If you want a laugh, go and watch the game closely whenever the ball is in the vicinity of Himmelberg

His attack on the football is dead set embarrassing. He is so bad at attacking ground balls the opposition could stand still and Elliott would do nothing at all to stop them

Blaming umpiring is weak, we take the piss out of other boards when they complain about umpiring but then turn around and do the exact same thing. We just have to be better, we have to not kick 1.4, we have to not drop easy marks, we have to hit easy targets. Just be better.
Ruined the enjoyment of the game though.

We can't expect the umpires to be perfect but the standard in most games has been terrible & makes viewing harder. The AFL need to stop making stupid rule changes & make the umpires full time like the players.

Going to start in reverse tonight since the ugly & bad are probably where the match was lost. That being said there are some positives this week so I'm not as down beat compared to the previous 2 weeks which were shockers.

Ugly:
  • Goal kicking. We kicked ourselves out of any chance by missing a few too many. How many times did we hit the post? On the flip side they were deadly accurate.
  • Brown we've all known is struggling but tonight was comparable to ROB's ruck work last week. Definitely needs a spell, hopefully the coaching staff wake up eventually as they did Crouch & ROB.
  • Umpiring while it wasn't all bad or one sided the big decisions that always resulted in goals, 50m penalties etc had no consistency and almost all went one way. No I'm not saying it altered the end result, just the scoreline a bit & made for painful viewing. Is what it is, Brisbane too good for us & thats fine.
  • Nicks backing Brown in despite it being apparent he wasn't up to it. Jones or Hamill had to go to Cameron much earlier.

Bad:
  • Keays was off again, his form has dropped off a fair bit of late. Started the year outstanding, needs to refind his mojo.
  • Himmelberg & Fogarty both competed quite well but the return just isn't good enough & too common of a trend with these 2. I'd be dropping Himmelberg & bringing Tilthorpe in. I did think Himmelbergs ruck efforts in recent weeks has been better but I dont think should be continuing to hold out Tilthorpe.
  • Rachele might be a bit stiff to be in here but his effort has come right off the boil in recent weeks. Completely understandable for a first year player, probably just needs a quick spell to freshen up at some point. The 2nd efforts and working hard just aren't there lately & confidence does seem a little off as a result.

Good:
  • Hately was excellent, super impressed with his clean work & finding the right spots to be involved. Jury still out long term but that was a very impressive performance capped off with a goal.
  • Doedee was outstanding all night.
  • Jones continues to defend extremely well. Needs to tidy up disposal.
  • Laird was so much better tonight, made a lot of difference to our competitiveness. 16 kicks vs 16 handballs, much more balanced.
  • Dawson continues to prove he was a bargain get.
  • McAdam another strong performance, his stint in the SANFL has done him a lot of good and kept him playing more on edge with his effort.
  • Soligo showed a bit, that one handed take and sweet kick when the heat was coming set up a goal.
  • Rowe defensively worked a lot harder, pretty decent match overall. A very good user of the ball usually so if he can just find a way to round his game there may be a spot. Jury out.
  • Hamill looked pretty good tonight, I've often been a critic last year but his dynamic play seemed to be on more tonight. Definitely keen to see if he can build on this.

Very Good:
  • The effort was back & much better. We lacked the execution compared to them but few bits and pieces in the above change and we probably only go down by 2-3 goals.
  • Not getting creamed at stoppage with endless clean exits all night. Last week was a new low so good to see a response.

I think that about covers it. Disappointed and frustrated watching as the momentum swung and they ran over us & our attempts to answer were missed goals. In the end never expected to beat Brisbane anyway but wanted the effort and hunger there which it largely was.

Hately's game was as good as the rest of his career combined.

Fogarty terrible in the way that particular way he always is, where he simultaneously does almost nothing and yet is still somehow only 2/3 disposals away from a personal best.

But my Hashtag BIG CALL concerns when/if Adelaide are competitive again. The first year Adelaide is back in the finals, Jordan Dawson will lead the Brownlow count, pick up a needless one match suspension in the final round, costing himself the medal, and Adelaide will be knocked out in the first week in his absence.

edit: Hamill looked ok. But I erased the tick next to his name after seeing him get the ball in space, then somehow running himself into a position where the only opposition player can smother his kick while lying motionless on the ground.

Such a shame after that purple patch from round 3-6, but RT needs to come in next week. Fog did enough to stay in, didn’t think Andrews had a huge impact on the result and thought Fog was a big part of that.

Not really blaming the umpiring for the loss, we still lose anyway but by 3-4 goals instead. It made for a shocking spectacle

Aside from getting reamed by the umpires tonight there were some good signs and at least we got effort tonight.

Team was good apart from a few shit games Brown (got absolutely carved up, might be time to bring McPherson back in as lock down defender) , Himmelberg (if Thilthorpe is right to go he has to come in)

Apart from that the rest of the team was good.

Thought Murray was good in contest too

hately
soligo
berry
doedee
dawson
mcadam
rowe.. did have some quiet periods though.

bad

yet another example of just how off the pace our midfield is.

keays.. massively overrated. cannot kick a football to save himself. captain chaos.
laird.. was garbage apart from finally hitting a couple of decent passes in that last qtr. just too many garbage kicks, poor hand passes and bad decisions.
smith.. looked a bit off tonight
brown. completely pantsed.
tex.. come on mate.. your kicking really let you down tonight.
rachele. needs a rest. the lad is cooked.
sholl.. see ya. too many half arsed efforts. happy to trade to the blues if they really want him.
murray. no better than frampton.. lets try borlase. cant really lose in doing so.

ugly

the rules of the game and the way its umpired.. its just dogshit. almost unwatchable.

His core strength is non-existent

Harris Andrews is quality of course but he tossed him aside like he wasn't there

Tex, Thilthorpe, Fog please

The most frustrating umpiring call in the game is where the ball is dropped halfway through a tackle, but then holding the man is called because the tackle continued. Surely common sense would see that at the very least a no-call.

Positives
  • Despite being undersized the key backs controlled their talls well. Doedee was sensational, despite being outmatched physically for most of the night.
  • Cannot believe we got Dawson for a late first rounder. Most damaging player in the team by a mile, surely leading the BnF
  • Soligo had some nice moments. Thought he had some really clever disposals in heavy traffic. Definitely something to work with.
  • It's hard to overcome being that short and slow, but Rowe's delivery inside 50 is probably best in the team. Seemed to work harder defensively today as well
  • I'm uncertain Hately has enough weapons to be in the team long term, but comfortably the best game of his career today. If he can consistently be dangerous around goal its a pretty bit plus for him.
  • Berry battled hard as ever. He's got nice balance, he's already looking hard to tackle. I'm getting a bit concerned about his disposal though, not sure he hit too many targets today, even when he had space.
  • McAdam dangerous as ever
  • Jones last month has been solid, just wish he would use his pace and kicking skills more aggressively.
  • I think Hamill has genuine star potential. There aren't too many guys in the league who can match his speed and agility. He just needs to find a way to find the ball more.
  • Laird, Keays solid
  • McHenry was ok until his head knock, then fell out of it completely.

Negatives
  • Brown well beaten, but hard to contain Charlie when there's that much space
  • Berg running out of tickets. Surely when Thilthorpe is back they'll swap them around.
  • Smith, Sholl, Hinge, Rachele quiet.
  • Delivery was poor, but Fog was quiet again. Competed with Andrews well though.
  • I don't think we were awful, but Brisbane were just infinitely cleaner around goal, and had much more space inside 50 in the second half. We continue to struggle to contain fast aggressive transition.
  • Strachan doesn't seem to be the saviour for the ruck. Was easily moved off his line a few times tonight.
  • Some of the umpiring decisions

Kieran Strachan was comprehensively beaten in the ruck and yet still somehow much more effective than O'Brien's last few weeks
Because nearly every time he got the tap it was to advantage
