Player Watch Elliott Himmelberg - Contract extension to 2024

2 year deal for a depth player is lunacy. 1 year at the absolute most would have sufficed if we wanted to keep him as a backup. Or a delist re-rookie on 1 year
I know he's inconsistent and can be cumbersome but he's shown enough signs here and there, plus he's still only 24. At the very least, gives some of our young SANFL boys somewhere to kick too. Still a decent option if Thilthorpe, Fog go down.

It's a contract I agree with, he is our first choice depth KPF and second ruck.

With Walker an injury or one year away from retirement our forward still needs a missing piece.

We can't give up all our tall depth and himmelberg has had a major role in 2 wins this year as a fourth quarter specialist.

Better than the other options for the next 2 years.

Well, didn't see that one coming.

Fingers crossed we see a Fog like jump in performance from Berg during this contracts lifespan. And if Billy goes maybe we finally trial him behind the ball

Finding even semi competent AFL key forwards is difficult. They are scarce. Not surprised he was retained

Understudy for Thilthorpe, Fogarty, Walker

Two years is very, very strange. Reid ain’t very good at the old contract thing, is he

Fine to keep as depth, though. You’d think Fish is gone

Happy with the signing. If we had traded out Fisch, Himmelberg and Frampton we would be extremely low on key position players. If Tex only has 1 year left then a forward line with TT, Fog and Himmelberg could be good

OK with keeping him as depth. We were always going to keep one of Himmelberg and Frampton. Himmelberg would have been my choice, too. Assume this means Frampton is gone, and McAsey potentially traded.

If anyone stayed back to watch the Twos last week, The Berg was fantastic. I suspect he has been offered 2 years+ elsewhere and he is as good as it gets for a cheap, back up ruckman/forward.

Now to blow your mind Spackler, I would not be surprised if we offered another contract to Big, Billy Frampton!

Why would he take that then?
You’d think the opportunity to crack another side might have been tempting.

Not sure why everyone thinks 2 years is strange?

KPF/Ruck depth don't grow on trees and it's highly likely he would have been offered 2 years elsewhere, despite what everyone else thinks.

I'm not his greatest fan at all, but how many times have other teams been caught out this year with no depth. We've already used him for specifically that reason this year.

Disagree, every side has a few of them and every year there are players available in the draft or trade as backup.

Good best 22 KPF/rucks are extremely valuable though

Shaun McKernan eeked out a 12 year career with 3 teams by being depth, it's not crazy for talls to hang on lists way longer than smaller players without ever breaking into the 22 on a consistent basis.

Need to fill the spot with a "plug n play" guy. May as well be Berg.

No better/worse than anyone else, and doubt he would be on much coin anyway.

Is the cost of bringing another one in worth it when you could keep Himmelberg though?

It depends, but with a 1 year deal you could assess the options after every season. With 2 years we are locked into him even if a better player becomes available next year
