In Carlton/Bolton's defence did they have the youth to play then?

14 rounds in they had only debuted Weitering and Curnow. Silvagni and Cuningham then played a handful of games.

No McKay, Gowers, Glass-McCasker, Viojo-Rainbow, Smith, Foster - all 20 & under.

Onto the list came Wright (26), Phillips (24), Korcheck (24), Gorringe (23), Lamb (23), Kerridge (22/23), Sumner (22), Gallucci (22), Plowman (21)... and Carlton duly won 6 from 7 through April-June.

Bolton was the answer and Carlton was on the way. Some of us called it out as a false dawn against the tide of public opinion but were howled down.

Carlton is only now fielding the youngest teams of Bolton's tenure. It's a rebuild in ultra-slow motion.

Nope. Grand total of 7 players on the entire list under 20, 3 of them (Silvagni, Weitering and Curnow) played a substantial number of games anyway. Few others were never up to it (Viojo-Rainbow, Clem Smith).

The end of every year under Bolton has seen a pretty solid cull of players. A proper re-build takes time, I'd argue that this is the first 'proper' one we've ever done and it that didn't start until 2016.

McKay - do 18 year old key forwards traditionally get many games?
Gowers, Glass-McCasker, Viojo-Rainbow, Smith, Foster - what are those blokes doing now?

I mean yeah I suppose you could have just played kids who obviously weren't ready and likely (at that stage) weren't gonna cut it even if they somehow made it to 50+ games but I'm not sure how that would have helped us 3 years down the track.

In Hardwick's first year he debuted Dea (18), Taylor (18), Griffiths (18), Martin (18), Hicks (18), Grimes (19), Astbury (19), Nason (20), Gourdis (21), Webberley (21), O'Reilly (Irishman 22) ... and Relton (24). Plus Mitch Farmer (21) from Port.

Most of those players fell by the wayside, but Hardwick took his lumps and taught the group to play and not worry about the scoreboard. In three years they went from "worse than Fitzroy" to finals-bound.

Carlton didn't take the pain they should have in 2016.

SOS needs to go as well.
But he wont because.....well its because its Carlton hahaha
They are the laughing stock of the AFL at loosing respect at a rapid rate.

Is Richmond really the blueprint for quality list management?

Basically won a premiership on the back of 4 elite players, a few high quality B/A-graders and a heap of role players in a weak year, and couldn’t even make the Grand Final last year after dominating all and sundry in the H&A.

They are now paying a guy over a million pa to play as a second string key forward.

Geelong list build to their 2007-2011 seasons was incredible, Hawthorn’s build to 2008-2015 is probably the best I have seen, but until Richmond can do far more than jag one flag they’re no model for success.

I don't think your list of youth helps your argument. Maybe they missed out on developing Gowers.

I also don't recall many reasonable posters believing Carlton were on the rise even after they out performed expectations. I think the optimism was more around Bolton looking like a capable coach that could get the players to play for him unlike Malthouse during his tenure at Carlton.

What about the extensive list of failed mature-age players?? Maybe that wasn't Bolton's fault.

Maybe you missed it because it was often couched in 'Where are Richmond at?' threads.
I'm sick to death of having Carlton thrown in my face as an example to aspire to.
Yeah nah. A critical analysis of list progress in 2016 will show that Bolton's got everybody bluffed. Maybe he can coach, but he hasn't shown it yet.

Lol. We jave won more games in the last 2.5 years than any other team plus we eon a flag. That's a good start for success. Dynasties are now more difficult due to the evenness of the competition.

Is this not a contradiction of sorts?

dominating (post the premiership season) all is a decent blueprint, no? until the prelim anyway

top4, with a tough injury run in year three - for a team thats no good without its best players seems like not a bad template to aspire to for the SOS and Bolton cabal

half fit and third in the coleman.

Was a key reason for keeping the year on track despite losing Cotchin, Rance, Jack, Dusty, Grimes, etc.

And Richmond arguably wouldn’t have won any if the finals series wasn’t compromised and the 2017 Grand Final was played in Adelaide.

The AFL is in a general recession, and Richmond are currently leveraging a compatible game plan. They aren’t paragons of list management, as indicated by their paper thin midfield, which was shown up by Collingwood in the prelim and will continue to be exposed in big games while Richmond are still so reliant on Martin getting them going.

You have no idea. Our reserves have also been top 3 for several years. So our depth is fantastic. That is why we keep winning with many of our best out.
