm presuming it's not post Patty posturising but more a personal portrayal of perennial power being a prelude to propelling the players to a premiership.

Longmire has been pretty average for Sydney really imo. Bit like Scott where he won a premiership but it was more off the back of Roo's work. Team has been below par the past couple of seasons (even though they made the grand final last year, they played terribly) given where they should be.

Some injuries to important players hasn't exactly helped though.

ok

Maybe you should give me an infraction for being a lier?

Maybe you should give me ab infraction for wasting your precious time reading my horrible lies?

maybe you should do some investigating and find out Luke Lowden has an ego the size of Uluru?

Maybe you shpuld read what I wrote, he was ok and then when he started playing?

Maybe you should be careful Mr Moderator. You don't know what you are talking about from Kings Cross in Sydney.

Maybe Luke Lowden should do some mirror looking and realise that he has had like 2 games of AFL in 6 years.

Our last back up Ruckman, Angus Graham, was a big fan of mirror watching......

John Longmire has virtually no media presence at all and gets the job done.

I would've said he's massively underachieved to be honest.
He's had a top 2 side 4 years running and won 1 premiership.

Could go down as one of the most overrated coaches of all time still.

I tend to think he is a better coach than Roos.

We are seeing right now how "good" Roos is at Melbourne.

I have a feeling that a lot of people will be a bit dissappointed by his media work. Tough gig to follow Walshy! But I have faith he will be a good coach. Just win games pykey!

I remember people saying the same about Walshy, however he evolved quickly in that space..

At the end of then day it's about winning football games and not about media ratings

The latter. The last DUI was received badly. The leadership team, including his mate Tex, were FILTHY.
I doubt he'll be delisted but he will need a good year next year.

Killing off the so called bloods' culture with the cola signings of tippett & buddy was the beginning of the end imo.

This is an interesting post.

Walsh, by his own admission, disliked the media and doing interviews. Take one part healthy disdain for the media, and add one part charismatic aura, and you get someone who is intriguing to listen to. He left people wanting more.

You can't have the first part without the other, or you end up like Malthouse in his last few years. You can't have the second part without the first, because nobody will take you seriously.

Also - and this is a big factor - we're living in a time when most normal Australians have had it up to their eyeballs with mincing, mewling, grovelling, sycophantic politically correct arsewipe politicians and public figures who wouldn't know a dose of realtalk if it sat adjacent to where their balls used to be.

Walsh is certainly a tough act to folllow but winning is the only thing that really matters. A coaches media performance doesn't count for much. I want to warn you not to be press conference junky like me. To use an example, I enjoyed Sando's pressers. He was generally well spoken, didn't make excuses and I usually got the idea that he knew exactly what our problems we're and that he was the right man to fix them. I made the mistake of letting baseless assumptions about his character get in the way of actual scrutiny.
