I don't think this is a good idea to introduce this rule to the AFL as I firmly believe that the Grand Final is a prestige moment in any players careers where the medal itself should not be attained that easily. Lets say that this rule was used, the players who are not present on that day will not feel that special moment in obtaining the medal compared to the players who played. Even though injuries and/or form can be very cruel to players, they are professional enough to take it by the chin and accept the reality that they are gonna miss out. (Knowing they should recover and get back to their best for the following season). Just imho.

This is a good idea that the club can implement in their own way allowing players who missed out to get rewarded in some form and hopefully drive their hunger up to be in the final 22 team next year.

Yeah its a tough one. I wasn't necessarily endorsing the idea myself, rather suggesting that if ever such a rule was introduced, I personally don't think the medallion should be given to every Dick, Tom and Harry on the entire 'roster' as done in NFL. Rather, those who have actually contributed to the achievements throughout the whole season. Perhaps have two rules; playing at least x games during the regular season (i.e. 15-17) and then a minimum of 2 or 3 in the Finals series for those who miss out on Grand Final day. There would be very few instances where players would actually 'qualify' under this procedure but it would limit the very, very, unlucky footballing stories.

Again, I am not necessarily supporting these ideas myself, just posing alternatives to the current rule book (this post is timed quite nicely with the release of the Coaches' Survey). Who knows, wouldn't it be lovely to be debating this come Grand Final day when Embers, JK and even maybe Lecca are named for the last week in September ;) ...the likes of Hill, Hams and others could be be very unlucky.

I think anybody who played a game in a premiership winning season, should get a medal of some sort.

Those who played in the actual GF should get a special GF medal.

Imagine if Glass played every game in the season and finals, but wasn't able to make it to the GF. I think he would be deserving of some recognition for his contribution throughout the season.

Round 17! My God! That's the game after this coming one!
That would be correct. I heard Embers on the radio early last week saying he was 2 weeks away from returning but he said he would probably get a run in the WAFL first. I think when they say returning round 17 they mean returning to get some fitness via the WAFL in round 17.

i was at a sports function on Sat night and Dean Jones and Josh Kennedy were the guest speakers. I asked Josh when he will be back and he stated the earliest would be round 21 and that would be one game in the WAFL first

Josh is the type of player who doesn't need too much matches to have an impact. He'll take the best forward and give us structure. If he kicks goals great if not, his value by just being in the team will override it.

I'd be more conerned about Lecras's comeback - as he'll need a lot of matches to get his grove back. For example last year, even when he came back from his groin injury he was no where near the player he was in 2010. He did have a couple of good patches but it did take him a lot of games to get going.

He didn't train for 5 weeks before round 1...and kicked 7. Now that he is up and running he has the next month to get match fit. Still do not think we should risk Lecra.

yes true,
but in a big final the last think you need is for him to break down or become a liability

To be fair his only very good game was that first one and we have seen since that WB are something of a training drill for most teams. Plus Markovic is his bitch

Kennedy has 4 weeks out after a complete AFL pre-season where he built a fitness base.

Board: kennedy kicked 7 goals with 0 match fitness. we are from here on going to assume he can slot back into the team after every injury because he did well once on a crappy, underdeveloped full back.
