They have the same opportunity as Fremantle though. If Fremantle can go up a position, so can St Kilda. Freo might have first dibs on it, but that's essentially what I was getting at. Next round, they could be above Essendon in the 8.

There are still 10 realistic clubs fighting for the 8.

True, but assuming we pencil Ess/Coll in as a loss for Essendon (hard to see how it wouldn't be) then Freo's fate is in our own hands. Win all three and we make it.

Saints are in a position where they could win all 3 and still not make it. I'll certainly breathe a lot easier if Geelong roll them next week though.

Norths outs were far more significant then what Essendon had out and on top of that they had three players not on the bench yet won running away so how do you figure Essendon are a top 8 side?

From the sportal injury list:

North Melbourne Injury List

Tom Curran (foot) - season
Jack Ziebell (suspension) - 1 week
Lindsay Thomas (suspension) - 1 week
Leigh Adams (shoulder) - test
Updated August 7

Highlighted players played

So you were missing Ziebell and Thomas (from suspension I might add, so they have themselves to blame) and no-one else. Essendon were missing Zaharakis, Howlett, Winderlich, McVeigh, Myers, Stanton and Ryder. Your injuries amount to Adams, Well and Grima. That's it. I don't know how Zaharakis, Stanton and Ryder aren't important, but anyway.

We certainly didn't tonight, it was painstaking to watch.
We played with guts, but I wouldn't exactly call it a showcase in terms of skills from either side. Given we won as we did, I can imagine it being especially painstaking for Bombres fans.

Wells, Ziebell, Adams, Thomas, Grima vs Ryder, Stanton, Zaharakis, Howlett and Myers.

There's not much between those two lists. When you take into account Essendon basically played with an extra 3 players today then it's fair to say the odds were stacked against us.

You do realise Essendon are entitled to have an off day right? You've also played them out of form. Fact is, if Essendon had North's injury run, which amounts to little more than suspensions to Thomas and Ziebell for a few weeks and an injury to a ruckman you don't need, they wouldn't have to beat North to make the eight, they'd already be there. Have a look at North's top 15 from last year, nearly all of them have either played a large part of the season, or have already retired.

They lost to a team who had 19 players on the park. That's worse than an 'off day'.

Maybe their early season form wasn't a true indication of their ability. Maybe it was a result of their ridiculous preseason. It's hard to get a read on Essendon.

Essendon could win all 3 and still miss the finals.

Essendon are fairly easy to read. When they had their best on the park they were good. When they didn't, they weren't. It's hard to keep momentum up when you keep losing key players.

Their 1st 10 weeks was the easiest draw in the AFL. We over rated them. 2nd half is a lot harder and they have been found out.

Your whole season has been the easiest draw in the afl. I hardly see their draw early on as that easy. They played an inform Carlton, North, Collingwood and West Coast. And you can only beat who you play. My point stands, Essendon's season has been derailed by injury. Yours hasn't. You're reading too much into one game, especially as Essendon beat North earlier in the year with two injuries on the day.

Only travel V Suns and GWS - they played - 18th, 17th, 16th, 14th, 13th, 12th, 11th, 6th, 5th, 3rd. You won't find an easier 1st 10 weeks than that - including the Roos.
