Bass is a disgrace and is the first that should be cut, our defense is severely overrated. Our Norwood lite structure is killing this club, at every level.
All i know is we cant play offensively when we are always in defense mode. Hitting some targets in general play goes a long way too

Yeah you just can't handle the club copping some criticism and hit out at anyone who does. It's ok.

I think Ken, Lade, Voss, Nicks all get to be fairly critisised and have been. What your saying is the blame actually rests with the guy who built a super defensive structure in the back half which stands up pretty well no matter who plays in it.

I reckon you need to look at who's running our midfield and forward half.

If Bassett is telling everyone to kick to the pockets and have terrible skills then fair enough.

Defense is only relevant to attack, what you concede is only important to what you score, and right now it seems our methods of team defense are hindering our scoring efficiency.

The theory is the less they score the easier we'll be able to outscore them, but it's falling down. What good is keeping the other guys to 12 goals when we can't push past 10 ourselves?

For & Against stats suggest otherwise.
It is really composure & effective ball usage at the opposition's half which is killing us.

You can't miss sitters after sitters and expect 'quality' sides not to punish

Overall our F and A column might look good, because we beat up on shit teams where the gameplan thrives, but not better opponents, or even mediocre opponents prepared to do what it takes to dismantle it (Essendon going all out attack).

I said it before, all year in fact.

Our game plan is solid but decays away with the more points we kick.

Kicking points for sure.

The energy expended to keep the ball locked in takes it's toll when kicking point after point. Which is eventually multiplied by when the inevitable Joe the goose happens because we are too stuffed to get back.

Actually, kicking points is not so much a problem if you keep kicking them until you score a goal.

It's the multiple inside 50 entries that generate no score whatsoever that are the real issue. If you don't even score a point, you're not creating pressure on the defence to push up a little higher and just encouraging them to flood back more and more.

It's why I don't have a problem with our players having a ping if the backline is flooded so long as they keep the ball locked inside the front half. Or the fact that we go for chaos balls when the ball is trapped in our forward 50. There would be something like 14-16 players in that area when that happens - not really conducive to an effective forward line structure.

What the real issue is stems from guys who should be kicking regulation goals that have been created from getting a turnover in defence (and therefore having more space) missing. When we CAN operate with a standard forward structure.

No one in the league misses those shots. Except us.

The players are also inept at deciding when to have a ping vs when to spot someone up. We were trying to spot in the last couple minutes of the the EF when scores were tied and having pings when we had the lead already and turning it over in extra time. Pretty much the same yesterday.

Half our trouble imo is when we don't have the ball. Our players don't know how to create space, we are school kids all around the footy.

exactly! both with the ball and without, it is why any team with decent clearance midfielders cut us up outside.
our forwards don't even know how to push off or create a metre on a lead!
we do so many things that are just amateur, and coachable.

Our ability to spread was one of our strengths in 2013 and 2014. Not certain why we have stopped doing this but it probably has something to do with the players lack of faith in each other to be able to actually hit a target and not turn the ball over. If you so spread and the ball is turned over you are then caught out on the rebound.

Now that Hinkley has got what he apparently wanted, the pressure on him for 2018 and beyond to produce great results will be enormous.

He may have succeeded in silencing our President's public utterances but he will never slience the membership who will be even more demanding and vocal than ever.

There will be no pressure. Didn't I read on here that Ken can't stand Ports supporters because they are ignorant so why would he take any notice of any criticism from us?

I'm certain there will be at least one AFL club seeking a new coach for the 2021 season so Ken's manager will be able to make some strategic leaks to the media to ensure that the Ports' board wets the bed again and offers him another three year extension in 2020.
