As we are now getting into the season and we are starting to get a bit more serious with discussion, seems a suitable time to post the following as it's repeatedly shown itself to be a value reference tool in trade & draft discussion

And as per normal, thanks to Lore for putting this together - always a fantastic reference tool

And yes this post is now stickied - makes it easy to keep track of (can easily reverse this though if needed)

I’d suggest Tuohy retires this year and Menegola and Ceglar aren’t offered new contracts - taking four 30+ players off our list.

Hawkins, Duncan retire next year. Dangerfield end of 2025.
And did I read correctly we have 1 first rounder then nothing until pick 80. Neale, Knevitt to name a couple I don't think are the answer.

Stanley and Rohan perhaps next year too.

So who's actually retiring other than Smith? Menegola, Tuohy, Hawkins, Danger all in the next couple of years. Do we need to draft another young Key Forward in the first round so when Cameron retires he's ready to step up.
Look im not saying there automatically selections, do have Neale and Foster as potential candidates as key forwards, but there are 2 to work with...

Ok question to everyone... if we come with 3 picks in this years draft, what are the 3 position types you would pick ?

But we still may get players from trade period as well..

Key Forward, Key Defender and a running Half Back who could potentially play Mid

High end big bodied inside mid, key defender, and key forward. These are the biggest gaps in our side, IMO. Suspect Sav leaves, so should be a mid-late 2nd. Still think Doedee comes given he hasn't signed yet.

For mine, our off-season probably looks like this:

OUT: Ceglar, Sav, Tuohy, Smith,
IN: Doedee, Pick 7-10, Pick 30-40, Pick 60 (only 60 look like being taken so our pick will come in a lot)
Retain: Parfitt (gets a reprieve due to lack of picks), Menegola (same as Parf unless he wants more opportunity), Stanley (needed for another year to usher Conway in)

Get Captain Mainwaring, he has experience dealing with Dad's army.

With our first pick .. I feel we must draft the best talent.

We need more than just one player or one role... but obvious spread..leg speed is a need

I’m sure you could do this with every draft but in 2016 we took Timm House and Ryan Abbot with back to back picks right before Nick Larkey and Mitch Lewis. Yikes

We need to draft another slow defender of two. Preferably someone who is willing to grab the ball and take a tackle.

After last nights game I’m even more sure we need some small lockdown defenders.
The list is bare but there’s definitely options
I have only listed players who are listed as out of contract on Footywire.

Nick Holman Gold Coast, he’s currently played as a pressure forward.
But he doesn’t like to lose any contest and a great tackler.

Kaine Turner Roos
See above

James Jordan Melbourne
Played more a HB/Wing but has defensive elliments to his game

Nick Coffield Saints
Ravedged by injury.
Proven Defender, just needs to get his body right

Hugo Ralph Smith Richmond
I do think this kid can make a solid afl career as a defender, tough and quick.

Abbott was about necessity in adding a needed back up ruck option - we were looking to pick him up in the rookie draft but reported to be strong interest from other clubs, including WCE, so we took him with our last pick

House is the one who didn't work

But if anyone wants some "What IFs" from that draft year, just look at some of the names from that years rookie draft:
  • Sam Draper
  • Peter Ladhams
  • Rowan Marshall
  • Cameron Zurhaar
  • Robbie Fox
  • Oscar McInerney

Plus we got J. Henry, Z. Guthrie, J. Jones & S. Simpson

Hopefully Mark O'connor has a few siblings. We could do with one on every line.

Doedee? I never contemplated this. Would be a very good get. Next captain after Stewart

With free agency there's no need to really target positions at the draft. Just get the best available. If anything we have more of a need for talls especially if Sav moves on but only tilt that way if it's a toss up.

In terms of retirements I'd say we'll tap Tuohy on the shoulder. So Smith, Tuohy, Ceglar and Menegola out this year. Sav is likely to leave via trade and one other getting cut (Simpson? Whyte? Kroger?) gives us 6 open list spots. I think Parfitt stays since he's contracted and wouldn't garner much interest given his season.

Bring in Parish, a mature ruck, maybe one other mature player (Doedee? Georgiadis?) and 3x draft picks.

Two ball pig mids and a versatile tall.

Also need more midfielders who get less than 20 touches a game

Kane Turner? Really?

Just trying to give some discussion to the group, would you like to try and engage and bring something or just find negatives in peoples posts.

I don’t see why Turner can’t be a BP
I like James Jordan and Ralph Smith. We should go after those types and back in our development coaches. Is Adam Tomlinson too old? I've always liked him. Wasting away at Melbourne
