Let's talk Ports! Part 3

Crowd attendance is down this year no doubt, I'd argue that our malaise pre dates COVID however.

I'm surprised the attendance isn't lower than it already is. I looked up a ticket to this Thursday night's game (Rich v Carl), and it's $65 for a GA seat high up in the stands. Where is the value in for what is a 2 hour game from a poor vantage point. That is before you factor in cost of travel to and from the game, parking and food/drinks.

The cost of an AFL game is wildly overpriced when you factor in what you can get va other entertainment mediums. $65 is a 2-3 month subscription to Kayo, which could be 100+ hours depending on your viewing habits.

I've been to only one Port game this year for partly this reason, but more so because Hinkleyball.

Crowds are down leaguewide.

Doesn't help that some poor schmuck who thinks to himself "might take the wife and kids to the footy this weekend" is probably staring down the barrel of $200+ in tickets and food and other associated expenses.

And that's probably to sit at the top of the grandstand to watch a Ken Hinkley coached side.

Who would bother?

$200 to watch a side have a goal kicked on it for lifting a foot standing on the mark.

yayyyyy

Tickets are priced like it's the hottest thing in town and demand vastly outstrips supply. It just isn't the case in any stadium for any team with the exception of maybe west coast, who are simply hot garbage at the moment. The product ****ing sucks.

Footy used to be the bastion of the average joe with two pennies to rub together. Now it's really not an easy sell to anyone from any walk of life. The entire game is in no-mans land at the moment. Corporates own it, the plebs don't like it and don't feel heard all while clubs themselves get more and more distant from their members. Particularly Port members who have very little say over who runs our club.

So many bad decisions over the last decade from the league.

Which rounds did the fans actually incentivise and push for? Are the costs to fund these rounds bundled into the ticket price? I don't dislike it, but Indigenous round once seemed like a low key affair, but is now a big deal.

I personally miss heritage round and seeing the old school kits much more.

How about match day experience, most people I know can't stand the bullshit woffle of a guy screeching into the mic to make noise along with cringey 80s music and flashing lights after a goal is kicked.

It's like they took the AFLX experiment and injected a small piece of that into the AFL.

They'll blame umpiring, fixturing or whatever, but the game is in a terrible state and a flipping circus.

They really need to look at the Western stand memberships, the Adelaide Oval membership isn’t working. The last 2 games for the crows there have only been 3000 people in that stand, if they can’t get those members to go to their games they won’t be showing up to ours.

They were advertising the 'oval Footy Memberships' for sale the other day, there used to be a wait list.

They are currently doing a 'mid season sale' for 300.

Yep, they were nowhere near selling out at the start of the year. It’s such a waste of space.

They are unreseserved at that price though.

Such a weird thing.

I couldn't think anything worse than paying hundreds of dollars a year and having to turn up when the gates open to get a good seat. It's always baffled me why people would want unreserved oval memberships.
Yeah, might suit the Beryl's and Herb's from Norwood, that follow Adelaide. Catch up with their friends for 3 hours beforehand to find out what the latest trip to the Doc. has told them and exchange recipes, but for Port, with it's younger demographic why would you?

Yes, Football Park was a shithole, whilst AO is one of the best grounds around, but a large part of it's appeal is also the reduced time you need to allocate prior to the game. Having to waste all that upside of AO's location to get there early for a decent seat is counter-productive.

My group are a mix of AOFM and PAFC western stand so it's the only way we can all sit together. You don't need to turn up when the gates open any more.

Last season's COVID enforced seat allocation was great. I'd get online as soon as the tickets were available with the entire groups barcodes. Get good seats and rock up just before the first bounce.

My name is not Herb. :(

Although if it was I'd use the USA pronunciation, 'Erb.

Seriously, a great post and worth far more than a :thumbsu:

2 expansion teams from 'non-footy' regions, the continued ignoring expansion into tassie, whilst 2 vfl teams reap the benefits from sponsors and playing there. No idea

1. Being a small footy state actually plays against Tasmania. It doesn’t add much business-wise, meanwhile the AFL can safely take it for granted.

2. The same logic works in favor of having more teams in Qld and NSW, but on reverse. Swans and Lions, Giants and Suns are long-term investments.

My reference is the NHL. It’s very similar. The NHL has put many clubs in Southern US. Those expansions did wonders for the game in places like Texas, Arizona, Tennessee, and the Carolinas.

On the other hand, Tasmania is like Quebec City, who dreams with the return of the Nordiques. It’s a small market that already loves hockey. Although it makes sense sport-wise having an 8th Canadian club, it does not business-wise. So, it doesn’t happen.

I love it and wouldn't have it any other way. I haven't been to a game all year but in previous non covid years, my group thatmight range from 2 to 10 always sit in vaguely the same spot. Whoever comes, they always know we'll be in that region. The only times we have an issue was showdowns. I couldn't imagine beoing wedged to a solitary seat for your entire footy experience. Especially if you were surronded by dickheads.

The latter point is exceedingly valid.

I’ve learned that a majority of 50-60yo men and women identify with and live vicariously through our esteemed coach, and don’t seem to think he and the mountain of shocking and soul-crushing defeats unfolding before them are directly correlated.

Brett Ebert on Rockliff and Fantasia’s podcast. Said during training one day the boys put his car up for sale on Port Road.

There's optimistic and then there's delusional.
