I remember seeing Robran as a kid, the game just slowed down for him. No player I‘ve ever seen made football look so easy.

Blight was a freak. I think Barassi said that you could never train a kid by watching Blight because he just did the impossible. Marked when totally out of position, the goal in the post above. He did the freakish stuff every week. I remember seeing a Woodville game at Football Park back in the day and he just turned onto his left about 60m out and sent a torp straight through the goals. He kicked about 130 goals that year in the SANFL.

*Edit apologies mods this stuff shouldn’t be in this thread
I'll put it in the 1980s Woodville memories thread

Sure it's not just the hair/beard styling prompting the comparison?

I’m sure subconsciously it must have passed my mind their similar gangsta looks. But honestly, I mentioned Aker because both of them have a natural hunger for goals and are both lethal anywhere within the 50m arc. I’m pretty sure I’ve seen Rankine kick some nice goals on the left in some of the highlights, and both know how to use their speed and evasiveness. Both with similar body frames too.

I posed a general question a little while back. If JHF projects as the 'next' dangerfield and rankine projects as the next 'akermanis / mcleod', who would you prefer?

I suppose the answer is you are happy with either
I think the answer is you’d want both types in your team. One can help absorb more bruises, and the other can finish off a goal. Both types are probably just as equally important..?

Akermanis was as elite as it gets. If he's half as good I will be happy.

In his first 50 games Aker was a lot like Rankine - a small forward with potential. I see more natural ability in Rankine at the same stage of their careers. The question has always been can Rankine develop into a midfielder - does he have the tank and does he have the work ethic. Having Burgess on hand will give him the best chance.

It's actually Rankine, Rachelle and Dawson over JHF and Goater.

Yes, however had we done the deal, it would have been rachele and rankine for JHF and dawson as that pick 19 we would have got back would have been or been part of what went to sydney for him

To then have got rankine would have meant our f1 2023 and who knows how that trade would have gone ie would GC have accepted it?

They would have had to, that's the way it works.

It kind of looks like JHF would have asked for a trade to Port anyway.

Now that this is all done and dusted and I've had time to reflect, I actually can't believe we got Izak Rankine to the club.

Sure, I'm disappointed that we didn't get JHF, but I've never wanted a player more in their draft year than Rankine. I want to see him play like the player in that mix tape which is perhaps the greatest AFL mix tape ever produced and I can't wait to see what he can do for our side.

I can't wait for the start of the season.
Agree completely . So pleased we managed to get him off the Geelong Coast Suns

Interesting that lots of the VFL Media now reckon we did extremely well to get Rankine.

Deep down think they knew how mercurially talented he is and all of the pre Trade huff and puff was a form of coping mechanism by them as they simply hate us having elite talent, especially SA elite talent.

Most likely just a coping mechanism or an extension of their recent campaign against us. Maybe they were silly enough to think they could get inside his head.

Happy to own that i didn't believe that Pick 5 would be part of the deal, considering the multitude of other options available to us. At no stage did i ever believe he was going to the PSD though.

I was certain that pick 5 was gone, but if it went to GC it was just a matter of how much we’d be getting coming back our way. We folded badly, pick 5 was 100% certain to get him in the main draft. That should have been plan A and until Suns offered us something on top worth taking we shouldn’t have even bothered talking to them.

Taylor too..

But Taylor and pedlar should be mid/forwards.. not forward/mids!..

Rowe can go
Keays can follow him

Pedlar, taylor, rachele, rankine need to be prioritised over sloane, murphy, rowe, keays and mchenry.

Murph should be sent to defense.
Keays to the sanfl
Rowe to the delist pile
Sloane can play SANFL until he can prove he isnt cooked.
Mchenry isnt a small forwards a-hole.

Not trading Keays whilst at max value was a mistake. Like Sloane, players who’s entire performance is based on pure heart and determination become useless as the wear and tear on the body mounts. Keays is the new poster child.

I don’t think our midfield is too bad - just still developing. Certainly would be nice to have a big elite player in there but at the very least we need a bigger tagging type (could Hateley get stronger and play a Willem Drew role for us)

Bottom line Petracca, Oliver and Cripps destroy us more than any other players in the comp

I reckon Cripps has 12 Brownlow votes from his last 4 games against us

Oliver and Petracca I think have got the 3 and 2 the last 3 times we have played. Just too big and strong at the contest

We judge our mids based on their stats rather than how they influenced the result compared to their opposition. We get destroyed by oppo midfields whilst our guys rack up stats without positive impact. That said, saw some forward steps being taken later in the year. Even big ROB took a couple of forward steps before giving to Laird in the clear.

Like I said, I was a West Adelaide supporter, but Robran --- well, you just had to watch, admire and respect what he did.
Also Lindsay Head, Russell Ebert and mercurial Malcolm Blight (who appeared to make the impossible, possible. Have a look at this torp which crossed the goal line post-high ffs:
).

I remember Robran as long and lanky, but smooooth; one of those players who put the thrill in brilliance because he did it so easily, seemingly effortlessly. This is all I could find for you (how's the candy-selling handball??):

Rankine has a long way to go to be compared to Akermanis, or Bunji, or any of the above but if he gets even close he'll be a major asset for us.
Fwiw, I think Dawson has the most elite potential of any of our current players. He's all ready excellent but is star quality if played wing/connector and maybe rotated through the guts occasionally.

Going to allow myself a little big noting and gloating, actually played in that game at the end of that clip😊😊

No Paul Bagshaw in that list? You’re not serious 🧐
