Bowes deal an outlier because the Suns misjudged the market and got held to it, but the concept that a player and his contract could be a net liability is not limited to Bowes.

Yes but the suns have retention problems and couldnt afford to lose king or anderson (because if anderson went rowell would have too) and stuffed their cap so they had to ship bowes out to fix it. That type of circumstance is very unique and doesnt apply in the dogs case and wont apply in most cases.

Yeah cool but the dogs have some serious names to sign and some guys already on big contracts. I could see them being in a similar position

Tend to agree they will need cap relief for the rising stars they have on the list much like Collingwood a few years ago, that’ll add some leavage to the negotiations should it be true

I think the suns have had to pay a lot more to keep guys than vic clubs have.
Yes dogs will need some money to keep juh and darcy long term and lobb and daniel are bad deals but i think they have a lot more room to move than gc had.

Lobb will probs go.
Smith will probs go.
Maybe one of Macrae or Daniel could go if needed.

They'll be ok for sure.

Definitely smith is gone.
Lobb is gone if someone will take his contract (but hes a fraud)
Macrae and daniel 50/50

all this talk about getting bailey smith without decent trade capital is fanciful, he's trade market value is high and there are clubs with higher picks than us would happily trade for him. I do think he is leaving tho, bulldogs would want to budget what they need for sam darcy and bontenpelli before committing to smith as they both OOC next of next year.

It doesn't matter.

If Bailey wants to come to us, there's nothing they can do. If Bailey wants to go to Hawthorn, there's nothing we can do either.

It's never about who's got the better deal, otherwise every club would just send their players to bottom 4 clubs to get the best return.

The player makes a commitment, and you make do from there...but people still manage to fall for this every single year.

Surely after Tim Kelly we'd know by now that it doesn't work that way?

Could've got a top 10 pick off Freo in return, but he was tantamount in going to West Coast and nowhere else.

maybe just me, but if it comes down to oliver or smith, I take oliver. his best is brownlow best, we also need someone with his game in the middle post dangerfield and selwood.

Also, people talk about his long contract, but it can be a benefit as he is currently 26, in 4 years time he be 30 and could be one of the best in the league still and only on roughly 1 mill? with the yearly cap increase, would you want to pay olvier a mill or mclug 1.5 in 2028?

Yeah I can absolutely see a scenario where Macrae could go for a second rounder because of his contract. But people can’t expect us to get a first rounder along with him

i know how trading works, is also not bigfooty type negotiation, "5th rounder take it or leave it as he nominates us" if smoth noinate us our first will be invovled.

He's out of contract, it doesn't matter what the Bulldogs want to do. Just like we were with Sav.
If Bailey says "I'm going to Club XYZ" the two teams will then negotiate and make a trade happen.
Everyone brings up Nick Stevens/Luke Ball and the preseason draft but it 99% of the time doesn't get to that.

Dogs know he wants out, they will work with wherever Bailey wants to go. That's it.
There's nothing else they can do, he walks either way.

I agree he's worth a first but a mid to late round first at best.

Where Macrae comes into that, no idea? But there's a high likelihood that if we've shown interest in Macrae and Smith and Bailey nominated us then you can for damn sure bet that the two clubs will try and make it work to get both over for draft capital in one move.

I’m certainly a tad confused as to why you say we don’t have “decent trade capital”… but we have plenty.

As if we have no chance of getting Smith the way Pure_Ownage says the Pies can’t land him (but I’d think even the Pies without holding a current R1 would still somehow make it work).

I’m not sure how you are rating Smith… but he is a guy that has done his ACL, been somewhat demoted on field prior to that by his coach and had some errors off field.

If we want him and he wants us… it’ll get done 100%

I am not saying that at all, I am saying we do have decent trade capital and it will be used if smith nominates us. a lot on here think we can get him on cheap maybe in for a shock come dec.

It's neither. He's Out of Contract...They aren't getting the farm, they aren't getting nothing.
It's somewhere in the middle.

1 x Mid to Late 1st Round Pick and maybe if you wanted to sweeten it like a 3rd Round Pick is more than enough for a guy coming off an ACL that has had off field issues but has a lot of talent that is and i can't believe i have to keep repeating this.

OUT. OF. CONTRACT

Out of contract like Sav and like Tim Kelly

Yep and two great examples of a big difference in players.

Tim Kelly was top 5 in a Brownlow count when he was leaving hence why West Coast paid up as much as they did.

Sav is a fringe best 23 player and has a history of injuries. That's why Port didn't pay up very much.

Smith is somewhere in the middle of that.

Hey I love Jack Macrae, been one of my fav non Cats for years, but anyone wanting him to sign at Geelong has rocks in their head. He has lost whatever small ounce of leg speed he had this year, I’d hate to see how slow he will be in 4 years. There is a reason they want him out (if that’s true).

Just watched VFL game against Swans. Good quality game. Knevitt, Edwards, Stevens, Humphries, Murdoch, Clohesy all looked good and to a lesser extent Willis and Foster. COS underwhelming. Looking at their ages all looked like keepers. Foster may be at risk due to lack of pace. Interesting to see where list spots open up. We probably get 3 or 4 retirements. Hardie at risk of being delisted.

To me Hardie and Foster - gone. Murdock is borderline

Yeah i agree.

We might get macrae for almost a throwaway pick but we are definitely paying a r1 for smith.

Hardies gone bc of age and bc they arent playing him.

Foster is gone bc guys like bradtke are doing more than him.

I wouldnt have a problem if we delisted murdoch but also we lack kpds in development-id probably keep one of him or jeka but not both.
