Thanks heaps.

I think this is a real point of weakness in the current WC side. Not so much the ability to win clearances or contested ball, but moreso mids who are able to a) have the strength to maintain possession under pressure at stoppages and b) distribute it effectively.

We definitely need some outside class, but the need for a strong or big bodied dynamic clearance player by hand, pace or foot, trumps this.

Operating under the premise that Sheed, who I acknowledge doesn't fit this exact criteria is magically gone by 11, would Crouch be your preference, or is there a player with different qualities whose class you believes trumps our need for talent around the stoppages?

I like both Crouch and Sheed a lot this year. Sheed has more class but Crouch I do like a touch more with his inside game the best in this draft with that ability to win his own ball and tackle better than anyone else. Crouch would be my pick but Sheed I still really like and feel is another very strong choice.

With those first round selections it's always to me anyway going to be a best available selection regardless of need.

Yep, I usually agree with this, simply was trying to source your POV given the now prevailing truism that the talent is very even at that level of the draft. So if it was who best fits our needs, otherwise is there anyone likely to stand out and make us forget them.

For instance, I am a big Sheed fan but wouldn't mind either of Bontempelli or Scharenberg at 6 if he slipped, likewise Acres or Freeman at 11. However, if they really are so even and Sheed is gone at 11 maybe Crouch would be a good pickup based on needs.

This may have been asked already, but now that we know that the Hawks will be targeting mids, who will be available at their picks Knightmare? Who do you see them targeting?

Matt Crouch if he slides would be the bargain of the draft.

Blake Acres if still available is another I think can really make it big.

Luke Dunstan is another I'd strongly recommend to Hawthorn as a stronger bodied mid.

Get any of them and Hawthorn have done well.

KM - two quick questions.

Who do you see Richmond taking at pick 11? Any chance kade kolodjashnij will slide there?

And secondly, I can't seem to find your actual phantom draft anywhere on this thread - any chance you could PM a link to the first page?

Cheers, and thanks again for the fantastic work!

With Malthouse past recruiting of players who play well on the big stage (ie. Thomas, Sidebottom dominated TAC Finals) could you see Carlton taking sheed at 13 if available? who else do you see carlton taking? Acres? Freeman? Bontempelli?

Salem if there has been heavily linked to Richmond. Lennon if he slides is another I expect Richmond to be high on.

Kolodjashnij is unlikely to be available at 11 and likely goes top 10 on draft day. If there he will be another who likely is considered.

Richmond seem to like their quality ball users so I'd expect that theme to continue as long as Hardwick is coach.

(Post 1 is my power rankings. Post 2 onwards is the phantom).

I don't expect Sheed to be available.

McCarthy did some big moment, big stage things during the u18 champs with that goal on the siren so he is one who fits that variety.

Carlton I'm expecting to go best available midfielder. If there is a notable slider then that would be the time Carlton may look to deviate from that plan.

How highly do you rate Jono Marsh as a midfielder or a KPF? Do you think he is worth a punt at say pick 18?

Also with picks 3, 18, 24, 25 at this stage, who do you think St Kilda will pick?

I'm hoping for Billings, Dumont/Crouch, and two of Dunstan/Hourigan/Acres/Jones/Marsh.

I don't rate Jono Marsh as a key forward. I see him more as a high half forward if he is to continue playing as a forward. He's not a tall key forward and not a particularly strong mark for his type.

If picking for St Kilda I'd consider him at 24/25. Probably not at 18 though with a few I'd say have a better opportunity of finding a role at the next level which I can't say with the same certainty about with Marsh. A Crouch/Acres/Dunstan would be more what I'd look at later in the first round for the Saints.

Knightmare.
Do you see your order changing much.. now the comp picks have pushed several back. And the trading of picks etc. I suppose you will wait another week before updating your draft?

Personally I see the Cats taking 3 picks , probably a couple of mids and a tall back . Have you rated your KPB players anywhere?I like McStay and Barrass.

I'll have an update for you some time tonight/tomorrow. I still have Acres at that Geelong selection.

Gardiner would be my top ranked key defender.

After that I'd look at probably Matt Sully as a rookie.

Beyond that I can't say I'm all that interested in the key defenders available this year and would recommend waiting till next year.

Just a question in regards to your power rankings:

Does the way it works mean that if you had the first five picks in the draft you would choose..

(excluding F/S and mini draft selections)
Pick 1: Tom Boyd
Pick 2: Matt Crouch
Pick 3: Dom Sheed
Pick 4: Marcus Bontempelli
Pick 5: Cameron McCarthy

My power rankings is basically the order of who I like most/who I think will go on to have the best career/be the order I'd take a particular guy in this draft.

The exception to the rule with the picks is if I'm certain the next guy on my list will be available at one of my later selections, that might be a time I would pass on them.

My power reankings are still floating and subject to change.

With Martin/Hogan/McDonald not available for teams to select early my order would be as follows:
1. Boyd
2. Crouch
3. Sheed
4. Acres
5. Bontempelli
6. Billings
7. Aish
8. Taylor
9. Lennon
10. McCarthy

*Or it will be my power rankings next update.

Thanks for the reponse KM

KPB no good. Really? Looking thru your rating I thought there was a couple you rated.
McStay @42
Giles@43
Spencer@50
Sully @68
Barrass , obvious don't rate him , personally I like him but my impressions were based on only a couple of games.

Do you have any idea who is looking at Sully , as Pure on our board mentioned he had be nominated for the Combine ie at least 3 clubs wanting to see what he can do. For that matter did you hear his results? Will he last till the Rookie draft?

Knightmare, with GWS now having selections 1 and 2 do you think there is any chance they will take Marcus Bontempelli with their second selection.

He seems to be a player that fits a needs profile in that he is a tall midfielder that uses the ball well. He needs to build up his body but with a few pre-seasons he could be a very exciting player.

It appears Collingwood are desperate to get him so do you think SOS will pull the trigger at 2??

The other players mentioned earlier do not seem as important for GWS. Kelly seems like a Whitfield/Scully type, Aish another outside mid, Billings perhaps as a smaller forward.

Bontempelli seems the perfect pick up after Boyd...or is pick 2 too high??

Your thoughts appreciated :)

Keep in mind after roughly pick 20, maybe 25 the draft does fizzle out some but those key defenders projected to go later don't excite me.

Giles and Vanderluer are maybe the better of the rest. But other than Gardiner and maybe Sully I wouldn't be picking the key defenders with any confidence this year.

I suggest Geelong are probably going to look at Sully. He's been playing in that VFL team all year so Geelong have no doubt a strong feel for where his game is at and needing a young long term key defender he's a logical fit as someone relatively more ready to go and relatively more proven.

GWS may well pick Bontempelli at 2. They need some tall midfielders and they've made some lets say interesting early selections in recent years so Bontempelli would probably fit into that "interesting" category as a relatively high risk selection who still has some developing to go.

This year is a year where everyone feels too early to pick at 2 so you're going to be taking a guy who either as a projected lowish ceiling (Aish/Kelly - ie. not franchise players but more solid pieces to your best 22 who can have long, strong careers) or someone who has upside (Bontempelli) but you can't guarantee what the eventual outcome will be.

GWS to an extent have the luxury to take the chance with all that young talent on the list and with few tall midfielders/flankers I'd personally favour Bontempelli over those others who have been linked to the selection (Aish/Kelly/Billings/Scharenberg) but not by much such is the evenness of this draft.

The hold up in the Adams deal is both GWS & Coll expect Bontempelli to bolt.

He will go at 2.

I agree about Thomas Shanahan being a bit of a sleeper. I think he compares pretty well to another East Perth product Jackson Ramsay, who went about the same time last year. Similar size and athleticism. Ramsay maybe more versatile and aggressive but Shanahan has more midfield potential.

Knightmare, where would you have Longer going in this draft?

Geelong might be the first to take a serious look at 16. But more likely one of St Kilda at 18 or Hawthorn at 19 would probably take Longer.

Not as many clubs looking for young ruckmen this year so more likely he would go in that 15-20 region would be my guess on what a club would pay for him.

Hey km

Quick question on stringer. You were strong on the idea that he was probably the number 1 talent in the draft last year, if not for his injury.

On what he showed in 2013 off the back of a very limited pre-season, do you feel he can become that player in time?

I don't think Stringer will be THE best from last years draft.

Jaeger O'Meara and Brad Crouch look the clear two from the minidraft. Brodie Grundy, Oliver Wines, Joe Daniher are others I'd also back in to have stronger careers of two who went in the national draft.

Stringer can be among those next few though (with Viney, Vlastuin, Whitfield, Macrae, Mayes among those) which would still prove an excellent return for pick 5.

He's one I'm increasingly heaing as a late riser.

He closed out the season playing some reserves footy and in round 24 with that big 37 disposal game.
He exceeded expectation in the testing which doesn't hurt his stocks either.

Not a lock to get drafted but from perhaps pick 30 onwards he's someone who has put his name up for selection as a genuine chance.
