As we are now getting into the season and we are starting to get a bit more serious with discussion, seems a suitable time to post the following as it's repeatedly shown itself to be a value reference tool in trade & draft discussion

And as per normal, thanks to Lore for putting this together - always a fantastic reference tool

And yes this post is now stickied - makes it easy to keep track of (can easily reverse this though if needed)

With key forwards you either splash out for an absolute top notch one or save your cash and picks. Chasing a good but not great key forward with big money is almost always a mistake.
I think the bigger issue is that good key forwards command huge money on the market. Ty Vickery is the poster boy, of course, but Casboult isn't far off.

While this is true you can win a flag without a dominant key forward if you have very good small/medium forwards. Look at Melbourne in 2021, the dogs in 2016. Even our gun teams of 2007-2011 only had capable key forwards not guns.
The Dogs were a fluke case (with no disrespect to them) and hence I'd rule them out of any analysis.

Melbourne is the most interesting case of the lot IMO. They played well in 2018 with Jesse Hogan at full-forward, then only got their shit together again once Tom McDonald cemented CHF; now that Ben Brown and McDonald are unavailable/crap, they have been a bit nowhere since.

I know that's correlation, but you need something there.

Sooner or later a Blitz type with come along that is 205 if not taller. Some freak basketballer type probably I think Lebron James is 206 ..would have been interesting to a athlete like that in our game. Some day a tall mid and it will change the way rucks are thought of. Blitz has almost done that.
Honestly, the change-up ruckman who can play a different role as their primary role is one of the most undervalued players in the game.

Power lock away Dylan Williams, race for Esava Ratugolea heats up

The Power have locked down another piece of their future down back, but what impact will it have on their plans to land Esava Ratugolea, as other clubs start to come to the party.

Port Adelaide has locked away free agency key defender Dylan Williams on a two-year deal as clubs frantically scour the market for quality defenders.
But the Power has a fight on its hands in its bid to prise Esava Ratugolea out of Geelong, with the 25-year-old defender in high demand.

Geelong is still hopeful of retaining the intercepting tall, but Ratugolea has strong interest from multiple clubs.

Port Adelaide is one of those suitors but Ratugolea has a five-year offer on the table from a rival, putting the Power down the pecking order.

Essendon and Hawthorn are seen as strong suitors for Ratugolea, who has been stuck at times behind Jack Henry, Tom Stewart, Jake Kolodjashnij and Sam De Koning.

Sydney is another club sure to be aggressive in the key position defender market given their strong interest in Tom Barrass has been rebuffed, with the veteran to stay at the Eagles.

The Cats are hopeful of retaining Ratugolea but given the 25-year-old is out of contract they do not have the same leverage as last season so could end up trading him.

Ratugolea had been linked to the Power, who this week re-signed full back Trent McKenzie on a one-year deal.

Williams was a free agent after being delisted, then relisted by the Power before his breakout season.

The No. 23 draft pick from 2019 was finally able to finally work hard enough to develop elite fitness then transform himself into a long-kicking marking defender.

The Power have also been linked to Essendon defender Brandon Zerk-Thatcher, who has been offered a modest deal by the Dons.

He is a good o/head mark which is an asset - i hope he makes the grade - i dont know whether he will

Who he reminds me a bit from yester year is Grant Tanner - or better known as " The Rifleman "
Knevitt is an extractor with good vision. He's not an outside runner.

5 year deal lol fake article.

Conway missing anotherVFL game is concerning .. im not sure if his the answer to our ruck problems, his body keeps letting him down, we need another ruck eg Sweet to replace Ceglar position and even try to challenge Stanley, but I'd also rookie list a young kid as well, incase if Conway won't make it..

What has the club said about his fitness of late?

I'm hoping the reported 5-year offer isn't from us

But if he has been offered 5-years, I hope he's management team have had a provisional agreement signed - it's sounds a crazy offer for a 25yr old, who since his senior debut 6 seasons ago has only played 20 games in a season once, and isn't a lock in the 22 of his current team

You're punting on getting a bargain over those 5 years and hoping it doesn't instead turn into an expensive VFL/SANFL investment

Please Please 🙏 Darcy Parish, can you come to Geelong Please

If you don't than Matt Crouch, you will do the job 🙏🙏

Theres plenty of mids currently going around who are "just mids" and don't do much else.
Clayton Oliver/Bontempelli/Liberatore/Merrett/LDU/Serong/Neale/Cerra/Brayshaw/Miller the list goes on and on. They are all "just mids". None are like Petracca who can go forward and kick 4, or like Blicavs who can play everywhere, or Daicos who can play midfield or HBF.
Bont can definitely go forward and bang goals.

was top 10 in his draft year:

RankResult (seconds)Name

I was 3rd in the state as a 14 year old. And I've put on around 10Kg since then.

Now 78

He really isn't. Far too slow.
When he stretches out to full stride he does get moving. But he does not have that electric pace. Definitely quicker than Menegola lol. He also set the highest number of repeat sprints for the team in the past few matches he played for us in the Seniors I believe, so he does have a motor. Don't quote me on that one, as I couldn't check that data, but I remember seeing that once a while back.

Generally speaking, I agree with what you wrote. Players can be moved back and forward as they develop - Andrew Mackie was drafted as a key forward, Corey Enright as a midfielder, Esava obviously as a forward/ruck, Brad Ottens as a CHF, SJ as a forward.

There are exceptions, though. Ruckmen are really only ever ruckmen (as Melbourne are finding out with Grundy), and you can't turn any other type of player into a tall forward - they are either born with it, or they're not. Sorry Ben Graham and Harry Taylor.

Generally, I think clubs need to be wary of where you can top up cheaply and where you can't. Tall forwards are always the hardest spot to fill; you can usually get a ruckman, a half-back or an inside mid fairly cheaply.
Naughton was a defender

So who's actually retiring other than Smith? Menegola, Tuohy, Hawkins, Danger all in the next couple of years. Do we need to draft another young Key Forward in the first round so when Cameron retires he's ready to step up.

I’d suggest Tuohy retires this year and Menegola and Ceglar aren’t offered new contracts - taking four 30+ players off our list.

Hawkins, Duncan retire next year. Dangerfield end of 2025.
