His first quarter was awesome...
He played well in the 1st qrt but he had no opponent. He shut down nobody. Look at the highlights and you will see close hiding in a fwd pocket or out wide with Aliir paying absolute zero respect and just blowing things up. Even Stewart has a man. You could tell Scotty was pi$$ed in the press conference with that part of the game.

Idk, I actually think he is to blame for that. We know it's NOT a particular game plan that causes us to consistently fail, since it's not like Scott has implemented the same game plan over and over in finals. During his tenure we've gone in to finals with many different styles of play. This 2020-21 high possession chipping game plan isn't the same style we brought to the 2013 finals or the 2016 finals for example.

The one consistent theme, however, is this collapse in our intensity and skill level in finals. Our list has been turned over almost completely in the last 10 years but no matter which players are out there, the mental fragility still seems to always be there as a defining characteristic of Geelong in finals under Scott. Culture is a soft factor in football which makes it hard to analyse or quantify; it's not something tactical where you can see visually on screen what the coach been training them to do. It's more intangible than that. But that doesn't mean it's not a real thing that influences outcomes. There must be a reason we always go to water in finals. There's something about Scott's coaching that breeds mentally weak players.
Agree with this. Also we lack the nasty factor. Lycett pushing everyone around at halftime and our lads just giggled. There is no push back when it gets tough. Beauty of the last dynasty were we had it all over the ground with Scarlett, Chappie, Moons, Rooke, Milburn. Tough mentally and wont take Sh#t.

In all these seasons, cats are the older team. Is there something in not being able to cover the ground offensively and defensively?

what’s the talk of finals failure stuff when we were half a game away from winning a premiership last year?? Some short memories.
yeah if the afl just shortened all games by 50% we'd be right. Sorry but re-hashing that old argument is just garbage. The only reason we made the GF was because we didn't meet Richmond beforehand. Otherwise they almost certainly would have wilted under that pressure then too.
Face it GC_26 , this team folds under high pressure finals football. How many times must it be repeated?

We need to make changes now. I started typing this at quarter time. Could have used the same thing for the last 10 years or so.

GAME PLAN

  • This starts with our silly game plan which is slow, boring, predictable, sideways and backward disposals. Does not stand up and is typically pathetic in the finals. Beats weak sides during the year, gets into the finals and then we get pumped. Image from another poster says it all:
  • Scott has a winning record of 37.5% in finals.
Scott has a winning record of 71.6% in the regular season. (from another poster)

  • View attachment 1219095
  • I remember Cook, who is very astute saying that the most important thing is that we make the finals every year. I beg to differ that perhaps it is best to build a team capable of winning premierships. Straight sets is becoming the norm.
  • 3 goals in 3 quarters. What chance have you got???????
  • out of the last 9 qualifying finals we have lost 8. There is a patten there
  • Chipping the ball, unable to handle pressure and composure as we are not skilled enough. The game plan is flawed in a pressure situation. It is clear to everybody except our coach. We are becoming a laughing stock of the league.
  • Incredible frustration and boring game plan
  • have 3 key forwards and can not play direct to give them a chance
  • Above the shoulders is a problem. Playing our younger inexperienced players would not help but they have to be given game time while we are in transition.
  • We choke in front of goal. Miss the shots we should get
  • If Scott does not change this game plan show him the door. I do not care how many games he has won or how man excuses he has. HE HAS BEEN THERE TOO LONG.

LIST CHANGES

  • Too old, too slow, too unskilled, too soft, too mentally fragile
  • Reality is we need a fresh approach as there is lack of trust in this set-up
  • Drop the players that let us down in the finals every time
  • Wholesale list changes are required. Drop Rohan (disappears in big games), Dahl (cannot kick longer than 30 metres, 3-4 disposals per game), Henderson (slow and error ridden), Dangerfield (big game looser), Kolo (cannot keep his feet and to slow), Rohan (where are you?)

UPSIDE
  • Close, Henry,

FUTURE
  • Rebuild the side. Must rejuvenate the side as the players will have are on a downward spiral and will NOT win a premiership.
  • Coach changes needed to introduce a game style that wins premierships
  • Leadership changes.
  • Call Clarko now.
  • Play the younger players. Give them a go. Holmes, De Koning, Clark, Narkle, Stephens etc
  • Need key pack marking forward, outside run midfielder, inside monster midfielder, key backman…. Too many holes.
Cannot like this enough mate. If I had the energy I’d post something similar. Maybe I will in time.

Pretty sure Guthrie failing to hit Henderson on the full from 25m away on the half back flank resulting in Motlop running into an open goal for the first goal of the game had more to do with setting the tone.
Hawk missing his shot directly in front set the tone.

Garbage. It was his 250th game. No other decorated senior player got stuck as the sub in a milestone game. He was absolutely vital in Round 22 the previous week against Brisbane (20+ touches and 2 goals). That game was ground zero in so many ways - the team, the club, this board - the reverberations are still being felt.

To this day it remains one of the most baffling decisions I've seen made by any coach. Some may put it down to arrogance on Scott's part, but I feel the more plausible explanation is that he just did what he has an unfortunate tendency to do come finals: overthink things.

Sorry to say but Miers is fast becoming my most disliked player in our side, Menegola has had that title pretty comfortably for years now but Miers is closing the gap, just offers nothing when not kicking goals

It will be a cold day in hell before a player like Miers returning from injury overtakes the inconsistent shitty skilled goal hungry Menegola.

The season ended at training on Thursday the 12th of August. We have not covered Stewart and cannot. And what little drive out of defence we had left went with Tuohy's hamstring. Injuries can cruel a season.

Looking at the bigger picture, Geelong has managed to defy the AFL system. Teams don't spend a decade in the top four after multiple flags. The whole point of the salary cap and draft is to prevent that from happening. So credit is due to the creative recruitment, maintenance of a good culture, and sustained excellence in coaching. It was a gallant effort and impressive in ambition but ultimately fell just short of delivering a premiership. Now it's time for the club to reassess.

Henry was good tonight, and Close impressed in his first final. I'd like to see Holmes get a game next week, so he gets a taste of finals football.

Really good succinct and balanced post.

I think something else too. When he decides he doesn't like a player he treats them like shit no matter what.

Lever and Alir are key backs. They both were just standing not even bothering to pick up an opponent causing us all sorts of grief.

It’s disappointing we have guys like Dalhaus and even Close that are slow and don’t make teams pay.

Close is far from slow mate.

He was ok tonight.

I get your emotional, trust me I get it after that. But this simply isn’t true, we made a grand final last year with this game plan and we’re even leading at half time with this “bs” game plan. Even with the Richmond “ heat” we still lead at half time.

you don’t go half a game to winning a premiership if you have a poor game plan. It’s a bit of common sense, unless you think we have some sort of super team like our 07 side which is underperforming. I don’t see how we “should” be winning premierships or how we have somehow underachieved.

you mention the reduced games? Ok sure, so your saying it’s the players who tire out and not Scott’s coaching or game plan then?

The list build strategy isn't at fault, it's the mental weakness in finals. That has nothing to do with list build strategy.

Think it has a lot to do with it. You recruit a bunch of players in their late 20s - or more recently and much worse, early 30s - then wonder why they look slow and tired in finals? They recruit known proven failures like Rohan and again act surprised when he vanishes when pressure is applied?

Mental weakness is absolutely valid and you've got a good point with it, but the recruiting disaster plays a big part too. Because it was predicted years ago.

Surely Gary Rohan now has one of if not the worst finals record of all time
21 finals

188 disposals 8.95 average

65 marks 3.095 average

44 tackles 2.095 average

14 goals 0.66 average

Cant see how he offers more than a kid

I try to keep my composure after losses but I’m flipping out, I’m angry now.

This is 10 years of not handling the heat. We made a GF last year because Collingwood and Brisbane didn’t bring the heat, I was especially shocked by Brisbane after the heat they gave Richmond in the qualifying final and earlier in the year. The prelim they didn’t seem interested so we won.

We play keepings off, it does NOT work. I’ve hardly been against Scotty before but it’s just so obvious now it doesn’t work. They all fumble and go to water under real finals pressure.
If teams are off a bit we can win but that’s on them not us.

Now I’m on the it’s time to see Scott go bandwagon unfortunately even if we win the flag. The teams remaining aren’t that good and they might be off when we play them. They’ll have to be if we are any chance from here.
The game plan doesn’t stack up in finals.

So why was he rested as our sub?

Not sure we'll make wholesale changes

More like O'Connor out, Tuohy in

And maybe Simpson out for Higgins

Doubt we make more than 2 changes unless injuries
Please no. Why on earth do we want half step Higgins in the side. Simpson at least takes on tackles
